Touro University - California (TUCOM-CA) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
its also mostly because touro interviews and accepts people with higher mcat scores early in the app year, so that once they are accepted they either pull out from everywhere else or wait for other schools (like md for instance)--if they dont get in they are part of the class and part of that high mcat avg

Really? That seems really misleading. I mean if it's true, that's good news for me. But somehow I don't think they would average in mcat scores of students who don't actually attend.

That's not what he/she means... the op was saying that people with higher MCAT scores are admitted early on in the application season with the hope that that they will commit to Touro before they can wait to hear back elsewhere.

I want to know where they heard that from though.

Received another email this afternoon stating that all of the materials needed to complete my application file have been received and that my application is now eligible for review by the committee. It also states that interview invites are sent out anytime between now and the end of May.

Did anyone who got a secondary not have a prereq done yet and have them bring it up? In my secondary invite email, it says, amongst other things:

not been received/satisfied
Supplemental Application
First letter from Science Professor
Second Letter from Science Professor
Physician letter (MD or DO)
Organic Chemistry
Organic Chemistry - 5 units

When you have successfully completed the prerequisite coursework, please have the school you attended send an official transcript to the address provided below. If you feel a mistake has been made in our evaluation, please contact me via email ([email protected]) and include the course names, terms, and grades for the courses you believe satisfy the requirement

I am taking orgo 2 with a lab this fall, so grades won't be in til December. Does that mean they won't look at my app until that's done, or just that I have to update them(hopefully that would be after an interview) when it's done?

How much time elapsed between your application verification and receipt of secondary app?

uhm I was verified 7/3, released 7/11 and received the supplemental 7/11

Thanks Melomare17; the status on my app just changed to show release dates and I received a secondary app today!

I have been complete since July 15th and I haven't received an ii. Looking at last years thread I think we have another 2 weeks before they start sending them out.

Is it too late to apply? 3.2sgpa 32 MCAT and I just submitted my primary.

What stands out to you guys about this school? I know the rotation issue is a downside but what are the upsides?

How long do I have to wait? How long did it say "Processing" for your applications?

got an email today that my Touro College e-bill statement is ready, did anyone else get this? Have no idea what it's for.

I emailed the bursar and they said to please disregard it was just an error. Hoping for some sort of excitement..

Essays are almost finished, but these other questions are killing me!

15. EXPLAIN WHY YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO APPLY TO TOURO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE: (4lines)

16. WHY SHOULD THE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE ACCEPT YOU INTO THIS YEAR'S CLASS?

I talked with the admissions office, and they said to attach an additional word doc...saying all that in 4 lines would be madness!

Any students currently attending around? I'd really like to hear more about the environment, quality of education, etc. without all the hype.

I condensed mine into the 4 lines provided. Hope this doesn't eliminate me from the running.

I also condensed mine into the allocated space that was given. I found it really odd, but decided to just go with it. I also hope it doesn't eliminate me

I don't know, I think I came up with pretty good, succinct answers in just the 4 lines and really made my case in the page-long essays. I doubt it's a big deal if the separate essay responses are good.

Does the volunteer experience section on the secondary include shadowing experiences?

I love the consistency of the adcoms here. Absolutely adore it.

Not to mention their high tech application.

I also already submitted my secondary about 2 weeks ago with short answers.

I was reading on the Touro website about a laptop requirement. It sounds like you can't have a Mac. Does anyone know anything about this?

So I received a secondary, but I'm worried they just want my money. I got a 24 on the MCAT, I do have a 3.65 gpa with good EC's, but I'm afraid my 24 isn't going to cut it. I am urm, mexican-american. Do I have a shot? Thanks

Do those of us with fee waivers, pay first and then get refunded or do we not pay at all and just submit proof of receiving an AACOMAS waiver? ?

If you want to live in the Bay Area, this is your school. It is whatever you make of it. The students and faculty are nice people. The OMM and doctoring aspect of the education are superb. The boards material (ie. pathology), while they do teach it to you, is best learned on your own with UWorld subscription.

If you are a single male, there are many pharmacy girls who are available to pick from and build a family with. There are also PAs and MPH students. Most of the med students are taken in the beginning, but lots do break up and will be for the taking eventually. 4th year is the time when much of the class has their babies.

We also have very active sports activity in basketball and ping pong. Also some badminton and volleyball. There is an excellent (and cheap) golf course right next to the school.

The reason I attended Touro was because there is an opportunity to stay in SoCal for rotations and residency for a lot of competitive specialties. As a DO, you must develop the right connections to get into competitive specialties, and Touro provides a way.

Any reason to pick Touro over Western? Other than Bay>Pomona?

not really. a med school is just a med school. most important difference is always going to be location.

Interviews started Aug 15th last year, Fingers cross!

Not true half the class uses apple. You could probably just use a phone if you wanted to.

Does anyone know this school's policy on sending additional letters of recommendation?
