well, I've got a tucson acceptance with a 99% chance of being turned down and available to one of the wait-listers.
too bad I can't open up bidding for it...
but that's one more person who didn't get an acceptance who's going to be going to U of A med next year, so don't let it get you down.
Does that mean you got into phx or somewhere else?

Yeah I'll open a spot up to the waitlist as well. I hear the girls are great in AZ. Makes me excited to head to your guys' territory.

One word: Tempe. You are gonna love it.

It is fun at first, but skeezer after skeezer gets sooo old. There are so many braindead barbies here its disgusting. You can only put up with hearing about celebrity gossip, handbags, and "omg I was like sooo trashed" so many times before you start to crave a girl who has brains and ambition more than a cute bunny tanned-in-tattoo. But dont get me wrong, get your fun in while you can still tolerate it, and a word of caution: wrap it tight my friend.

Congrats to everyone who got in!!!

This is my first post here and I have so many questions, but let me ask one here first.

Would some of you who got in mind sharing your stats, especially those who thought their stats were less than stellar going into the process with UA?

I have watched this thread with anticipation, and am surprised. I am elated for those that made it in and have empathy for those that didn't. The internet is truly a wonderful thing, I am a member of many forums and have not quite felt like this about a thread before. Thank you for letting me come along for the ride.

Good luck to all of you

Hahahaha you hit the nail on the head my friend! I'm hoping that I can meet more of the brains and ambition type at med school because when all a girl can talk about is the latest gossip and how they want to get their nails done, well it gets to the point where you don't even wanna encounter those girls anymore.

I see what you mean, I guess it would get old fast if you go to ASU. But for me, it was always fun to visit!!! In phx as you won't be surrounded by those barbies 24/7 it should be a fun place to go.

Med school admissions is the most anxiety stirring, and in my opinion one of the most ******ed processes you have to go through (I think it just needs a match system, like they do for residency). That probably has something to do with your feelings about the thread!🙂

Two quick questions:
1) Does anyone know if Tucson has a 2nd look weekend?
2) When do classes start in the fall?? Anyone know??

Thanks!

Considering I was an impartial observer it was pretty intense, it was like watching a movie and cheering for the small rebel cause against the almighty Empire (I know Star Wars is played out).

So you haven't applied this year but are planning on it?

No I am not ready to apply yet, I will be a junior in the spring and am changing majors. I have been lurking around here for about 6 months, mainly to get information on what it takes to get into, and succeed in MS. I am currently a nursing major at Arizona State. I saw this thread pop up and have been watching it. It's been wild though, I read one thread and am elated for someone, then read the next and feel bummed for them. This is the first "med-school" acceptance thread I have watched, so maybe some of you vets are more used to it, but I simply had to get a post in, and so I registered and here I am..........

Ahh I see. Well I hope it has given you some good info!

Well, apparently I did get accepted at Tucson after all. Although I never got an email, I got the acceptance letter today in the mail. I am sure the letter is official but I am going to email Ann tomorrow just to make sure.

It was confusing at first, for I while I couldn't figure out what it would be as I never got an email yesterday. It was a nice surprise! I'm still not giving up on phx though...

What?? I will never cease to be amazed. I think I set a world record for the mailbox dash though (empty)

Congrats, Rooter!! You sure were put through the ringer unintentionally. 😉

Well that gives me some hope!

Furthermore, I got an email back from Anna stating that the total number of applicants considered this year for the Class of 2012 was the following:

Tucson-574
Phx-510

They went through 54 on the waitlist last year. Hope this helps for us Class of 2012 Frightfuls! AAAH!

majatoi or anyone, is this number is a little bit lower than last year's # of apps for the Tucson campus? It might not be a significant difference, but I was just curious. thanks!

This doesn't affect any of you in the current application cycle (good luck next week!), but I read in one of the dean's communiques that they are planning to open a few slots to OOS applicants in the future. I'm home know, but when I get back to work I can find the pdf if anyone is interested.

Here is the citation I was referring to. No dates or timeline on it, but just something I thought future applicants might be interested to know:

From the Dean's Monthly Update January 2008
"One of the more interesting initiatives, related to both programs, is the consideration of opening applications to the College of Medicine to students from out-of-state. We have known for some time that this would be needed as total COM enrollment grows, to insure that we have a substantially larger pool of qualified students to fill our increased number of positions. There will be a cap on the percentage of out-of-state students who will be accepted, most likely in the range of 10-15%."

I confirmed it earlier this morning, I was accepted. They sent my email to an old address that is now defunct. Sorry guys, it wasn't a mass error or anything...

Stoked!!!

They need to allow for trading of medical school acceptances.

congrats to you all!

So are you going to go to Tucson?
I don't know. Like I said earlier, PHX I would for sure. With TUC, it really comes down to if I can justify paying so much to go OOS. I'm not sure, but I'm leaning towards staying here right now.

Hey does anyone know when TUC second look is? Early April right?

This is a bit lower than last year, last year they had a bit over 700 applicants, if I am not mistaken. (I am a reapplicant)

Hope this helps... Good luck to you all this Wednesday.

i would also like to know when the second-look is...i have no idea they had one.

oh, thank you...for some reason i had thought those went out next monday

Hahha no UA likes to makes us wait.
Seriously I don't think it's liek that...they probably just need more data in front of them to rank the wait-list..who's accepting; who's not accepting. Who got into both schools and which one are they going to attend and free up a a spot.....
I just wonder if now is a good time to send a letter of interest.

does anyone know when the waitlist is going to get ranked?

Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that the waitlist is ranked sometime in April.

Really? I could have sworn they said it was going to be in late march on my interview day, but I suppose that may be just wishful thinking. Maybe someone could call?? Pretty please?

does anyone know when the waitlist is going to get ranked?

I was told a couple of different things in the interview, but I emailed Ann this past Friday and she stated all the candidates selected for the waitlist will also be notified of their rank in the email (same day).

Good luck to you all!

(Don't forget denials come out the same day too... EEK!)

Is Ann at the tuscon or phoenix campus?

I don't think that wanting to stay in Arizona is a plus for applying to U of A medical school at all. I applied 3 (!) times and never got in, despite having had an MCAT and gpa which were well above averages for those accepted at U of A medical school or anywhere else for that matter . . . my dream was to participate in their CUP program (I don't know if it exists anymore) and do some work with spanish speaking populations and underserved people in the state (I am a life-long resident of Arizona, so I think that if you are from the area you have more of an interest of serving people who were like the one you grew up with IMHO), . . . maybe the interviews matter more, my three interviews were in Tucson (3 each year for a total of 9), and all finished with me feeling pretty yucky about the whole process, i.e. I never had an interviewer that enthuasiastic about me or the school or the state. . . I think U of A med school realizes that students who graduate from this MD allopathic program can go to where many consider the grass to be greener i.e. there are not very many prestigious residencies in Arizona compared to the national level and doctors in Arizona face higher malpractice etc . . . it is VERY telling that a large percentage of U of A med students are turned off by the IM and pediatrics programs at U of A which include large numbers of IMGs . . . or possibly there is a bias against U of A med students at their own programs, regardless Arizona fills residencies by getting out of staters, and maybe 70% of these leave the state anyhow, I have seen a couple U of A med students in Arizona residencies who can't wait to leave the state, so I don't think U of A medical school rewards loyalty at all, . . . one student I interviewed with in Tucson who got in I later saw at a residency in another state and remembered me from interview . . . I think those who want to use U of A med school as a spring board to bigger things are successful, but if you really want to stay in the state it is hard, there simply aren't a lot of true blue U of A med students who did residency in Arizona, stay in Arizona and contribute back to the community, go figure. Most of the faculty at U of A are transplants, nothing wrong with that per se, but it is obvious that connections play a bigger role than wanting to serve the populace and having done a lot volunteer work and research at the U. U of A med school has to give a lot of lip service about helping native serve the state, but it is just to deflect criticism because the states subsidizes the education of a medical school class where maybe 10% or less end up practicing in AZ.

It makes me want to cry hearing how they are going to accept more out of state applicants, I certainly had the academic qualifications and the drive and would have made use of U of A medical school electives for those who want to work in the state, plus I am very dedicated to research, my usmle scores are >95 on both steps too, . . . so I think it is preposterous they are doing this as AZ produces a lot of talent that never gets the chance to play on their home court.

Same with me.... Third time re-applicant, tried to preach the whole stay in Arizona thing, I don't think seem to be impressed by that. About 55% leave the state regardless, you would think they would be more loyal to the ones who are being loyal to the U. I applied only to the U this time. sigh.

(However, thank goodness I applied to Midwestern University this year, and secured a DO spot there, but.. sigh nonetheless)

Another FYI for you Tucsoners, they placed 106 on the waitlist this year, I hope all of you place 40 or earlier... so you can sleep better at night. Although they went through 54 last year, it won't help you sleep tomorrow if you place 55.. 🙁

Do you happen to know if that 54 ppl was off the waitlist at just tuscon, or at both campuses combined?

Check your email at 8:30AM tomorrow morning, cause that's when they will be sent out by (the Tucson campus that is). I guarantee it will make or break your day.

I love the idea of being assigned a waitlist number...that means I get to see how far I am from being one of their top choices to be in their class of 110 or 48. 🙂

Number 100 on the waitlist!...go wildcats!

PS growing up in Tucson was great because we would go buy bball tickets from scalpers before the games...it was awesome...but now the school doesn't even have a good team so that isn't even a selling point. ACC baby...ACC.

Not mine 🙂

Nevertheless----Good luck to everyone who is hoping for a low waitlist number (or to be high up on the list...whichever wording works best for you)!!!

I just called Phx, and they will be sending out waitlist emails around 8AM, but I would just check once and for all at 8:30AM to prevent unnecessary freaking out. The Phx waitlist is not ranked in the email, but if you call them after you get it, they will be give you a good idea of where you are on the waitlist.

I believe it was combined because it was one adcom last year. This is the first year that the adcom is separate.

Well everyone...I wish you all GOOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!:luck::luck::luck:

It's my philosophy that what is meant to be, will be. So whether we are #1 on the waitlist or rejected, just remember the future will hold great things for us all! (Hopefully that involves med school, eventually!)

Get a good night's rest and post what your status is!
