I am having trouble deciding between these two great schools. Assuming tuition was the same, which school would you choose and why?

The Established school or the new one? Oakland is in a nicer area but other than that have to think Wayne is better

Wayne may have a better rep as a school but Oakland's associating hospitals outrank Wayne's associating hospitals by a landslide, which is why I think the first class ended up with great residencies.

Wayne is certainly the more established school, but the Beaumont health system is very strong and probably in a better place financially than the Henry Ford/DMC. I don't think either name soars above the other. Factors I would consider:

1. Cost
2. The different patient populations in Royal Oak and Detroit. Are you passionate about working with the underserved? Are you interested in emergency medicine?
3. Research opportunities - stronger at Wayne, though you could probably find clinical projects at OUWB too. OUWB requires that capstone project.
4. There are significant advantages to being part of a 100 person class (or whatever OUWB is now), rather than a 300 person class.
5. Fit--where would you honestly rather be, other factors aside? Would you rather live in Detroit or Oakland? I prefer Detroit, though Royal Oak is nice.

Personally, I was drawn more to Wayne.

@FlashMed13 , OUWB matched fine last year, but I didn't think it was a spectacularly impressive list. Something like half of the students matched at Beaumont, which, though solid, makes me wonder if their other competitive options were limited. It's really hard to read match lists, though, especially when the class only had ~50 students.

You make some very good points except about 30% placed at beaumont, which isn't too bad for the first graduating class. You are right though, 50 is a small number to base it on. Hopefully the results for this year are even better. They are doing very well for a new school though. What surprised me is that the most recent disclosure of matches at wayne (2012) shows about 27% of students matching at wayne state associated hospitals. For a medical school that has existed for that long, those aren't very good results.

Actually, 25% home-matching is pretty normal. I thought OUWB's percentage was much higher than that. Perhaps I'm misremembering.

The choice is really suburban versus urban. The cost really isn't the same if you are instate, as Oakland is private, Wayne is public. Seems that Wayne would be much more cost effective if you are IS. I vote for Wayne State, much larger, more established, more broad urban population to learn from. Good luck to you and all in Michigan!

Where are you getting these rankings from?
