Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am just a bit paranoid. I may call them tomorrow to see exactly what they are looking for.

I completely understand. Definitely want to only have to do this one time so might as well put everything you got into it.

The secondary says that your app will not even be considered if you do not meet the requirements. I still have a bio lab to complete next semester. Will they not consider my app until that lab is complete? Seems kind of silly with so much time left to complete a class or two if need be.

u dont have 8 credits of bio yet?

For the "how did you learn about osteopathic medicine" question, I basically answered with one short sentence.

For the volunteer questions, I listed what I did and how long I did it. Period. I didn't explain a thing. Honestly, I didn't think they were looking for long answers.

For employment, I provided bullet points of the jobs I held since high school. I included the dates, my title, one sentence describing what I did, and how many hours per week it was.

Your guys' paranoia is scaring me :scared:

Well think of it this way, if they give us the room to stand out from other apps, let's just take it because TONS of people may put one sentence answers like "Learned Osteopathic from a friend" etc etc. I doubt they would punish us for using up the 2000 char space since they didn't specify to describe in a couple sentences or anything like that.

Some people just did a good, precise paragraph about it to be in the middle.

But don't worry. I'll call tomorrow and let this and the other thread know what they say and no I won't troll you guys.

Well, I wouldn't be asking this question if I did. No, I dropped Bio II lab at the time due to a family emergency making me unavailable for the time slot that it was available in. I am an anthropology major.

I did the same thing. I don't think they're going to want to wade through that much. If they did, they would have called it an essay, and made the box bigger, and set it apart from the short-answer/MC questions.

I agree. I think in going to call today to make sure. I'll let everyone know what they say.

I been having trouble submitting my app.
It keeps stating that it can not process my payment at this time.

I had that problem yesterday using credit cards. The E-Check worked fine. Some others stated that they got the credit cards to work last evening though. So perhaps their server is overwhelmed with requests.

Worked for me using a CC last night via Firefox

from reading last year's thread, it seems that the first interview invites were received on August 3rd. Given that secondaries this year came in a week earlier than they did the year before, I would expect the first batch of invites to be sent out during the last week of July.

I see where you are coming from, but try to think about it in more of a logistical manner. If you were the adcom, which would you prefer? A five paragraph essay which is probably full of cliche information anyway, or a short paragraph/few sentences that lets you know that the applicant at least has done their research?

I think that as long as you get your point across, you don't necessarily need a full page response. It's not like the question is asking "Why DO", it's asking "How did you hear about us?"

As a quick info. I got a call from Nova that my Secondary is complete and they have my LOR's. They said that it is now getting forwarded to an admissions committee member.

So lesson is that yes they expect you to send you LOR without being prompted.

Secondary DONE!
Sending Letters Now

Edit: God I love Interfolio. Letters sent!

I sent 3 letters, 2 Science, and 1 Non-Science. I'm working on my DO letter now.

Think I should contact the school and let them know I have a DO letter on its way at a later time?

Wow awesome! Did you get any email confirmations besides the one for the payment? What does your application status say on the Webstar site?

UPDATE ON "OSTEOPATHIC QUESTION" FORMAT:

I called NSU today and asked them if they intended for this question to be an essay format or just a couple sentences. I was put on hold for a while after asking this.

So what I was told was that it can be answered in an essay format or in a few sentences. It is entirely up to us and whatever we think will be a fulfilling answer to the question.

My take on this: as the above poster said, maybe not too much fluff, but some added detail may be better than just a one sentence thing and may make a slight impact. Just an opinion here.

I submitted my primary roughly a week after the application opened. Should I be getting a secondary around now or in the next month?

Dang it, I answered with one sentence and I already submitted.

Me too. I wonder if they would send it back to us to edit?? 🙂 I'm worried they will think I didn't put in any effort, but I read the questions like they wanted brief answers. Ohwell

Thank goodness that the credit card system wasn't functioning properly otherwise my answer would haven't even have been a complete sentence, lol. While I didn't write an essay, I wrote 3 or 4 sentences to give a more elaborate answer to the prompt.

No emails. When I go to the webstar site and drill into the application summary, I see that all of my requirements are listed as "received".

Just got the call as well! I wonder how soon they start reviewing?!

I also just got a call to verify my app. A little unexpected but I'll take a little attention haha.

I got a call as well. Did they request that you send them transcripts? I thought that was a bit wierd??

Every school will require transcripts once they accept you and you choose to attend. No need to send them in right now. At least that's what I've gotten from the conversation and on the previous threads on schools. Maybe some med students can clarify?

Honestly I wouldn't even worry about it. If they were to reject someone b/c of something so small like that then it prob meant the applicant wasn't gonna get accepted in the first place.

Agreed!!!!

I submitted and payed for my application but under my application summary it says that they still require my AACOMAS service application. what does that mean?

I'm in same boat. I think they just haven't gotten to us yet to mark everything received.

Things can always change from year to year but last year they requested transcripts as soon as possible but you weren't required to send them unless you were accepted. But, like I said, things can change from year to year.

Is there a huge difference between submitting the secondary now or in August/September as far as chances of being accepted? September considered late?

Hey guys,

When they ask "Is English your native language? "

If I moved here very young and did elementary and everything here, does that make English my native language?

TIA

Im gonna submit mine sat. am i being late? seem like all of you did it wed

^ regardless, schools wont look at secondaries till end of 1st week of July at the earliest

Do you guys know if Nova requires a physician LOR SEPARATE from a pre-med composite LOR? The reason I ask is that I do have a physician letter but my school includes that in the composite LOR they do for each applicant. I don't want my app to be considered incomplete because they didn't see that I had a physician letter inside the composite letter packet compiled by my pre-med advisor.

OMG, just tried, there is NO limit on the answers

Super paranoia on!

A staff member from the admissions office gave me a call yesterday afternoon to let me know that my application is complete and ready for review. It was a very friendly courtesy call instead of the usual email. Nice touch, Nova!

hi guys,

just wondering what my chances would be at this school. cGPA 3.1 (health issues during first 2 years of college), sGPA 3.6 (with some retakes), 23 MCAT (first take) 27 MCAT (retake): 8,9,10 (PS,VB,BS). i have volunteered at a hospital, shadowed a DO, tutored chemistry and biology at my undergrad institution for over 3 years, student mentor for incoming science majors w/ the Student Development Department, volunteered in soup kitchens feeding the homeless to name a few ECs.

Your stats are about average but your ECs are good. I think you have a shot at Nova definitely. Just make sure your application is stellar, and work on your interview skills. Good luck!

did anyone get a email saying they received recs? i didnt do the secondary yet tho

Nope. I received a phone call.

I got a call yesterday. This morning I woke up and found an automated message that was sent overnight saying my LOR was received.... Seems like they are working faster than their automated system.

Just got a phone call that my app has been received and that it's being forwarded to the admissions counselor. The thing is my committee letter hasn't been submitted yet, so I'm guessing they'll just put my app on hold?
