Is NYCOM's residency preference for NYS residents or applicants from northeast in general? I have heard both. Can someone with knowledge of situation elaborate/clarify? thx!

They don't have any stated preference but the in-state to out of state ratio is 70:30.

It's 70% NYS, 30% OOS as per their website.

Hi guys this is my top choice I wonder if I may have a chance in this school. I was born and raised in Dominican Republic. New York resident 3.7 science GPA, MCAT: 25 VR: 6 BS: 10 PS: 9. I have tons of extra curricular and I am currently shadowing a primary care DO physician that graduated from NYCOM. <3

Your verbal score is a red flag. They might grant you some leniency since you are a NY resident but it depends on the competitiveness of all the other NY state residents applying. I would retake if possible.

I called around on housing in the area. Uhh... it's >2k/month and you need to make 40x the monthly rent to qualify for a lease. Where do students live, exactly?

This is completely inaccurate, I pay 750 dollars a month. There are more than enough places to rent from, and the most people require is a background check.

Did you just call NYIT or did you specifically call the medical school? Because this sounds like they were referring to the NYIT main campus, Columbus Circle (Manhattan) and not the med school campus.

If you were to live in Manhattan, >2k/month and 40x would be applicable. Near the med campus, rent should be half that (if even) and salary caps won't apply. It's not the greatest area (vs. Columbus Circle in Manhattan) so rents should reflect that.

Yeah, rents near the med school averages around $700-800

I boxed NYIT in red, showing it's $26,000 cost of living compared to the osteopathic average of around $15,000...

I just used forrent.com and found places around 2k/month. It's nice to know that there are other options, I guess, but I'd rather live alone in an apt.

Not saying you didn't do your research, just telling you as a 1st year here that you can find a comfortable single apartment for 700 (if you look early) - 1200 (if you're really picky and look really late).

That being said it is a very expensive area, which is to be expected in long island and the tuition is definitely very high as it is a private school.

-And I don't know anyone living in a single apartment personally paying more than 1200 per month.

I think it's sad that having lived in SF and now Manhattan, I've learned to consider anything under 2000k a month cheap, but I guess to a normal person Long Island is expensive.

But, as per below, you should be able to get a single place for under 1500k a month. Looking at the schools I plan to apply to, NYIT is definitely the most expensive (though, since I have some preference to remain in NY, very high on my list).

That being said it is a very expensive area, which is to be expected in long island and the tuition is definitely very high as it is a private school.

yup rent around NYIT can range from 700-1500 if you want to live on your own, but once you factor in food, utility bills, gas, and extra spending money..you will be looking at around 20-25k in extra loans every year.

Once they confirm it, I don't think you can edit it. However, try to see for yourself if you can edit. If not, I don't see a big problem if it is already listed on your AACOMAS 🙂

I just listed the activity and the date attended. I think a part of this process for them is seeing if you will follow directions or try and go outside of that and "impress" them. Better to be safe than sorry and just do what the ask!

I'm going through this secondary and it worries me that I have to leave a lot of it blank. I have no global/overseas work experience, no publications or research, and no additional certifications. I also don't have much formal shadowing since I worked in healthcare during school and had a ton of contact with physicians to ask questions to. I do have a large list of extracurriculars, work, and volunteer experiences. Hopefully that makes up for the rest. Anyone else in a similar boat?
