William Carey (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for your reply. I received a PM from a WCU MS2, and am awaiting her reply.

As soon as I get it sorted out, I'd really like to share the information with the rest of my pre-professional club. Those last statements made us all feel sort of awkward as well as raising a huge red flag that hasn't be resigned. Only one person has from my school has applied since then, and that's a shame because I think there are special things in store for Hattiesburg. 😳

I'm not a student at WCUCOM (currently applying there though). I do understand where you are coming from but my thing is why should one form negative opinion about the school just because one person from the school said this at the meeting? Just curious to hear your thoughts.

Sorry if this has already been addressed but how are clinicals at WCUCOM?

Our first class started their clinicals Wednesday, August 1, 2012. WCU, Dr. Jim Turner (in particular), received a commendation this last Spring from COCA on our clinical rotations and how it is set up.

The clinicals are set up so that you do your 3rd year (core) rotations at a "hub site". This is your base for the 3rd year and you do NOT have to do any moving around. These "hub sites" are all over Mississippi, as well as a few others scattered in Arkansas, Louisana, and NW Florida.

Hope this helps

anyone happen to know how many secondaries are sent out and how many interviews are given?

anyone happen to know how many secondaries are sent out and how many interviews are given?

Here's something I found from last year's thread:

So I've heard that the school received ~2000 applications, sent back 300 secondary applications and invited 160 for an interview for a total class size of 100 (2016). Not sure what the average MCAT or sGPA is though.

Not sure how accurate the information is.

The post above sounds about right in terms of number of secondaries & interviews. The size of our last two classes have been 105.

The class size was around 105 I thought, so 160 interviews for 105 students, doesnt that seem a little light? not that im complaining if i get lucky enough to get an interview here, lol

WCUCOM only interviews those students in whom they are genuinely interested. It may seem light, but if you get an interview, you definitely know they are looking at you, not wasting your time 🙂

Anyone know how much WCU cares about the MCAT? I'd really like to go there, but I can't seem to break a 21 on my full lengths. It's been seven years since my pre-reqs. Everything else about my application is great, MPH GPA 4.0, biology major cGPA 3.5, pre-req GPA 3.6, 2 years research experience, mission trips to Mozambique and South Africa, leadership and drumming at church, etc. I've driven down once to visit the school, and I have a friend there now who loves it. I'm also shadowing a DO who says she, "knows people at WCU."

Just got the secondary this afternoon. I currently have a committee letter and a DO letter. The secondary also asks for a science faculty member. Does this mean I have to go and get a letter from a science faculty?

Called today and she told me I had to have an additional letter. I'll need to pull some strings since I have already graduated and was banking on my committee and DO letter covering all my bases.

Is it okay to send letters to this school using Interfolio? The secondary says all letters must be sent directly by the recommender?

I sent mine via Interfolio two years ago. But just in case things have changed, call Emily Bennett in the admissions office.

This is the only DO school that I have not heard back from yet. I hope this is a good sign that they are starting to roll out the secondaries!

For everyone asking about average MCAT and GPA
.Last year, we received about 1700 applications. The average GPA of those accepted last year was around a 3.4 for both science and cumulative. The average MCAT was between 24 & 25..
. .
.Thanks,.
.Emily .

Just got MCAT back in, 26O. 3.7 sGPA. What do you think?

Sent mine through interfolio but Donna Day sent me an email today asking me to send it to her box or to her email address. Hope this helps! (down another $6)...

did anybody get interviews yet?... according to last years thread, people got them like 8/18 for 2nd week of september dates..

Any info about how the inaugural class did in their boards this summer?

I called today to verify that my file was complete and Donna Day told me that interviews won't start until the end of September this year... so invites should be by the end of this month hopefully!?

Do you mean we should send the LOR's directly to her e-mail address and not to the school, but still using interfolio?

you can use interfolio

So, according to the previous poster, we need to release our letters directly do Donna Day's e-mail address and not to the School itself via Interfolio (i.e- indicate her e-mail address and now WCU COM on the release page of interfolio)? Sorry to keep asking this about this, but I just want to make sure I understand

I would ask her in r an email. She responds quickly and it's the safest way. I sent it to the school but she also asked me to send it to her email I'm not sure why.

Whoo interview invite. Sep 24th. Email told me all spots may be full by then....

Yeah, I just got an invite as well. I was excited about the invite, but the statement that the slots may be filled by the time I interview was a bit discouraging....Jeese, so much uncertainty

Must have been a "recycled" email from last cycle that did not get corrected. There have not been any interviews for the Class of 2017.

How many people that reside out of the Gulf South region have received a secondary? I'm from the Midwest-- I contacted WCU about not receiving a secondary app yet and they told me they are still focusing on applicants from the Gulf South region. Anyone outside this area received a secondary?

called and verified my file was complete but I haven't heard anything other than that. I guess they didn't like my secondary lol cuz no more love for me. 🙁

Soooo........ what about those board scores?

Interviews haven't started here yet 🙂 Keep your chins up! still a lot of time in the application cycle!

Just a guess... First, they will look closely at MS residents; then, expand their review of applications from gulf region residents. 🙂

II 10/10 as well!!! Anyone know when the earliest interviews are?

Got my secondary in today! Hopefully I will get an interview soon!

Anyone know the turn around time for that?

I got an invite for October 22nd! who is with me? 😀
