Just got the real acceptance in the mail, after the fake acceptance last week. Booyah!

Now I have some tough decisions to make....

Has anybody that DID NOT get a fake rejection last week heard anything yet?

I've gotten nothing, but that's not too surprising.
 
I was not able to check the site so I have no idea if it said I was accepted. I did get a lovely WAITLIST letter today. I am kinda happy about it since I thought I would be rejected.
I am really waiting on Upitt since I fell in love with it last week!!!

Not bad I guess. I am going to eat some ice cream!!! 🙂

So I know this has been brought up before, but as an unsettled owner of an "invitation to join the alternate list" letter, has ANYONE heard about how many people are on the list, how many typically get in, etc- maybe from people already in other Duke Med classes that got in off the list? I tried to pry some info from the admissions office today but all they would disclose is that the list IS ranked . . .

yes, congrats to everyone who got in! Congrats to those who got waitlisted too...it's quite a feat at a top school like Duke!

Brandonite, I'm going nuts here waiting too! I hope my letter arrives tomorrow! 🙂

I wonder, when will the status page be updated? They said BY March 22nd...I figure that means it'll be updated no earlier than Friday, but who knows. The suspense is killing me!
 
This is what I have heard about the Duke waitlist --
They don't tend to take too many people off of it. Think about just the math -- they initially accept around 200 people for a 100 person class. For the #3 school in the country, a 50% retention rate seems a bit low, meaning that they probably get around 100 of those people. Rumor has it that last year they almost overfilled their class initially.
 
Thanks ValleyGal. I think you are right, especially with how evasive the admissions lady was when I asked about how many they take off of it each year. I can't imagine a lot of people turning Duke down!! Congrats everyone who made it- that is something to be proud of!
 
I heard they took around 5 or 6 off the alternate list last year. I don't know how many are on the list, but the odds are certainly not too great. 🙁

I'm so amazed. It only took 3 days for my skinny little rejection letter to make it all the way out to California. Oh well. I'll just blame it on my interviewer (the free radical guy).
 
You're in CA and you already received your letter?! Wow! I'm still waiting for my mailing...I'm in southern New England.

Does anyone remember a couple of months ago somebody posted a link to a Stanford Admissions Committee report with statistics from about 10 schools? I can't seem to find it now, but it will give you reason for some hope.

Anyway, the retention rate even at Duke was around 40 to 50 percent. Harvard was by far the highest at around 65 percent. It also lists the number accepted in May, June and July, but I don't remember the details. If anyone finds that link, please post it. I'm expecting an alternate letter from Duke tomorrow.
 
anyone get a call today? I wonder if they've resumed calling like they said they might...

wow...according to this report Duke really DOES only take about 10 people off the waitlist each year! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Yuck!

That is amazing that got out...it should be against the law..the formula factors in age and sex....in addition to admiting it uses a formula
 
Sorry for not being able to keep everybody's story straight, but--did anybody who got the fake acceptance get an official rejection or waitlist yet? Thanks...
 
Well, here it goes, I GOT IN!!!!!!

Got the big envelope today. I was quite sure I would get rejected since my interviewer was not positive at all and I had interviewed on the very last day.

Good luck to everyone out there, I am now very convinced that this all very random (I have gotten waitlisted at Vandy and emory and rejected from UCLA).

I did not interview on campus. They were so full I had to get a regional interview and drive 4 hours to Kentucky!! I was actually hesitant to go to the interview b/c I didn't think I had a chance.

Good luck to you on both Duke and Stanford. I'll cross my fingers that your mail in just somewhere at the border right now 🙂

As I mentioned a few posts before, I was lucky enough not to check my status page that morning, so I don't know if I got the "fake acceptance" or not.
 
Oh, OK. See, I was too lazy to go back and actually look... 🙂

Anyway, thanks for your help! Oh, and I had my weekly Stanford update, and nothing was new there. Are you withdrawing there, or are you still going to see what happens??

On a more serious note, back to that Stanford data...They only list summer offers starting in June. But don't some people get off the wait list in May? So maybe Duke did let in more than 10 that year. I really hope we don't have to wait until June or July.
 
doh, i got waitlisted. plus i got 2 rejection letters today. on the plus side, i drew blood from 25 patients without missing a single one.
 
Okay, so it sounds like we're 3/3 now. Coalboy, prometheus, and I all were "fake accepted" last week, and are now "real accepted." I got my acceptance from them at my school address up here in New England today. I think that means that those who got that acceptance screen last week were actually accepted. I don't think that necessarily means that those who did not get it were not accepted. Probably just not decided upon yet?

Anyway, good luck to those of you still waiting. And especially you, brandonite. 🙂

Hey all, I emailed the Duke office inquiring about the number on their alternate list. All they would tell me was that it was "More than 100." Not too encouraging . . .
 
Make that 4/4...I got my official word today that my fake acceptance is real. Whew! Now good luck to everyone still waiting!
 
Well my fake rejection became a real one, so I am positive that the "fake acceptances" were in fact just early acceptances.

I think that it is just coincedance that for some people in this thread, the early stuff turned out to be for real.
But still, who knows....

But thank you for putting up w/me Brandonite - I'm glad that my history of poor judgement is finally gaining me some credence.

And just to boost the validity of my presence a tad bit more, I've been following this post closely and routing for you guys. I know the waiting game (not for Duke, but nonetheless) is laying fertile ground for H Pylori in me, so I empathize w/what you're going through. Hopefully, there's a 9x12 envelope making its way across the border as we post.

Congrats to all of those who have finally received official notification of their acceptances to Duke. For those of you who got the "alternate" letter, I feel your pain. I was in your position last year, and I eventually got "the call" in June. Duke was my #1 choice, so I jumped at the chance. I think there are actually 6 people in our first year class that were pulled off the list last summer. They never told me my ranking, but they eventually told me that I was in the top half of the list (never found out how long that list was). As for things I did, I sent an updated transcript/activities list, and I let them know that if accepted, I would definitely attend. I don't know if it helped, but it didn't hurt. I know the waiting is horrible, but next year when you're knee-deep in Microbiology, it will seem like ancient history.
 
anyone in the U.S. still waiting for Duke's mailing? I still haven't heard anything up here in lil' ol' Rhode Island. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />
