Touro - Nevada (TUNCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interview invite! Complete in early August, scheduled for 11/19, I was offered 10/30 and 11/12, but I needed more time to request time off from work. Very excited to see this school!

interview was pretty relaxed 2 on 1 for 20 minutes, just to let you guys know. Also they said we wouldnt hear back until around december 2nd which is a little disappointing. All the faculty and students were cool and friendly. But just an fyi, I would bring snacks or eat before because i was pretty hungry by like 330 or 4pm and they don't have food till the end (515 pm). Good interview day overall though

Does anyone have any info on when the committee meets and when applicants are notified? Wondering if the Dec 2nd date also applies for those who will interview in November or if November interviewees will find out even later..

So is this ultra sound machine only at the lebanon campus or do they have it at the pomona campus as well?

Sorry man, wrong thread...👎

Hey guys, I'm interested in Touro Nevada. After doing some research, this seems like a really nice school, with good rotations, and a decent match list.

I'm considering an SMP, since I'm a California resident, and I have a non-competitive AMCAS GPA, but a 3.3 Cumulative and a 3.4 Science GPA with grade replacement. My MCAT is 30R, and I currently attend UCLA (biochemistry).

My grade trend isn't what it looks like, either. I have had a 3.62 since 2004 over 180 semester units, through nursing prereqs, nursing school, and transfer courses to UCLA, and now at UCLA.

I have a lot of clinical, volunteer, and community service experience, with some research. See my MDApps for more info on that if you want.

Do you think that I have a shot at this school? Henderson is nice.

It's either I go here, or go back East to an SMP. In any case, I will at the least be going to USC for a masters in global medicine during my glide year, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for reading

Wheylp, I'm too broke to afford another secondary and need to conserve for future interviews, especially after waiting this long for TUN's secondary. It sucks, too, cause I love the area.

I hope this affords one of you an opportunity. Good luck guys and gals.

if you are OK with going DO over MD, then don't waste your $ on SMP and just apply to DO schools. You have a good shot at most.

Thanks for the reply.

Just fyi, I spoke to an admissions representative from Touro Henderson today on the phone, too, asking about this same question. They didn't seem to have an answer, though. Maybe that will help others reading this, maybe not.

Thanks again.

As promised, here is my interview experience:
We were told in the beginning of day that the each individual interview would last 20 minutes. I was taken to the interview room later than my scheduled time and was barely given 15 minutes. In my opinion, my interview was rudely interrupted by the staff member who insisted that I just HAD to leave for the campus tour. It was so bad that even one of my interviewers requested with this person that I should be given some more time as my interviewer was in the middle of answering my questions. Despite this request, my interview was still abruptly ended. I believe I was just asked 3-4 questions in total. Some that come to mind were: Why Touro? Why DO? Have I ever given anyone bad news and how I handled it? and a question about my Personal statement. I wanted to ask the interviewers few questions that I had in mind but was never given the chance to ask them all. Needless to say, this left a bad taste in my mouth because I had spent all this $ coming to this interview and I couldn't even be given few extra minutes of interview time. The campus tour was given by someone who admitted that he would not be able to answer a lot of our questions as he mostly deals with the administrative side of the school. The campus really has a "warehouse" feel to it that others talk about. The book store and the library were the smallest I have seen at any of the other schools I have interviewed at. Another thing that I thought was bit odd that unlike other schools, this school made no mention of it pass rates until another interviewee asked about it. I wish we were given some more time with current students as we only saw them at the end of the day during lunch. We were repeatedly informed that the school is a Jewish funded school. I don't have a problem with this but it just seemed unnecessary to be told multiple times about how they were funded. To me, chatting with students was the best part of the day as they were very nice and open to talk about anything. We were informed that we would not hear back about admissions decision until December. More than a month to decide on my 15 minutes of interview. Awesome.
Seems like it left somewhat a bitter taste in your feelings. What's all about that Jewish funds? Do they think that it's a hard fact of some kind to be digested well before the school starts, I didn't get it...

Did they provide the interviewees with an orientation session that might have included the details about the pre-clinical curriculum, clinical sites, exam preparations, financial aid, housing, etc.?

OMS1 at TUN 🙂 feel free to pm me if you have any questions. Good luck on those interviews!

My AACOMAS was released on 9/13 and I still haven't received a secondary.

Has anyone else had this experience? I've emailed them twice already.

I had the same problem! I called on 10/30 to see what was going on and the woman in admissions said they hadn't even started reviewing the apps from 9/13. I sent my LORs anyway... But yeah I guess this is normal.

Thanks for the info! My primary was released 9/28 and I thought I had been screened. There's still hope!

I still have not received the secondary
Primary released 8/21

Looks like they emailed some acceptances early today! We weren't supposed to hear back til the 16th...

Coolio

Edit: I interviewed 10/4

I can't access the 100$ payment page.
What's going on?
What to do now?

TUN has a first-time COMLEX pass rate of 91 or 92%, which is better than average for all DO schools. The percentage of students last year who took the USMLE was way up there, too. I want to say in the 90s.

My primary was released about 3 weeks ago and this is the only school I did not receive a secondary from. Any suggestions? I sent admissions an email already earlier yesterday.

Anyone who took the interview at 7:45am to tell when were you dismissed after the interview? In other words, how long did the interview take?

Not to mention they are three time Touro v Touro basketball champs.

But seriously, Touro-NV came across as being a school that really, really preps their students for boards. The dean even was so bold as to say that you won't really need to study for boards if you do well in your firs two years. (Obviously, everyone will study, but the idea is that the curriculum is focused and their stats back this up.)

This is a pretty great school, I'd say.

I don't understand this school.
I was released sept 7 and still haven't received a secondary and I know I meet all requirements. I emailed them and called them and still nothing. I don't know what else to do?

Got the secondary two hours after my last post. It's almost like they sensed my level of frustration reach a max and decided to send it. I hope I'm not too late because I would really love to go here!

Im really glad you got a secondary, but Im not sure why you thought you met all requirements? There are no guaranteed secondaries for those with certain stats or accomplishments...

But hey, you got one! 👍

Got the secondary today, but I have no idea how I can spare $100 when I'm struggling to pay for interview expenses. Ugh, I wish there was a way to legally make a few hundred in a few days.

Donate plasma a couple times and sell some stuff online! 😉

So the secondary says that they require three LORS: two from professors and one from a physician. It says the same thing on their website. Does anyone know if they accept one pre-med committee letter in place of the two letters from science professors? Thanks.

Just got an email acceptance. Interviewed 10/30. Will be withdrawing, hopefully my spot goes to one of you!

Interviewed 10/30
Accepted today.

is there a fbook group for c/o 2017?

Congrats everyone on the acceptances! Got an acceptance e-mail this morning as well, my very first one 🙂 Still have at least 3 more interviews to attend but what a huge relief to know that I will be a doctor regardless!!
