Midwestern University Chicago (CCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there a way to tell if your app has been reviewed yet? This is my top choice school, and I've been complete since 1/17 and no word. I'm working on an LOI, but I know it might be premature. Any insights?

You can try to call and ask. It couldn't hurt. I would guess that it probably has not been if it's only been a month though. It might have been, but it's not as likely. It takes some people several months to get an II, while some receive one within a week (with similar stats)

I was complete around the same time and already sent in both an update and a LOI. Keep in mind, there's not much time left here. Good luck!

I would send a letter of interest. Jan is a little late to be marked complete so a letter might show them that you really are interested in the school.

Wait listed 🙁

Im back! sorry ive been MIA but waitlisted is good! All the people i know in ccom were waitlisted at one point. But this sucks. i thought my interview went well too, but it seems like that doesnt really matter. When they called did they look up if you were waitlisted or did they just say if you didnt get the email then assume ur waitlisted?

They told me I was waitlisted (following an awkward "umm would you like to know now or wait until the letter comes?") 😉

Sent from my Nexus 7 using SDN Mobile

Well on a POSITIVE note at least we're forming a little support group here.... 😳

Quick question guys, my physician letter writer sent the letter last week and it should arrive at CCOM this week, however on the application page it does say "please allow 2 weeks for documents to process"

I'm wondering since the deadline is March 1st, if the letter comes before then but doesn't get processed into the system before March 1st, is it considered after the deadline?

It says that, but I think that's more for the busy season. I submitted in mid January and it processed in a few days. You could always call and find out though

Rejected post interview. Never feels good to get a rejection, but I wasn't going to attend. Good luck to everyone else!

I'm sorry this happened to you 🙁 But good luck to you wherever you're going! 👍

Has anyone been accepted off the alternate list yet? Do they continuously review the alternate list until July or do they not even look at it until May?

No one has been accepted off the alternate list yet. I spoke to the admissions director after the last committee meeting and that is what he informed me. I spoke with him also at the beginning of the cycle and he told me aside from one year where they pulled some people off in January, it usually starts in April or May.

Last year, during their last monthly committee meeting in April, I know some people were pulled off the waitlist (I know this because there was a girl in my interview group that was waitlisted and then accepted). Once they start looking at the waitlist, I think there is actually quite a bit of movement. I had a lot of friends accepted last year, and it's seems like they pull people off every 1-2 weeks up until orientation.

Spring can't come soon enough because this wait for CCOM is killing me :bang:

If anyone deserves CCOM, it's you, Dr. Meows. I'm betting you'll be among the first pulled from the waitlist.

I'm with silver. You'll get in meows! We both will! That is, if Rosalind doesn't snatch me up after Monday 😉

1. I like you because of your username 😉
2. I like you because you say nice things about me 🙂
3. I really really hope you're right! :xf:

You'll get into both, and then you'll decide on CCOM because you want to be classmates with the cat doctor! :naughty:

I officially declined my acceptance offer at CCOM today. Hopefully one of you will get my spot. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks. Any big no-nos someone or you pulled that I should know? lol I'm the kind of person where if something can be done wrong I will do it exactly that way 😀

No I don't think so. Just relax, and know why D.O, and why midwestern, and then be sure to be able to talk in depth about anything on your application. The interviewers have access to everything you sent AFTER the primary

don't pick your nose while interviewing. remember to smile. wear deodorant. be cordial and friendly and upbeat.

Hello everyone,

I am a longtime lurker, but never have posted. I have an interview this upcoming week at Midwestern university and was wondering what type of questions do people usually get asked? Is there a list or database of questions out there specific for MDW that I can refer to? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Yea there is a page on SDN with past interview questions for every school I think. I can't post the link, because I'm on my phone, but if you poke around, hopefully you can find it. I can say for me, it was a very basic CV based interview (meaning they ask you about your CV). They ask you why you like the school and the D.O philosophy in general. Just be friendly and polite and you should be fine

Ok, so I had a question about CCOM. I understand that the school has great clinical rotations as they often tout this factor about their school. However, how important are clinical rotations for a medical student perhaps as compared to the first two years?

What do you mean by it being important? How important is it for experience? Or how important is it for landing a residency?

From my pre-med understanding, clinical rotations (including the caliber of the rotation site and especially the grade you get) are way more important than the first two years. The pre-clinical years don't seem to be very important at all unless you want a super competitive specialty. Their main importance seems to be in preparing you for Step 1/COMLEX.

Has anyone heard when the adcom is meeting this month?? I can't take the waiting!! I'm on my portal 24/7.

Last year they met Tuesday March 20th/Wednesday March 21st (I remember because the day sealed my fate last year hahaha) so I'd bet on this week!

I interviewed last Tuesday and the counselor said she thinks they meet the last Thursday of the month

Just got an II today, today an I'm super excited. Does anyone know about how many seats are left? Or if it's waitlist only at this point?

Congrats!! To be honest it's most likely almost full, although I know they do keep spots open until the last group so I know there are a few spots left. No one knows exactly how many though.

And honestly, even if it is full now, they said they interview 600, and end up accepting a total of 400 for a class size of 200. So the odds are in your favor. There will be a TON of people from early in the cycle dropping their acceptances for either other D.O schools or MD schools. Also, the fact that you got an II so late in the cycle is a good sign, it means you're very competitive in their eyes.

True, but a good 50+ of those people are being pulled from the waitlist between May and July (source: admissions). Being in the last few weeks isn't most definitely for a waitlist spot, but it is MUCH more likely - not just for CCOM but for any school. That being said, people do get in this late right off the bat, but the percentage is obviously much smaller than if the person would have interviewed a couple months ago.

Hey, thanks guys. I know the chances are slimmer now, and I appreciate your honesty! I'm just super excited there's still a chance for me here, it's my top choice school😍

I wish you luck!! I've seen you on other boards and I'm rooting for you (we've interviewed at similar places). I have a feeling you'll like CCOM the best out of all of them 😉

According to the FB group, there are 100 students. Take into consideration people that don't use Facebook, I would say 130-150 spots are full.

70% of the class is said to be full by Christmas - that alone is 143 students in 2012. Granted people drop those acceptances, but add that to January and February acceptances. I'd say 30 spots max are probably left. The Facebook group is a really poor indicator - I have multiple friends accepted who don't even have a Facebook. Not to start an argument or anything 😉

FINE! I wasnt that far off. I said 150, you say 180. 🙄

Also from what I've seen ( since I made the group and added everyone) is there are quite a few upperclassmen who asked to join. So take that number with a grain of salt.

Hey guys, I was just curious about something. I turned in my secondary application at the beginning of November and have still not heard back about an interview or not. I have contacted somebody at the admissions office twice and they assure me all is well. I get the feeling something went wrong as a 4 month lag time is BY FAR the most I've ever seen. Any info or insight on what I should do would be great. Thanks!

Have you sent any updates or letters of interest? If not, I would suggest doing so. I think that's what helped me get an interview so quickly (complete Jan, interviewed last week)
