Touro - Nevada (TUNCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Aaaaaand, still no secondary. Seriously? I might just go ahead and withdraw, too. I've spent so much money already. But dangit, I heart the area, class size, and noncompetition with other schools! Why you no show me love, Touro!?

its still so early no?

Do you guys know, if we send in our recommendation letters before we get the Secondary app?
or do we wait until they send us the secondary app, before we send the rec. letters?

Thanks. 😕

you can send it in before. I did this and had no problems at all.

Flight booked. This is the cheapest I have had to pay for air fare. feels good. 🙂

Just cancelled my interview here too for Monday, October 22 at 7:45AM. Good luck guys, hope someone gets my spot!

If anyone has already interviewed at Touro, do you mind sharing a bit of your experience?? Like what kinds of questions they asked etc.. I have my interivew on Monday 10.22, any advice would help!! Thanks! 🙂

Does anyone know if they require the full 6 hours of behavioral sciences before they offer secondaries/interview etc? I plan on taking other 3hrs during winter break as this school is at the top of my list!

I don't believe so, I had it so I cannot say for sure.

I don't think behavioral or english will stop you from getting an interview.

Recommendation's needed for hotels to stay in Henderson on 11/12?

I know, the school's kindly recommended hotels around the school, like Wingate, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn. But, I'd like to hear some actual stay experiences.

Anyone?

Do I need to wait for them to send sec app request email?
Or can I just send it in, before they request one from me?

Also where is the link? Can someone post it?

Thanks!

So I was released around 9/20 and haven't gotten a secondary from here or Touro-CA. Should I e-mail them to inquire about what's going on? Hopefully I didn't get auto-screened, i have a 3.44cgpa, 29Q mcat.

what's the turnaround approx for this school? How long after your complete are people getting ii?

I have an interview on 10/22 at this school and wanted to know if all these people are cancelling their interview because they are getting acceptances elsewhere or what?

6/7 verified, 7/25 complete, 9/21 ii

Did you get an email notifying you that you were complete? I received a "Your supplemental application has been received email" in early August but nothing since then.

No, it was the same email that I got telling that it'd take 4-5 weeks for processing.

Who else is going to be interviewing here on Oct 22nd with me?

Just went through this entire thread and sad to see that nobody who has already interviewed here posted about their interview experience. Once I get done with mine, I will make sure to leave a long post to break this trend. 🙄

I noticed the same thing as well!! I was wondering if anyone knows how long they take to get back with decisions after interviews??

I was in the very first interview bunch and they said the adcom would meet this week or the previous week. We should expect to hear something by mail by the beginning of November.

So I just finished my interview and am waiting in the airport. Here is what I got from the experience:

The morning started off with a long intro from Oscar and he was quite helpful and informative. He answered a handful of questions and explained what he thought would bring us success in our interviews. After Oscar finished up there was a short bathroom break and then the dean came in to explain the curriculum. He was also quite informative and first gave a brief overview of the 4 years then he went in chronological order in depth about each one. He obviously couldn't explain every detail but he provided what I feel was sufficient. Then it was time for interviews/tour. There were four separate study rooms each hosting two faculty members whose names and email addresses are provided on a sheet you get to take with you (a neat feature). The interview itself was in my opinion too short. It would have been nice to have a little more time at the end to ask questions or whatnot. 20 minutes evaporates pretty quickly. Anyways, the interviewers were very welcoming and were in no way intimidating or interrogative throughout the interview. Expect a few of the standard interview questions and some that are tailored specifically for you. As with all interviews the best advice is to be yourself and this is truly the best advice, it makes the interview go by much smoother. Depending on your group you will interview then tour or tour then interview. The tour was....well pretty much what you would expect from a school that's in a warehouse. However, the facility is technologically sufficient and had ample study areas. The library is expectedly small (mostly digital) and the bookstore is also quite compact. After the tour Christina presents on financial aid and this is pretty cut and dry. After that we spoke with Oscar one last time on when to expect decisions and what we should and shouldn't do while we wait and after the decision has been reached. Finally, they feed you pizza that complies with Kosher mandates, ie there is no mixture of meat and dairy products. Yuppers this means that cheese pizza, veggie pizza, and mushroom pizza were the three flavored we were offered, no pep for the traditionalists 🙁

Finally, while we ate a 3 student panel came in and for me this proved to be the gem of the day. They answered questions were they weren't going off on tangents but overall their perspective I believe is invaluable.

In summary, the fellow interviewees were all friendly and nice, the interview was pleasant but short, the tour was as expected, and the student panel was impressive and fun.

If I missed anything please let me know but hopefully this helps all future interviewees and applicants. Good luck those who interviewed and to those to come.

Would you mind elaborating on why you think the facilities are "technologically sufficient?" I'm just curious about any details you remember. Did you see the anatomy lab? Did anyone happen to ask how many students are assigned to each cadaver and if they're prosected or dissected? How large/comfy were the lecture halls?

Thanks in advance and congrats on the interview!

The anatomy lab is large. 40 cadavers and 4 students per cadaver. They are dissected by DO students. DO students have the opportunity to dissect the bodies that are used by the other programs (a separate batch). Every table is given an iPad for digital instructions. The lecture halls were maxed out at 160 students and there were two of them. The OMM lab was pretty nice. I say technologically sufficient because they had many computer stations for student use, everything was wireless.

interview was pretty relaxed 2 on 1 for 20 minutes, just to let you guys know. Also they said we wouldnt hear back until around december 2nd which is a little disappointing. All the faculty and students were cool and friendly. But just an fyi, I would bring snacks or eat before because i was pretty hungry by like 330 or 4pm and they don't have food till the end (515 pm). Good interview day overall though

Wow, those are awesome anatomy stats. Thank you for replying and elaborating. Good luck. I'm sure you knocked them out of the park, ;-)

I should also note that every lecture is recorded and posted online for student use 30 minutes after lecture. Not only are the lectures available almost immediately after lecture but you have access to first year videos in your later years, say for example your 4th year. This was really cool I think. Also, in the anatomy lab there were 6 projectors and 1 High Def. camera that could zoom really far into the part of interest on the cadaver so the instructor could kind of highlight it and it would be displayed on all 6 projectors. Basically, it just seemed that everything was up to date. I do wish they taught with the ultrasound like at Western U, but this is a small complaint and they seem to be concerned about there students success and could change if enough people asked.

On a side note they did mention that they purchase question banks for all of their students to help prepare for the COMLEX as well as a number of other things they mentioned that I can't remember right now but when I do I will post them.

Cool beans. What's this about teaching with US? I haven't heard about that yet...

What do you mean by this?
See your original post below. In my post, US = ultrasound. How are they teaching anatomy with ultrasound? I've not heard of that.

At Western U Northwest they had an actual ultrasound device and were instructed on how to use it during the anatomy lab. I am not 100% certain of the logistics of how they do it so I would rather not guess but I thought that was a really cool tool.

I'd love to learn what's so cool about having such a device in the anatomy lab.

I personally just think it is cool because when I shadowed in the ER it was something that the doctor I shadowed used a lot and it was quicker than an x-ray or ct scan and provided a lot of information right on the spot. We found a lot of stones using the Ultrasound. Some of the physicians were awkward while using it and when they did it seemed like it was more of a burden. Somebody said that the Ultrasound is the Stethoscope of the future and I kind of buy it. Just like with early patient exposure I think it helps build confidence through experience and could prove beneficial later. But that is just my personal take.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and it was quite nice and super close to the University. Hope this helps.

This happened to me... I had to call to get the secondary sent to me.

Really? Good to know. What number did you call? Aside from one other school that I wholly expect to reject me, Touro-NV is my last and only school I've yet to complete...

Invite today, 3.43 cum, 26M, Completed 8/13. I'll be there 11/12

Just cancelled my interview that was scheduled for 11/27/2012. Should be up for grabs. Good luck to everyone!
