*~*~* Official Class of 2023 Thread *~*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How many schools are y’all applying to?

As of now I have 25 on my list that I want to apply to. If I get FAP assistance I'll apply to all 25. If I don't I will have to knock off 10 of them that I like least or are very unlikely to accept me.

Edit: most likely I'm not gonna be able to resist applying to all of them regardless of getting FAP or not though lol

Holy crap. That’s so many schools lol. It’ll pay off when you get in though.

Also @Lucca @Matthew9Thirtyfive pretty sure we all posted several years ago when we were still undergrad students haha. Can't believe its finally app season. We Got This! CLASS OF 2023!!

Question for y'all: What are your backup plans if you don't get in this cycle?

I will probably apply to pipeline/backdoor programs that will allow me to enroll after 1 year post-bacc

**** yeah!

I’m in a linked program through the military. We are given priority at USUHS, but there is still a chance of not getting accepted (eg, if we don’t hit certain metrics on gpa and MCAT). I honestly don’t know what happens if you don’t get accepted. I assume I would be sent back to the fleet to finish out my commitment (4 years).

Good idea.

Must be nice knowing ur basically already accepted. Pretty sure you'd have to "flunk" the MCAT to not make it in.

Yeah. It is possible to not get in even if you hit the magic numbers, but that’s only happened once, and I think he had zero clinical experience or shadowing. People have declined the acceptance to go to civilian schools through hpsp though, as that’s an option.

Dang son, might I be able to ask what the magic numbers are? >🙂

Is it really a lot? My initial plan had been all my state schools plus an additional 5 to 6 out of state and then I saw SDN and everyone recommends at least 15 to 20 lol

He's basically already in med school haha. Yeah 20 seems to be the minimum. I see 30+ frequently. Im shooting for 25 if my bank doesn't break

Yeah, I’m skewed by the program I’m in. They recommend 4 schools including a USUHS, just in case something happens and we either decide to go to a civilian school or fail the commissioning physical or something.

Planning on taking the MCAT in August. Hope all goes well so that I can be applying with you guys this coming cycle! Best of luck to everyone and looking forward to going through this cycle with you guys!

How many schools are y’all applying to?

Everything within the country of Texas (TMDSAS = 10 schools, then there's BCM, that new TCU school, UIW...), a handful of OOS schools (Maybe a couple of reaches if I qualify for FAP), and a couple of DO schools just in case.

Find a job with upward mobility (Probably chemistry-related) and hope to try again once I get feedback on my apps.

Took the MCAT in January, now just trying to get through this semester but I can only think about my PS and application! May can't come quick enough!!

I'm pumped for the cycle to open up! We're getting closer every day to becoming doctors! Best of luck to everyone this cycle!!!

Pushed my MCAT to June 2. Now comes the battle of finishing the semester strong, studying for the MCAT, and working on my app here and there. Do you guys think it’s a big deal if I wait to submit my primary til like mid-June? I want to be able to spend solid time on it after my MCAT without that distraction, rather than risking it being mediocre just to get it on by May 31..

Adcoms in real life have told me that you can take your MCAT all the way into August and still not be considered late. Apply to one throw away on May 31 to get verified and then apply to your actual school list as soon as your MCAT is in.

Good plan. Also, when I request my transcript should I choose the “don’t send til this term’s grades are posted?” If I choose that, grades won’t be posted for this semester until May 15, and my registrar’s office apparently takes a month to send it in to AMCAS. To limit delays should I send in my transcript as it is currently, and just update with a new one during the summer?

I’m not positive, but I don’t think you can update your transcripts once your amcas is verified. Are any of the courses prereqs or upper division science courses? You’d probably want to wait for those.

Joining...retaking the MCAT in June (maybe July/August if practice scores aren’t up), applying to 20-ish schools.

Working my way through a masters in biology, UG major was Biology with a minor in Chem, because my school just started offering a Chem major this year.

Welcome to the club. I’m taking my MCAT June 30.

Anyone else rethinking their school list now that the time is getting closer? I had 25 on my initial list but I'm thinking of cutting out close to 10 of them. 5 of them weren't too hard to cross off but I'm finding it tough to choose between the leftover ones.

Honestly, I've made so many changes to my school list and spent so much time obsessing about it the last few months that I refuse to touch it again! My neuroticism was getting out of hand.

I cut two schools off my list because they require CASPer.

I’ve had a school list for a while now, but I know there’s not much rethinking I can do until I get my MCAT score in July. That’ll be the deciding factor, lol.

How do you know which require Casper? That sounds like too much added stress on top of everything else.

There aren’t that many schools that require it. It’s just a stupid test that I don’t think is a good indicator of anything. I get what they are going for, but I doubt it’s very effective. Plus it’s just one more thing to do.

Unfortunately I just checked and one of my top choices have it listed

Hey all, going to be joining you this cycle (hopefully). I’ve mostly been a lurker on this forum for the past five years. Can’t believe the time to apply has finally arrived!

(Lol, this thread began in 2017)

On the bright side it is relatively cheap and easy... But yeah I wish I didn't have to jump through another hoop just to apply to a couple schools.
Same. My top choice just began requiring it this cycle. Makes me wish I hadn’t taken an extra year to apply but, if it helps them identify successful future doctors, I’ll be a part of the system, I guess.

Not sure it really does more than make sure you aren’t a sociopath, which I guess is good but seems like a low bar to set, and the same thing can be done with a few interview questions.

How far is everyone in their PS/activities section writing? I think I still have a few more edits in my PS but have worked on it a lot, work/activities section still isn't done.

My PS has been done for about 2 months now. My activities section is almost done. I am going to tweak a few things still, and I need to confirm some of the contact info, but other than that, it's pretty much done.

Actually, one of my tweaks is to follow Catalystik's advice and combine my music and writing into one artistic endeavor, which gives me another slot to fill. So now I need to see if I have anything else worth putting in, or if I should just leave it at 14.

Hey class of 2023! This pass cycle was hell and very stressful. It had its up's and downs for a lot of us on here but hey we all made it out alive (at least most of us😉)! Just wanted to show you all some love! Keep you heads up and stay confident. Im rooting for you all!!!:clap:

I don't think it's settled in that after three years of being on SDN, I'm finally going to apply to medical school. Hey y'all! Looking forward to talking about med school with everyone.

Almost done with my PS and have finished most of my work/activities section!

Still busy in my Master's so I haven't had time. Way behind schedule. :sour:

Ugh not far at all. I need to cut my PS by 1000 characters still, and haven’t even started my activities section. Trying to put MCAT studying first, but when the semester ends in 2 weeks I’ll have way more time (I hope!)

Finished my personal statement thanks to a lot of SDN members who helped me a lot! And have all my activities but haven't written any of the descriptions for them yet. Going to do that throughout May.
