Hey guys, so I'm working on my rank list, and I'm having a very difficult time deciding between these two programs. As far as clinical training, research, location, people I interacted with, they're pretty even. I want to match in GI and both seem to do a good job with that. Any suggestions/opinions on these programs?

Anyway, I liked both places too and am thinking about fellowship as well
-I think clinical training is pretty equal at the two, probably a more diverse population at Uminn. I've heard you also get great GI exposure (bleeds, liver failure) at Uminn on general medicine teams. Both have great VAs it seems (imo better that it's attached in Madison). You get more time at the private hospital at Uminn. One difference is that I feel like things are more front-loaded at Uminn with the 1 intern-1 resident system (i.e. you carry more patients as an intern)
-UW might have better research opportunities and probably has a more nationally recognized reputation, for what that's worth in applying to fellowship. I got the feeling that at both places your best opportunity to match for fellowship (especially competitive ones) was internally, and they like to take their own.
-The locations are similar, but Minneapolis is noticeably colder and more of a "big city" whereas Madison is a college town
-I thought the people at both places were great too

Overall, I think both are good places and can get you into fellowship so the decision is probably based more on location than anything. UW maybe can take you more places with a slightly better reputation, but honestly I don't really know what I'm talking about when I say that as a fellow applicant

What are your thoughts?

I know it's getting close but I'm having a hard time ranking because I didn't do aways and I don't feel like I know enough about what the day to day looks like at any of these programs. Interested in academic GIM, enjoy inpatient more than outpatient

UCSF (applied to all 3 tracks)
1. want to know whether residents hang out outside of work or not since I'm single, new to the city, and want to go to a place where people are friends outside of work too
2. What's it like with no block schedule for ambulatory and the hospitals being far away? Will it move to 4+1 during my time?
3. do you feel lost in the categorical track bc the class is so large? Is there enough mentorship? Is everyone a rock star, and if you're not will you get left behind? I did well in med school because I'm good with patients and I work hard but I never felt like one of the smart kids
4. how bad is the scut/paper charting at SFGH and are there plans to upgrade the emr?
5. If anyone applied all 3 tracks as well, would love to hear your thoughts on the different tracks

NYC is by far my most preferred place to live (lots of friends, have lived here before) but is it worth dealing with the unions and ancillary staff? And exactly what type of scut work will I be doing? Can you give an example of a typical wards day? I'm not opposed to working hard but I want to know what I'm signing up for.

I am an IMG, the reason why programs are not great as rest of the forum. But would love to hear someone's opinion on it.

I agree with jturkel that UVA should be higher, maybe even number one, especially since you are interested in GI. I don't think UC irvine will get you GI unless you plan to do a chief year.

You should've asked these questions on interview day. I am sure the typical day on wards is like any other program. Pre round. Round. Consults/discharges/Orders. Notes. Conference. Notes.
Scut work, at worst, will be patient transport, stat lab draws, blood culture draws... and then serious attitude.

So, I'm trying to decide whether to put UNC vs. UTSW at #4 on my list. I've got Vanderbilt, UVA, and Wash U at #'s 1, 2, and 3. I'm thinking possibly general medicine vs. Pulm/CC vs GI as future plans maybe in academics. I would love to go with my gut on this one but I really loved both programs on interview day. Does either one really set me up particularly well in Pulm/CC or GI vs the other? Is this basically a coin toss decision? I know UNC is supposed to be great for General Medicine. I really like the +1 schedule of UTSW as well. Any thoughts? Thanks for all of the advice.

Hi - I could really use some input on a few things..

I have been most interested in USC & UC Irvine, but am having a few concerns that I was hoping someone could comment on. I know that USC pays a much lower PGY1 salary than most programs, which I worry about especially considering the cost of living in LA and given how demanding the residency seems in LA county hospital. I enjoyed my interview day at USC very much, and residents were friendly, knowledgable, and seemed genuinely happy to have been exposed to a wide array of pathology. Any comments on this, and the program in general?

I also was impressed by my interview day at UC Irvine. To me, it seems like a solid program that has really developed through the years. Residents also have a salary on par with most programs, and insurance is fully paid by the institution which is not always the case. I'm confused why everyone on the forums always seems to put UCI down. I do wish that this was not in such a conservative area - if anyone from LA area can comment on this, I would also appreciate that.

Finally, impressions on USC vs UCI vs Georgetown vs Jefferson vs Loyola? I may want to persue cards or GI, but am not entirely sure at this point.

USC #1 is fine imo, but I'd personally take UCI and LLU out of the top 5.

Could someone help me with number 3 on my list? I'm debating between Cornell and Penn, want to do heme/onc eventually. I'm in NY now and the thought of staying in NY for residency is really nice. On the other hand, I really liked Penn when I interviewed (probably a bit more than Cornell).

Salary is low at USC is just the hard fact. Its also a huge program. Not sure what else can be said about the salary.

Regarding UCI, you definitely can live in between the two areas. Remember UCI also rotates at Long Beach VA I believe, so you can live there too. I don't think where you can live should influence where you rank UCI, but more their dismal fellowship match and general perception regarding their program strength as mentioned above.

Yes, USC pays low. But somehow, all of their residents manage?
You budget accordingly. You live within your means.

How conservative is Orange? Like... politically and culturally? This is southern california, not the southern united states. This will minimally affect you.
Living between Orange and LA? Traffic sucks. You'll like want to live somewhere near the hospitals (ie Long Beach VA and UCI Medical Center)

would ranking Lenox Hill above NSLIJ or NJMS be an awful decision? considering hospitalist in the future, and significant other will be working in Manhattan.

An awful idea? No. A bad idea? Maybe. At least as far as NSLIJ goes.

Thank you - can you comment on the salary at USC? If it was not so low compared to other programs I would not hesitate ranking it highly. Also, I how conservative is Orange? Would it be managable to live between Orange and LA as a resident at UCI?

as someone who lived there its not conservative were not talking deep south or something. Its similar to many nice places in socal other then maybe a little pretentious as irvine is a pretty rich area although orange less so. not feasible to make that drive everyday too much traffic or youd have to wake up and leave at like 5am to miss traffic coming into irvine from la...

Having a hard time ranking. Interested in pursuing GI fellowship. prefer to stay on west coast if i can help it.
I have it in this order:

1. USC
2. UC Irvine
3. U of Colorado Denver
4. Loma Linda U
5. UVA

UT San Antonio
Texas AM
U Wisconsin

U nebraska
U New Mexico

Any tips/ advice? esp for the top 5?

taking into account your desire to stay in cali and I understand that sentiment

2) UWis = UVA =Denver

If it were my list I'd rank Uwis as #1. I have been told countless times to choose the place where I fit in best as it is your performance that dictates your success ... especially if the programs are relatively close to each other in standings. from what you have written it seems like USC is a clear #1. They had a good number of people match into GI this yr. UCI/LLU though will probably make it much harder for you to match (didnt interview there, but hearsy)

I do remember UVA PD mentioning either 8 or 10 matching this yr.

Sorry about that. To break it down - UPMC Shadyside vs University of Kentucky. Again, I'm potentially interested in GI, regarding nephro, I know it doesn't make much of a difference as it's a buyer's market at this point. Thanks for your advice in advance!
