New York COM (NYCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My application has been complete since 10/2/2012 BUT I'm staying patient. Have not received an interview invite from them 🙁 . I was born and raised on Long Island, so hopefully that'll be of help to me. I do have other schools to lean on, but NYCOM just seems super ideal for me since it's so close to home, PLUS there are excellent rotations for the students.

Very good reason to choose a school - Close to home... Why do LI residents always think they have priority over other NY residents? I think, proximity to home is one of the reasons (I too applies all around NY) but should not be stated as one of the primary reasons. NYCOM does take oos students, so i doubt they will rank in states based on where they live

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I grew up down the street from NYCOM and it is one of the primary reasons why I want to go there. I lived in other towns where the rotations are as well. I would want nothing more than to give back to the communities that I grew up in and around. I would also like to practice there too after med school.

Considering DO schools focus more on primary care, I would expect that they would prefer if their students remain around the area that the school is in after they graduate and help the surrounding communities as a primary care provider. Students who are already Long Island residents are more likely to do this, so it would make sense that they would show a slight preference. I don't think it has a ton of influence, but it probably does cross their minds. This is my opinion.

Agree with gmcguitar.

Location is one of the primary reasons to choose a school according to the most recent aacom survey. I find it reasonable for Long Island residents to want to live and practice in the area where their families live/where they grew up. If you had a chance not to uproot your spouse, leave friends, etc ... Many would take it. Also, I'm sure schools would rather choose local students because they have a higher chance to attend that school, and because they assume there is a greater chance they will serve the local community in the long run. Just my thoughts.

gmcguitar and littlegreen88, your reason for choosing the school is not convenience, it is location and ability to give back to the community, which I think is noble. Still, I believe it should not be the sole reason to chose a med school, especially NYCOM.
As for me, I know I will have to move into an entirely new neighborhood no metter which school I attend. So location is not a problem for me.

Have any late applicants heard back? I was complete 12/10 but have yet to hear anything

what do you mean complete? If you just submitted 2ry on 12/10 then it is too early.. in my opinion

How would submitting my secondary in December be too early? That's late. Most people are completed in September......

Ugh! Interviewed on Jan 8 and still have not heard back. I'm sitting on a 2 week deadline for a Touro NY acceptance and want to have the word from NYCOM to weigh my options!

Anyone else in a similar bind?!

I interviewed Jan 9, and I called admissions and they said it can take anywhere between 2-4 weeks, depending on when the adcom meets.

It's a tough one. Which are you leaning towards?

I would go with NYCOM if you're accepted there. The school's been around longer, has better connections w/ docs and hospitals, PLUS I'm sure it's cheaper!

I was in a similar situation. I interviewed with Touro & NYCOM back in November and heard back from Touro within two weeks and STILL HAVE NOT heard anything from NYCOM. I contacted them twice but they told me they still have not reached a decision and requested another copy of my college transcripts (don't know why).

I ended up submitting my deposit to Touro and think that even if I got into NYCOM I would have still picked Touro. I liked their lecture format better as well as the facilities and I think they have a strong match list. I'm also from Brooklyn so I plan on just taking the train to classes vs. driving or moving to Long Island.

Oh and tuition is the same.

Good luck with your decision! 🙂

Just got the acceptance today as well! I was from the January 9th interview and was also sitting upstairs with 2 other guys and 1 girl (congratulations by the way!). The interview was pretty straightforward but you could not really tell if the interviewer liked you or not. All I have to say is be honest and be yourself. Good luck to everyone who is still in the process!

Interviewed on 1/9 nothing yet either🙁...and I live in queens kinda getting worried lol. Oh and I was also upstairs
I was upstairs too talking with you all. I was the one who couldn't find the door and my way around... I am hoping for all the best luck for you to get accepted!

Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone else from jan 9th. (And for anyone else who really needs me to); yeah our interviewer was rather emotionless

I dunno about this. The estimated cost of living + tuition and all that good stuff was around 85k for nycom and it goes up every year. By 4th year they estimated that it would be around 95k. This is crazy expensive.

Touro was estimated around 65-70k per year. You can also find relatively cheap places in harlem/washington heights.

How would I decide between NYCOM and another DO school like PCOM?

Which you can you see yourself going to? NYCOM has NYC. PCOM Philly. Cost of attendance if you care about that. Type of curriculum and grading system. etc.

Wooohoooo got accepted yesterday!! Interviewed the 22nd of January 🙂

Interviewed: 1/8
Heart Attack: 1/9 - 2/6
Accepted: 1/7

Now deciding between here and TouroComNY became difficult...
