Question for all the current students about text books.

How imperative is it to have your text books in the first few weeks of class? We're not exactly floating in money and I was hoping to wait until fin-aid reimbursement checks went out to order everything. (Don't really like the idea of putting them on a credit card but I could.)

I would go ahead and buy the anatomy dissection guide because i think lab will start the first week. The other books you could hold off on, or really could skip buying all together.

Are we allowed to use nitrile gloves instead of the latex they sell through the book store? I like the thought of not smelling like formaldehyde all the time😀

You can go barehanded for dissection for all they care 🙂 Yea, I don't think there's any reason you wouldn't be able to wear whatever kind of gloves you want. It also is a good idea to share a box of gloves with someone if you're trying to save money, because you won't use the whole box (unless you're changing gloves several times a day, which most won't).

You happen to wear a size small highlsnds? I'd be more than happy to split a box with you. I ordered a box of latex before the conversation on gloves started, but wouldn't mind trying out nitrile. Not smelling formaldehyde for dinner sounds wonderful.

Sadly, no. I'm a medium. I sent for a couple of samples (Protege that someone liked, and another--white colored-- from the same company). If I get smalls in the sample kits I'll give them to you. 2-4 weeks for delivery, so they may be here before labs start.

Awesome! Thanks.

I wear a size small in gloves if anyone wants to share. I just ordered mine from the vet bookstore. But if anyone thought to buy some extra small gloves, could you let me know where you got them. I'm having trouble finding some. Did everyone else get Dr. Brace's packet in the mail yet? I take it we need to get parking permits now. The parking lot looks so small on the map :lame:

Forgot to ask, has anyone who is getting federal loans had their direct unsubsidized loan dispersed yet? I would hate to have to pay the gazillion million dollars that is my tuition out of pocket if that loan doesn't get dispersed in time. poo on you loans for making me worry about you when i still have insurance and other less interesting and less important things to stress over

I hope I'm not being a pest by chiming in on these things...I just figure these are some things that current students can help answer.

As for the parking permits, you should get one before classes start. Every year there are people (including me) who think surely they won't be as harsh about giving out tickets on the first few days of classes. They will and they do. So, it's best to just go ahead and get one. I suggest going before the week before school starts if you can because you shouldn't have to wait in line for one. They are pretty expensive too (about $165), so I just let you know that so you aren't surprised when you go to get one.

The parking lot that most students use across the street is pretty small like you said, but there's always enough spots open at 7:30/8ish when you will usually be getting there. I very rarely have to drive around waiting for a spot to open up, and if I do it's always from 10am-ish to 2ish.

With the loan stuff, don't worry. Dispersment doesn't happen until school starts or at least until the last minute before, and you won't have to pay for it out of pocket. This is a common concern since the loans are dispersed so late, but they will not expect you to pay anything to stay enrolled. You do need to confirm your attendance though in case you haven't already (in Circle Park Online)

Did everyone else get Dr. Brace's packet in the mail yet?

Are you talking about the first packet that went out in June? or have they sent a second packet out? I've only gotten the one with the booklist and and requesting info about orientation, namebadge name, etc.

Also, just be sure to always have your permit visible. This past year they really stepped it up on writing tickets--even during breaks, such as Spring Break! However, I do believe you can park in staff lots after 5 pm and not get ticketed.

I got the second packet in the mail yesterday. About the rabies confirmation--I assume we can just email him that info, like my current shot record?

No, there is a second packet going out. You should get it soon. There is nothing in the packet that you need to turn in. It just has some parking information as well as a letter from Dr. Brace talking about orientation and stiff like tuition (makes me wanna cry :cry🙂, a letter about the white coat ceremony, a letter from the C/O 2013 class presidents, "big sib" and our class contact info, dress code stuff, and a H.A.B.I.T. (seems so cool) information sheet. Some more information should be going out next week by email about orientation so be on the look out for that.

Yeah, I think email would work. I just faxed Dr. Brace my current shot records that showed I had gotten my rabies shots and emailed to ask if he had received them. He did and that was that.

Just wanna throw this out there, if anyone is thinking about doing the Army Health Professions Scholarship Program thing, I can give you some advice and help you out a little bit if you want. I'm nearly done with my application and I suggest that if you are interested in it that you start working on it now because that sucker is a B**** to do and it's not something you are going to want to work on once school starts. If you want any info or help, PM me!

My tuition balance shows that my loan has been applied and that they owe me $$. I had to do my loan counselling and master promissary note (again! I just did one for them in May😕). If you follow the instructions Kat0303 gave to get to the FinAid page that's where you'll accept your loan amt and find out if they need that stuff (again) from you. It took about 3 days after that was complete for the loan to be applied to mt tuition. As far as us getting the excess $$ I think I remember someone mentioning that we get it in Sept.

:bang::bang::bang::bang:

Well I know I am not going to be getting any excess $ so I'm not concerned about that. I guess I gotta redo that Master Promissory note...again. If this doesn't work, I think I may seriously throw my computer against the wall, like so: +pissed+

Thanks for the help Highsnds

SO what is everyone's take on the professional dressing? from the pseudo vague guidelines the latest letter had, we can not wear:

pajamas
athletic shorts
scrimage jerseys and the like
revealing clothing

so if i were to deem professional attire as shorts and a polo, that'd be fine, right? Because I'm definitely not about to wear a shirt and tie everyday, that's just too uncomfortable. Thoughts?

I'm still not entirely sorted out on the dress code.....

Per the guide lines, it sounds like khakis/slacks (of which a dressier short type variety would probably work for guys) and polos/dress shirts/blouses are the within the limits. And it sounds like t-shirts and jeans are out? But that is where I'm confused because the book store sells sweatshirt/hoodies, and I know some of my friends already in school wear them to class. I have yet to figure out how you pull off dress clothes and a hoodie.....at least the husband insists that it just isn't done. (I tried.) So are jeans/really nice non-holey t-shirts acceptable? Does the dress code just not stick very long? I'm so horrible with fashion sense that I really don't want to be the first person pointed out for not wearing something appropriate.

The dress code is pretty loose. For the most part, you can wear jeans and hoodies/sweatshirts. Not in the clinics, though. And for about the first week, most people dress up.

My biggest problem is going to be shoes. I've spent the last 5 years wearing Croc flip flops 99.99% of the time. Wearing real shoes is going to be torture!!

sorry double post!

You can wear whatever. Like dyachei said, most of your class will try to follow the "dress code" for about a week before everyone starts to figure out that there really isn't a dress code. There is no problem with you wearing whatever you feel like wearing. Some people in our class like to dress business casual every day, but the majority don't and jeans and a t-shirt is pretty much the norm for most people. You can wear sweatpants or gym shorts if you feel like it. Many people come to class in work out clothes after working out during lunch. I wear sweat pants and a hoodie regularly to class in the fall.

I guess the only thing I wouldn't wear to class is scrubs. I'm sure no one would say anything to you if you did (we had one person in our class wear them a lot to class) but for some reason it's one of the things I've heard they really don't like you to wear. That may just be an urban myth, but I know I wouldn't wear scrubs just in case.

Is there a gym on campus we can use, or one close by that most people use?

Yay! I'm a jeans and nice shirt kinda girl, but after the summer I'm so cold that even a thick cardigan doesn't cut it. Nice to know I can still where a hoodie.

Yes, it is about 10 minutes walk from the vet school and is open to all university students. Pretty nice gym, too.
AWESOME!!!! Is it part of the athletics department?

It's part of the athletics department (I think). In either case, there are several areas that students can use. The TRECs, the bubble, and the climbing wall. The TRECs has classes, machines, and courts. The bubble has machines and an indoor soccer field.

One thing I've learned after my first day here: garmem and magellan GPS devices do not know the area, at all. You'd be much better off google mapping it, and then trying to find it yourself from there. And its not just the road names, they make up exit numbers (take exit 2a...theres only one exit 2, which is apparently wrong). You might get lucky some (I at least made it to my apartment), but other times you'll be (literally) going in circles.

There's actually a construction sign in Sevierville (pronounced "severe-ville" so my fellow SDNers are in the know!) that flashes "YOUR GPS IS WRONG!!!" then tells them which way to go to get to the interstate. I 🤣 the first time I saw it!

They must have added that recently. In fact I think I need to take a trip just to see it. 😀

Question for the upperclassmen: Is there any reason to bring a laptop to school? And if so, would one of those teeny netbooks work?

I just set up my laptop with monitor/keyboard/mouse to function as a desktop and don't fancy unhooking it everyday to take it with me. I also don't learn well by taking notes on computer and prefer pen and paper. If I have to bring a laptop (i.e. for in class use of some kind of teaching software program) I'm thinking of investing in a netbook, but I don't want to buy one if it won't work for the required purpose.

It's as you're going back to the highway from Pigeon Forge. Just past the Outback Steakhouse.

The GPS thing is mostly because they've done a ton of construction on many of the roads around here recently (including on I-40).

You don't need to bring your laptop unless you want it. Some people prefer taking notes on their computers and very few professors don't have printed notes. I would actually advise against using a laptop/netbook in anatomy since they tend to draw things very quickly that they want you to copy. I do find it useful later when most professors have lecture notes that differ from their powerpoints since many test off of their powerpoints. So I would just take notes underneath their slides on PPT. You'll also have labs in the computer classroom where you'll be using the school's computers, so there isn't a need for it.

You don't have to have a laptop. If you prefer to take handwritten notes, I can't think of any reason why you would need a laptop in class (but it does come in handy when you just can't keep your eyes open in class...). I like to bring my laptop beecause I type faster than I write, and I don't like to print out all the powerpoints they use in class (some people like to have the actually paper in their hand to write on). But it really is up to you and your learning style. There are as many people who don't bring laptops that do.

Actually, I just bought a netbook yesterday. I've had a big clunky laptop for the first 2 years of school, and I'm hoping the netbook will be more class friendly. So, if you are looking to get a computer for class, I would suggest the netbook. It can be hard to fit a big laptop, notes, coffee, whatever on the little desks. Also, I like the idea of having all my notes (in the form of the slides they use in class) right on the little computer that I can fit in my purse and pull out wherever I am. They also are pretty cheap and are better now than the first ones that came out.

Anyone planning on wearing sandals or flip flops as their "comfortable picnic shoes"?

I'm probably going to wear tennis shoes to start but stick a pair of flip flops in my bag.

Hey guys! Only a few more days left until classes start! :scared: What are you all wearing on Friday??

Is it sad that I automatically read your post as "What are Y'ALL wearing?" I've lived in the south too long!

I'm wearing a tank top and some pant/capri convertible things with tennis shoes. I'm also packing a jacket and flipflops just in case. I'm uber warm outside but fridgid inside so I come prepared!

And OMG, it's my last day of work before orientation!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to meet everyone tomorrow.

Oh, and will someone remind me what time we're supposed to get there tomorrow? In a fit of needing something to do I cleaned out my inbox and the stack of papers on my desk.

We have to be there at 8AM friday, in the Veterinary Academic Foyer (in the Vet Medicine Building).

I'm probably just going to wear cargo shorts and a polo, something easy like that. Tennis shoes def (I've never been a fan of sandals)

What is everyone's take on business casual for the class photo? I figure that at the white coat ceremony, shirt and tie is a must, but what are people wearing/what do you think they are expecting for the photo? The same?

For the white coat ceremony and the pictures both I'm pulling khakis or very dark nice jeans and a nice blouse or shirt. Dress slacks are probably fine, but a little too stuffy for me unless they're required.

You can definitely get away with wearing a nice shirt (like a polo shirt or something) for the pictures, just remember, these pictures will be on your ID for 4 years. Make it a good picture.
