Hello fellow SDNers! I'm debating between NYU and UMass for medical school and I would greatly appreciate your input. I'm very much leaning towards a surgical specialty. It seems that NYU fares best in matching students into competitive surgery residency programs. However, I am mindful that UMass is a high caliber program that would cost significantly less overall. Yet, would I still have the same shot at getting into a great surgery residency (e.g. Columbia Presbyterian or Mass General) coming from UMass, which is wildly successful in internal med/pediatric placements?

Location (city vs. suburbia), method of transport (subway vs. car), and housing (dorm vs. apartment) do not particularly matter to me. I would be happy with anything. I just want to attend the school that will best poise me to achieve my long-term goals. Again, I would be grateful for any insights in weighing these two schools! 🙂

Note: If you vote in the poll, please briefly *comment* on your decision below! Thanks!

if price is absolutely no issue then i would go to NYU, if cost is even somewhat of an issue i would go to UMass imo

I loved NYU even though they rejected me post-interview. I think going there is totally worth it.

Do you have an estimate of what the total price difference would be? I interviewed at NYU and I would probably pick it, provided the price difference isn't completely insane.

If you can qualify for in-state tuition, and NYU hasn't offered you good financial aid, then I would go to UMass simply because the cost is significantly lower. However, keep in mind that UMass is aimed more at primary care (the majority of the class ends up in a primary field). NYU on the other hand is much stronger in research, which can make it easier for you if you are pursuing a surgical specialty/subspecialty which you stated was your preference.

To be to the point: if cost doesn't differ significantly, NYU will be better in matching your career goals

I wasn't lucky enough to get into either of these fine institutions but I would go where you feel like you have the biggest support system and where you feel most at home. Imagine where you want to be in 10 years and go from there.............

Did you decide on where to go? At 8K tuition (+10K fees), Umass would save you hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not to mention more than 10% of the class matches to Harvard. Did you choose Umass or NYU?
