Hawaii on top

Then either UF-Jax or Lutheran whether you're interested in good training or location.

Florida for training, Lutheran for location.

I'm a Canadian IMG (SGU) so I don't have big names like most in this thread but what do you guys think of the following. I'm not dead-set on any fellowship and may want to be a hospitalist.

Why did I hate Jeff?

Petty reasons- on my interview day they didn't pay for parking, didn't escort me to a far away faculty interview (I ended up lost and stuck in a stairwell) and told me they don't provide monthly parking for residents because "we want to be fair to all the residents who don't drive." (complete bs. if you don't want to pay for parking just say it, i have no problem with that)

Legitimate reasons- unimpressive facilities, emphasis on private attending sub-specialty services, early morning pre-rounding by interns, resident noon report was very unimpressive (3rd year resident giving noon report appeared clueless). Seemed like interns worked their butts off while residents went to the library to "read".

Subjective reasons- I got the impression that the Jefferson IM program was simply a stepping stone to fellowship. I didn't think there was an emphasis on training general internists. Also got an edgy elitist vibe from the residents, similar to the vibe I got when interviewing at NYC med schools (call me crazy but I strongly dislike NYC and its life-is-more-important-in-new-york-city attitude... please don't throw rocks at me!)

To be fair, I had med school friends who LOVED their interview day at Jefferson. And the two residents I met from Jeff while on the fellowship interview trail seemed happy with their residency experience. It just wasn't the program for me.

Meanwhile Drexel's match list was pretty strong but the traditional scheduling, financial?, ancient feel, ancient EMR are kind of setbacks... And WHC community program first? ahhh. confused.

Hey guys. I've been stressing about my list and just want to get some input on my top 3. I'm interested in hem/onc, and from the northeast (would like to return for fellowship if I do decide to leave for residency). What do you think of this order?

I think I got the best gut feeling from Ohio State, but I'm just really unsure about moving to Ohio. I know they are very strong in hem/onc, however, and I am wondering if it's silly to not rank them #1 simply due to location. BU is not as well known for hem/onc, but the residents who do choose to apply seem to match very well. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I guess praying to match at your #1 is the best you can hope for. None of those other programs are "bad" (and I'd put Iowa #2) but none of them are anywhere near as strong as WashU.

Columbus is the best city on that list! Most livable, most affordable, tons of great neighborhoods and restaurants. I love Columbus, Ohio but unfortunately didn't feel the same way about the program on my interview day, or I would definitely be staying in Columbus. OSU is unbeatable for H/O too.

Hi there. I grew up in boston so I know BU/BMC pretty well. BMC/BU is an institution that has values that set them apart from other programs, I think. They take whoever comes in the door no matter what neighborhood they are from and even if they don't have insurance. There has been some financial *ISSUES* in the past, but I think it is not really a *PROBLEM* perse because it is a County/City hospital after all. No matter what, the hospital system will stay alive because the state will always back it up to keep it running. That's one of the reasons why a lot of programs respect residents from BU.

MNot sure how it compares with Pitt...the city is definitely better. The new PD x2 years is making some big changes to the program and making new tracks. He's a great guy with a bow tie and came from Case, I think. Cards at BUMC is phenomenal.

I'm kind of unsure where to rank these two programs on my list. I really enjoyed my UMass interview and interacted well with the residents. They all seemed very happy and had plenty of time to show their face for an extended period of time on interview day.

Monte, on the other hand, wasn't a great interview experience because I barely got to talk to any of the residents since most were busy on the floor, etc and not many showed up for noon conference.

In terms of amount of work you have to do, call schedules, pgy2/pgy3 work load, both programs seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. I think UMass would certainly offer me a way more relaxed and chill residency experience. I really don't want to spend my pgy2/pgy3 yr doing scut work on floors and taking q2/3 calls. Also, UMass has a "drip" system, which means every team admits everyday, and each intern caps at 2 admission per day. Per their residents, you are out of there usually by 3 pm.

What do you guys think? Any input will be appreciated. What makes this decision difficult is that I'm from the NY/NJ area and would like ot stick aorund

Any advice on UPMC vs. UTSW? I'm interested in cards and UTSW is a powerhouse in placing people into cards. I really liked the atmosphere and feel of UPMC during my interview day. UPMC has a great reputation but from their fellowship match for cards, it seems that most stay in house. Good thing, bad thing? Silly to put Pitt over UTSW if I want to do cardio? And there's all that talk about UTSW being malignant...definitely didn't get that vibe on the interview day but where there's smoke, there's fire?

Where are people getting the USC fellowship match list? When I interviewed there, I only got a conglomerate list for "fellowship training sites." It didn't mention the range of the years, nor did it disclose the number of residents accepted by each site. So that list is useless.

You can e-mail the program administration or the chief resident and ask for it. That's what I did. I also asked for a list of their current students. Seems like a good number are from Keck, which I think is a good sign that people are staying there.

sounds like you answered your own question...as far as what you're looking for anyway.
umass is much more chill. monte is hard core, makes no apologies for it and that's the allure of their training. if you're willing to put up with it to stay close to home...only you can answer that.

Neither are competitive programs and thus probably equivalent, so ask yourself this question:

If by malignant you mean you work hard during your training, then yes UTSW is malignant otherwise.... if you liked your upitt interview and felt good about the program, then by all means rank that higher since its where youll be for 3+ years. both are good programs so in the end its where you would rather be.

Hmmm I don't know what to think of USC's list. You're right, the 2012 Hem/Onc list is AMAZING. But cardio is pretty mediocre, as expected. Makes me wonder... is the 2012 Hem/Onc list just a fluke?

AMG looking for a benign, resident friendly, with excellent clinical training, program. Planning on doing a fellowship, but do not know what yet...so I want to keep it as open as I can. I guess currently it is ID, but that could change early on. Help my ranking please:

Based solely on perceived quality and reputation...

But if you're looking for a "benign" (cushy?) residency, then be careful with Emory. While you will get superb training, I hear they work their residents like dogs in a county hospital with little resources. MUSC is similar to a lesser degree.

Looks like a decent list, most are pretty similar in caliber. Maybe someone else can chime in to really help sort this rank list.

Still trying to figure out my number one. I liked all three programs but im thinking its mainly because they seemed to have similar types of residents. My major question is which will be best for training. Right now have I have UVA at the top and here are my thoughts on each

UVA: Friendly residents, funny and great to talk to. Very cool area, plenty of stuff to do outdoors. However, I am worried about the actual experience at UVA. I got the feeling that they learn tons and do lots of teaching, but may not have as much autonomy and get as many procedures as other places. The hospital seemed very crowded with other residents. It has a great fellowship match, but I still want to feel really confident about my procedure knowledge and ability to take care of patients.

Vandy: Obviously great program that opens lots of doors. Very impressive morning report and was impressed by all the residents on rounds. Residents may not have as much fun as the other places? It also seemed very fellowship driven and I am not sure if the fellows take over the teams.

UNC: I felt like this program offered the most autonomy and allowed their residents the most freedom on the wards. I didnt do a second look here, but a friend who did really enjoyed it and backed up my feelings. Am worried about not as much elective time and if the area would be as fun for a single person.

Any other thoughts would be great. I am looking to be a well trained general internist with the opportunity to do a fellowship.

Here's another perspective, though. I think when we give ranking list advise, we fail to consider the individual's "gut" feeling. So with that in mind and the fact that you are Cali bent, I would say

UCSD/USC
NYU cat/pc
Brown cat/pc

UCSD is more reputable than USC, so just rank accordingly. It could just be as simple as LA vs SD, or as complex as the past 2-3 yrs fellowship matches/electives/schedules/salaries.

Hi Everyone. The rest of my rank order list is largely complete, but there are two programs that are driving me crazy. If someone would be so kind to indulge me with some discussion...

Stanford vs. BID (Boston).

Both are relatively cush, academic programs with good names that buffer a light patient workload and fellow-driven culture. I'm probably going to do GI or Pulm/Critical Care with an interest in health policy and global health. No geographic pull, as Cali is warm, but Boston actually has stuff happening after 8pm. Thoughts? Thanks so much in advance!

Another problem I am having is deciding to rank on location vs. reputation. I have lived my whole life in Chicago and would very much like to stay here for residency, not because of a significant other, but mainly because I love the city and all my friends and family are here. Unfortunately the best interviews I got were outside of Chicago. Do I rank based on reputation or should I just put the Chicago programs first if I want to go into GI?
