I'm a little nervous. Quillen is my top choice school, but I was rejected pre-secondary when I applied two years ago (although that was with a much weaker app, and I was verified in late October instead of June). It'll be a long wait for this secondary.

What do mean by it'll be a long wait. Does it normally take a while for them to get the secondaries out?

It's a long wait for me personally, just because of the previous rejection. Since everything seems to be running a week behind this year, I would expect the secondary in late July, early August at (hopefully) the latest.

Best of luck to you. Your tenacity is admirable.

Choose and answer one of the following questions (indicating your choice 'A' or 'B' preceding the answer):

A. "I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug." Without summarizing the literal meaning of this statement, explain what it means to you personally.

B. Two 18 year old boys suffer a badly broken leg on the football field. One is the son of a well-insured businessman, and the other the son of a divorced, convenience store clerk with no health insurance. Both require orthopedic care and follow up. When the insured father calls for ortho appointments, they gladly schedule his son in the next day or so. When the uninsured mom calls for ortho appointments, the office tells her that the next "free clinic" visit they have open is in two weeks, or she could come to the office with $350.00 cash for the initial visit, which she does not have. As a future physician, how will you be a part of the solution to the problem highlighted by this scenario?

Choose and answer one of the following questions (indicating your choice 'C' or 'D' preceding the answer):

C. To which historical figure do you think would you relate well and why?

D. What, other than your faith, family, and career, do you value most and why?

Choose and answer one of the following questions (indicating your choice 'E' or 'F' preceding the answer):

E. People often respond to stress in very different ways based on past experiences and/or personality traits. Whether it be a single, devastating event or a lengthy battle, please describe a stressful experience you have endured and what measures you took to handle it.

F. If overwhelming tragedy were to fall on you today, how would you get through it? Upon whom do you lean when things get unbearably tough?

(Optional Question) The Quillen College of Medicine routinely receives several hundred applications each year from well-qualified applicants. Please use this space to explain why we should consider you above these other applicants.

It's a different secondary from most of the others I did. Which is good, because I was getting tired of diversity essays for every school.

Got my pre-secondary rejection over the weekend. 🙁 I kind of knew it was coming as I am OOS, but I tried to contact them to let them know I had very strong ties to Carter County, but it did not work. Good luck everyone!!

FormerPhysicist, any word/character counts for the essays?

I received a request for supplementary information today!

Got rejection in mail today. I've had some troubles with residency, so I want to make sure it's not because of that. Did you rejection say anything about you being rejected due to that, or did it just say you were rejected?

Or if anyone else can answer that for me.
I mean, my stats are not great, but I didn't think they were bad enough to be rejected pre-secondary so soon.

It said that my "credentials were not strong enough as a non-resident applicant."

Anyone else only receive the QCOM outreach survey email and not hear anything else?

Had the same thing happen. Primary submitted 7/17, survey email 7/25, secondary invite 8/9. I was really starting to wonder.

Yep, I got the same letter :lame: What shatters my confidence even more is that they sent me the rejection letter even before receiving my MCAT score :bang: I have a good GPA and plenty of research/volunteering/clinical experience...what could be so horrible on my primary that they didn't even wait to see the score?! I guess being a late applicant is one of my main problems :lame:

Edited to add: I just looked at their website a read this under "Selection Factors":

"Because Quillen College of Medicine is a state-supported institution, preference for admission is given to U.S. citizens who are Tennessee residents. Of particular interest are those applicants giving strong evidence of their commitment to a career in primary care and/or rural medicine."

This is another place I fell short...guess I should have read more carefully before applying 🙄

According to their website, roughly 1400 OOS applicants applied. 21 of those got interviewed, 6 were accepted. That's a success rate of 0.42%, so I don't think being rejected here OOS is indicative of any issues with your primary.

That being said, I've been complete/under review here for almost 2 weeks. The email said to expect to hear from them "soon". This app cycle stuff is stressful.

Jesus, one must really love some rural medicine to apply here being OOS.

Every since I completed and submitted the secondary, when I try to login to the website, I get an invalid credentials message. Anyone have any insight for this?

Interview invite just now!!!! First one of the season for me, so excited!

It was by email this afternoon, scheduled the interview for September 11th. I'm still a bit shocked.

I got the complete email on the 9th, so 3 weeks passed between complete/interview invite emails.

^ Hoping to hear something soon. I believe interviews start this week.

Thanks for the update!

Do you have any particular insights that may be helpful to applicants? Anything that you particularly like about the school or area?

Rejection letter today. Two years in a row that I didn't even get an interview here. Still in shock after much improvement from last cycle. Oh well...

Did anyone else get an email about them doing an initiatal screening that you met their requirements but were placed on hold? Do you think they actually looked at the app? I was on hold for MCAT, which I finally got back. Not quite as high as I'd hoped. Has anyone heard of them accepting anyone IS with mid-20s MCAT and around 3.7cGPA??

Don't know anyone personally, but I think being IS you have a shot. Average mcat for the 2013 matriculants was about 28

I attended the interview sessions yesterday. To put it simply, this school is incredible. I can't say enough about how much I liked what I saw. The people, the atmosphere, the level of technology (one of the faculty is even experimenting with Google Glass as a teaching tool), and the setting were everything I expected they would be and more. Now to wait the long month for the 10/15 decision day.

For everyone else that gets an interview invite later in the cycle, try not to stress about the interviews themselves. Both of my interviews were very laid back/relaxed and by what I heard from the rest of my interview group, so were theirs. The interview day is quite enjoyable once you get there and get past the initial case of nerves.

I like everything about the school and area haha. JC isn't a large city, which I like. Its a college town, but I don't feel its hard to get away from that if its not your thing (not mine). There is plenty of outdoor stuff to do with beautiful mountains and lakes nearby. When winter comes there will be plenty of nearby places in NC to go skiing. Knoxville isn't far away (Go Vols) and Asheville (a pretty neat city) makes for a nice day trip. I'm really happy with the city so far. I was familiar with the area before, so I had some idea of what to expect.

The school is great. Small class size for a more close knit group. The facilities are great. 24/7 student study center only open to med students thats pretty new. Complete with kitchen, patio, and lounge with flat screen tv's. There's also plenty of private study rooms. We use iPads everyday in anatomy lab. Apple tv is used with the iPads and flat screen tv's around the room. 4 people/group, 1 group/body (I've heard this is a great ratio that is not always the case at other schools). The professors I've had so far are great. Some of them will go out of their way to help you (sometimes even with serious personal matters). JCMC is next door with a level 1 trauma center and its children's hospital is a St. Jude's affiliate. The VA hospital is right next door as well.

Overall, this is exactly wear I wanted to be and I'm very happy to be here. Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll try to answer them the best I can!

It depends on other factors (EC's, interview, where you're from), but it is most certainly possible and does happen. 👍

JC, thanks for the input. I'll be interviewing in a few weeks, so maybe I'll bump into you.

I also have a few questions. Are lectures mandatory? Are there recordings of each lecture posted online? Although you're a first year, can you talk to how well the school prepares students for Boards? Do people end up matching into the residencies that they want to in terms of both specialties and program choice?

Hi all, I've been complete since early August but haven't heard back. Anyone else in the same boat?

IS applicant here. Just turned down an II from here the other day. Hope one of you gets it. Good luck!

Yup. Over a month, haven't heard a thing.
Funny how I posted that last night and I received an II this morning.

IS, high 20s MCAT, <3.9 GPA, complete mid-aug, non-urm

EDIT: Just saw the previous post. Maybe I took your II spot? Was it for Oct 1? If so, thanks!!!! lol

II today for mid-October too! I love this school, and I can't wait! 😀

Still haven't even received secondary... All of you getting interview invites, did you submit your apps really early? Mine was verified 10 days ago and after the email that basically says they have received my application, I've heard nothing. Then again, I guess 10 days isn't that long..
