So I just got into Stony off the high priority wait list, and I'm also on the waitlist at Hofstra. I'm not totally sure which school is my preference. I liked Hofstra a little better based on the interview day but I'm not sure how accurate of a gauge that is. Also not sure what type of curriculum would work better for me, although the small group sessions do sound like they'd keep my interest better than lectures. Stony is cheaper, but only by like $10k a year I think.

Anyway, if you guys have any insights, please let me know!

Congratulations @Falconclaw that is great!

So you are accepted at Stony Brook and not Hofstra? What is your question about Hofstra? There have been about a dozen threads comparing Hofstra to other schools recently if you'd like to hear more opinions about it. It's a popular topic, applicants seem to be having a hard time evaluating Hofstra against schools that aren't new.

Per your avatar, I Googled a relevant Milton Friedman quote. I think it would be this:
Milton Friedman said:
“One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results.”
Maybe he was talking about Hofstra's small group sessions?

First of all congratulations!

I interviewed at Hofstra, was waitlisted and then withdrew. I was rejected pre-interview at Stony Brook.

Overall, I really enjoyed the interview day at Hofstra and really felt that they have a ton of upside as a new medical school. I believe their first match list was rather impressive compared to the first classes of other new schools (however there was a thread talking about how this could have resulted from the generous scholarships that were offered that year). They have a great hospital network in LIJ and I really vibed well with the culture of the students there. At the same time, being a new medical school is also generally perceived as a negative.

Since I did not interview at Stony Brook, I can't say much about them. According to many threads it appears that the general consensus is that Stony Brook is currently at a better place due to how established the medical school is but that Hofstra is climbing fast. Also, a complaint that seemed to surface in the school specific thread was that the new curriculum at Stony Brook has had a bumpy start. I'll leave the rest of the information to current students since I am completely unfamiliar with the situation.

Personally speaking, I would go with my gut and go where I can see myself being the happiest. It also depends on how much $10k/year means to you in terms of that. I would lean slightly towards Hofstra as it seems you already like them better. Hofstra seems to also like to award scholarship money so the cost might even out. In that case - and based on your situation, I would choose Hofstra.

However, since you are still on the waitlist, this is all hypothetical. You can't go wrong with either school. Hope this helps.

Hahaha, I appreciate that! And yeah, after I posted the thread I realized that someone a couple of months ago had made a thread asking the exact same question :/ Anyway, I do appreciate the advice you guys have given me!
