Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got a call yesterday. This morning I woke up and found an automated message that was sent overnight saying my LOR was received.... Seems like they are working faster than their automated system.

Weird. I never got the automated email saying my LOR was received. The staff member I spoke to confirmed the receipt of all of my letters though. Shrugssssssss.

Aw man! I had hoped to pick up the confirmation call! Oh well, got a voicemail and that's great.

Now to get those LORs in...

A couple questions: Should I include shadowing experiences under the health care related volunteering section? Also, I just got a job as an EMT but I don't start until next week. Should I include it in the work experience section?

Make sure you read the question correctly and give them what they ask for. I believe for employment it only says while in undergrad/grad and not during the summer. For volunteering, only put it if you were volunteering. I don't think shadowing is volunteering.

Got the call saying my application is ready for review.

I am still missing a Physician LoR so hopefully I can snag an interview before that.

Number 1 Pick!

Got a call early today as well. The person who called really does not have a connection with NSU-COM , I ask him if I could edit my app he said yes and I find out that is not the case.

Oh boy, I listed shadowing under volunteering, and already submitted.

Just got the call!! Live in Miami so this is a top choice!

I feel like the one guy who didn't get invited to the party without a phone call.

I did also, it's ok at least they know we've shadowed now to lol

My app will be tougher as a non-trad it seems. All my clinical hours are through my employment and I've been out of undergrad for 10+ years.

I'll have to give it some time tomorrow and see what I can figure out.

Ok so I posted this in the main forum, but I think it'll be better here.

I haven't taken my MCAT yet so my MCAT scores won't be back until beginning of August, here are my questions:

1. Will they toss my secondary in the trash since when I submitted it wasn't "complete"?
or
2. Should I wait until my MCAT scores come back to send it in?
or
3. Should I send it in now and update them with my scores when they come in?

I can't speak to Nova but most schools will accept your application without a MCAT and they may just hold off on interview invites until an MCAT score is in. But if your asking for nova specifically I'd recommend you call.

Submitted the secondary today. Fingers crossed and toes and eyes and arms and legs...

As I'm viewing now my application summary, I see that they listed my transcripts under requirement, but there's no receive date next to them. Does that mean I need to send them my transcripts?

Also, it seems they picked 5 of the 6 LOR's I sent them. They left out the one from my non science professor. Was that done intentionally, or did they not receive it?

You talking about the email about the receipt for documents received? Mine only lists one "Letter of Reference" when I sent 5.

You send transcripts if/when you are accepted.

Anyone having difficulty opening their application summary that was emailed?

The only email I got was the confirmation that I paid the $50 fee. However, I received a phone call yesterday and they left a voice mail that my application is now complete and ready for review.

I can view my application summary by clicking on "Fall 2014" under "processed applications" on their application website.

Did everybody get the application summary email? should I be worried that I didn't?

It took 2 days after the call to get the summary email. So I wouldn't worry.

My summary didn't even mention letters of rec...

Sometimes the interviewers use it as a way to quickly review an application rather than having the entire primary application in front of them.

So according to NSU-COM my application is ready for review. They don't require letters just yet, but I'm nervous because I saw the FAQ page. It says their average MCAT is a 28, and if you have less than that you need to show extra things like having more LORs (for example). Its weird because it says their class of 2016 avg. MCAT is a 27. Well which is it??

My MCAT is a 27, but since my pre-health advisor is slow at uploading letters, i don't know if the admissions committee will make their interview decision before they see my letters.
Kinda nervous, and I've emailed my advisor so many times to upload to VE. Ughh 🙁

Should I call NSU and ask them to wait for my letters?

I know LECOM also makes interview decisions without LORs either. Although both schools eventually will require it.

sci GPA: 3.73
overall GPA: 3.95

Your GPA more than makes up for the 27. Even then, as you said, c/o 2016 had an average of 27 and their cum/sciGPA was much lower than yours.

I think you'll be alright 😀

I looked at their FAQ, it says that a 28 MCAT is recommended to be competitive- 27 is the average. IMO, you'll be fine with your GPA, so try not to stress too much 🙂

To answer your question, I would NOT ask NSU to wait for your letters. Just try to get them in ASAP and maybe they'll review everything together. Assuming the rest of your application is decent, I don't think that the lack of LOR's will hurt, especially since they are optional at this point anyway.

Did you indicate you're retaking? If so, they will put your file to the side and review it when your scores come.

I did when I first did application there was no where in secondary.

Why is everyone so excited about this school?
What are your top reasons for wanting to attend here?

What kind of research opportunities are available at this school?

Standard message received after sending letters. You can always call to verify if that will calm your nerves.

i did but was holding forever. is that the same message you guys received?

Hey All,

Applying to Nova as well!

I already submitted my secondary a few days ago and am just waiting on LOR's. However, I just got a phone call from a Nova representative who said that based on my stats they were going to go ahead and send my application on to the "next phase in the application cycle" but that I would need to send in my LOR's and transcripts. I knew I would need to have my LOR's sent but I didn't realize we needed to send transcripts directly to the school...? Has anyone else gotten a similar call or found any information saying we need to send our transcripts directly to Nova? I submitted my transcripts to AACOMAS and they were received in May.
