OFFICIAL DUKE COUNTDOWN THREAD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Funny, I thought the check did have my name on it. It says my name on the top and says my status right below welcoming me to the class. I guess what you are trying to say, the check does have my name on it, but it was never supposed to have your name on it. Technically, I could still go cash that check at that bank. 🙂

By the way, I am just playing around but just trying to make a point

Dr. Corday and brandonite

I interviewed at the beginning of the last week, and they told us also that there would be 2 decision dates, the 8th and 15th. I'm sure they're sticking to that, since someone posted that they told him/her that they are mailing stuff today. Our wait is almost at an end.

I'm not a lawyer, but you might be able to sue for suffering. You'd have to prove that you suffered emotional or physical harm caused by a deliberate error on their part, though, so that might be tricky.

I don't think a notice of acceptance on a website constitutes a legal contract between you and Duke University to attend their medical school, so I don't see how you could use it to get a spot in their class.

b/c I interviewed on the last day and there were some posts previously that implied that for late interviewees the decisions may be made even after March 15.•••••I interviewed on the last day too (March 1st), and everything I've heard so far has indicated that we'd have our decision made by March 15th. I've always heard that there would be two decision days, the 8th and the 15th. I think our waiting is nearing an end...•••••I really hope so..........
By the way, let me know what you hear from Stanford when you send your next weekly email to Patricia 😀

Hi Everyone,

Today I called the admissions office and they said that they could not tell students their status unless their letters had been mailed out last Friday. I believe this is why they look up your file and sometimes won't tell you the results.

Anyhow, good luck.

EC

Comeon guys, you aren't going to sue Duke.

Anybody who sues a medical school for wrongful admissions or whatever else you come up with over an honest mistake on their part is NOT fit to be a doctor. I do not agree with what they did, nor do I agree with withholding our acceptance status right now. It is crazy, however, to beleive that you are going to be a good physician when you are unwilling to forgive the mistake of one of the admissions staff. I am sure that if this is pursued further by some of you that one or more of the underlings over at Duke admissions has the possibility of losing their jobs. While we may not like what happened to us, I urge you guys to feel some compassion for the people whose lives may be damaged by your angry actions.

You rock EC!

you just gave me a reason to hang onto hope! 😛

(Even if it is kinda silly at this point)

For real! that is the best piece of info of the day!

That is great news EC. I am now inclined to believe that in fact the acceptances were posted too early. They did not want people to know until they actually had the letters in their hand. I thought they were not tellinhg me because it was the big R but now I am inclined to think otherwise. Those people who live in NC I guess will find out first. Anyone that lives in NC actually check their status that day?

We should start a new thread once the results come in, comparing original message with the letter.

Good luck to all.

Has anyone actually received a satisfactory explanation about WHY they divide up the decisions into these two groups? I know it's not the "if you interviewed before date x then your letter went out with the first group" criterion, because I interviewed way back in December and I was told over the phone that my decision is in the SECOND mailing. Seeing as no one seems to have received notice of rejection yet, I'm assuming only acceptances went out with the first batch. But even then, only a couple of students posting here have been accepted so far, which seems a little low considering they were expecting to send out 100+ acceptances in the first mailing. I guess it makes sense to send out the rejections/waitlists later, but supposedly they also send out acceptances in this second batch. Why then might someone not get accepted first round, but then get accepted in the second mailing? Anyone get a good answer to these questions over the phone?

Well, think of things like this:

According to interviewfeedback, ppl who interviewed before February 25th (ie - all but the last week, and regionals) were reviewed the first week. That must be well over 90% of total interviewees.

Now, according to omores, a bit less than 70% of total acceptances were sent out the first week.

So, there's a big gap there. My guess is (and it's only a guess):

They went over all the files the first week, and accepted outstanding candidates.

Second week, they went over those us of us who intervieweed late, accepted outstanding candidates, and then went back and covered all applicants until they had issued 200 acceptances.

As to the question of why more ppl didn't hear in the first week, well, I think that's just a case of simple odds. They interviewed between 700 (low estimate) and 1000 (high estimate). That means that if they issued 138 acceptances, then between one in seven or one in five interviewers would have gotten an acceptance. I think about four or five people had gotten the good news - that means that there should be about 30 people still waiting!

Now, as to the fake acceptances the other night... I believe that those were completely false. Nothing should be read into those. An outrageous number of people got the good news. Not that there's anything the matter with that, but SDN'ers aren't that exceptional! I think "acceptees" outnumbered 'rejectees' by about four or five to one! As nice as that would be, things (unfortunately!) don't work that way. Add to that the fact that they seem to be strongly stating that there was a mistake, and I think that those 'acceptances' don't mean anything. I mean, if you just released the results prematurely, what reason would you have to tell people such bad news, giving them a horrible impression of your school?

I think we're all in for a bit more of a wait. Mail takes the better part of two weeks to get to Canada (despite the fact that I live about a half hour from the border), so I'm waiting for the 22nd to check the website...

I agree - we will all definitely have to wait for the mail to come to see what the answer is going to be, rather than trusting the website. They have serious egg on their face, and the only reason they would take back those acceptances was if some of them were wrong (sorry, I hope for you guys that got them that they were not). Ah, to be a fly on the wall when they figured out what happened with the website....

hey guys. Called the guy that interviewed me and he said the acceptances went out today along with the ugly rejections and hopeful waitlists. I do not know where I am, but let us all hope that we find something positive in the mailbox in the coming days.

Hey, how many people here besides me had the trivia guy who wanted to know about free radical reactions and the geography of Southeast Asia?

Anybody?

i did i did!

i definitely did.

I had the interviewer who had lots of candy! He was the nicest, coolest guy ever! Of course, that made it difficult to figure out if the interview went well, because he's so nice that he seemed to like everybody!

Perhaps someone close to Duke will receive a letter today?

We can only hope.
That way we can see if there is any corelation to the website acceptances/real ones.

Glad to see I'm not the only one... That guy was messed up!

I came out of that thinking I had no chance at getting in. But I know sar520 had him, and she got in MSTP, so maybe there's still hope!

rejected post interview today. my status page didn't change on the 13th. good luck to all the rest of you.

🙁

Well theres one for the corelation..... any others?

(My status didn't change either 🙁 )

You already received your mailing all the way in Maryland?

I was wishing mine was coming cause I am leaving for spring break tonight. But if a bunch of people start posting that the website was correct on the 13th, then I know I am out for sure.

Guys, I am in Baltimore and only 4 hrs away from Duke, so I could see people in Southern MD, maybe College Park getting it today....

not THAT surprising.

Dated 3/15 -- I live in Durham, so the mail from Duke doesn't ahve to go far.

hey valleygal, how did your interview go? just trying to see how much the interview counts...

thanks and good luck to all

Both of them went awesome, and the interviewers seemed very positive throughout the whole interview. i left both feeling great. oh well.

Just curious--I interviewed last Sunday, March 10, with a regional rep. I know that when I talked to the admissions office, a woman there told me that a lot of people were interviewing regionally and very late. It seems hard to believe that they would have reached a decision on us late regional interviewees so soon! (Unless we were horrendous, which I hope we weren't.) (Or unless we were brilliant, which I hope we were!)

Anyone else in the same boat as I?

Valley Girl,

Sorry to hear about Duke. Was it your top choice? What were your stats (if you don't mind saying)? Good luck with other schools 🙂

bobcat - i sent you a pm

Yeah, at least the wait is almost over.....

vkrn -

We've been told now about half a dozen times that there would be two decision dates and only two decision dates. They probably told your regional interviewer to get his stuff in to Duke ASAP, and you're almost certainly in the same batch as the rest of us.

And, five days to go for me...

Got waitlisted yesterday. Does anyone know how many people are on Duke's waitlist, and how many actually get accepted off the waitlist? Thanks.

Thanks, brandonite, for clearing that up. I had read the previous posts on this thread, but I sure as heck was getting confused.

Also, brandonite, I (and I'm sure many others) read about your Duke escapades when you posted on your interview day. That was really interesting!

Good luck to everyone... as our mass countdown continues... (tick tock tick tock)

Just got back from Spring break and I got waitlisted at Duke, rejected from Penn, Cornell and Northwestern. Ouch. Oh well I was kind of expecting it.

I live in Durham, and the Duke letter was postmarked March 15

Does Duke's waitlist letter come in a small envelope, or one of those big 8 1/2 by 11" ones?

It comes in a regular business-sized envelope, so you can't tell if it's a rejection or waitlist letter. The waitlist letter has a postcard enclosed, so you may be able to feel that through the envelope.

vkrn - I'm anxiously awaiting my rejection letter. 🙂 I suppose it's possible that you could be in another batch of decisions, but I've only heard about the two decision days.

And, sorry for being confused, but you get mail delivery on Sundays in the US? We don't even get mail on Saturdays up here... 😕

No, we don't get mail delivery on Sundays in the US.

Wait, so none of the "fake accepted" people have received anything yet? Please post when you do...

to the people who have received their decision letters- did the mail go to your permanent or school address? i know it said permanent on the website, but just making sure so i won't have to bug my little brothers back home by calling constantly.

thanks...I WANT DUKE!!!!
DUKE! DUKE! DUKE!

I hope today's the day! But now it sounds like I have to check my school mail too! Peachgirl, it didn't come to whatever you listed as your "permanent address" on your AMCAS application? Why can't they make up their mind?!
