well if the facebook group is any indication, there are several that studied undergrad at Yale, Princeton, Tulane, Miami, Duke, and that is from the first few pages. Of course, that doesn't tell me what (if any) Indiana ties they had. IU tends to have a pretty heavy in state preference. Some people get thrown off because quite a few OOS matriculate every year, but the med school class is massive (second largest in the country) so there is a fairly low percentage. If you have stats above the average for IU then go ahead and apply, as the secondary is non existant save for a $30 fee and it is pretty inexpensive to apply to. Be sure to highlight any Indiana ties you may have.organdonor, can you tell me if the nonresident students mostly come from midwest states? How much chance for an east coast / west coast applicant?
http://www.medicine.iu.edu/body.cfm?id=174Eligibility/Interviews. Indiana residents who have a science and cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and an MCAT score of at least 25, with no individual score below 7, are eligible for an interview. Non-residents without apparent Indiana ties will be considered on an individual basis. The applications of nonresidents who have attended college in Indiana or who have other close ties to the State may be given greater consideration.
I just received an email saying my application was complete. Has anybody received the supplemental packet yet?
The website says something about evaluation FORMS through AMCAS...is this just the usual submitting letters to AMCAS or are there actual forms? Also it said notify the Adm. Office who will be writing which letter.
Just got screened out as OOS... ouch. At least they saved me the secondary fee.
Rejected....out of state so I figured this was coming.
Ouch. Sorry to hear that. I'm also OOS, so my rejection letter is probably just around the corner. My AMCAS was verified 06/04, so I should be in the earliest batch possible. Not sure why the delay in my rejection letter.
Did you receive by letter or e-mail? Do you mind sharing your stats?
Got it by email this morning. 30R MCAT, 3.8 GPA, but I lack a lot of clinical experience, so that might have been part of the reason.
LOL, why are you so pessimistic? Why would you apply if you believe you'll be rejected? That attitude is so confidence-destroying and doesn't help your application. My stats are 33R, 3.7 overall, 3.5 science. I DO have a load of clinical experience, but also a non-trad app, so not sure if these just compensate for each other.
I have good letters that would really add to my candidacy. Too bad they'll make decisions before they get to see the letters.
I'll post my rejection as soon as I get it.

Actually, you probably have survived the screening and have an interview invite on the way! Remember to check your mail box, as Indiana sends invites by snail mail only.
Congratulations!

Even as an OOS applicant I think you've got a decent shot of getting a secondary. Surely your GPA is above whatever their cutoff is, and I doubt your MCAT will keep you screened out of anywhere. I may end up eating my words, but that's just my $0.02.

Same here...got it today. Oh well, first rejection but not too bummed by it since it was probably a pretty obvious rejection. No Cali love..
Sorry BullDog, not trying to make you feel discouraged..just a little disappointing to have a rejection so early.
And about it being an "obvious" rejection..It just seems like IU tends to favor in-staters more but I applied anyways because it would have been nice to go there since I have a significant connection to the state.
Ah BullDog, but just a few posts ago you were even expecting an obvious rejection, and I felt uncomfortable by then. Now it is your turn to be uncomfortable, haha!LOL. No worries. I actually found it slightly amusing that every OOS have describe their rejection as "obvious" as if they're pointing a finger at me saying "you're next". That's really a bummer that they didn't put more consideration into your strong ties to the state. Oh well. Better luck with your other schools. 🙂

I bet $5 that you will get an invite. I hope to get one as well. As an OOS my only connection to Indiana is that my wife's uncle lives there, but we just heard a few days ago that he is going to move to Europe next year, dang.

On the IU site, they specified certain forms of letters of recommendation that we should have. Do they not accept premedical advisory committee letters? Because that is what I have done.
Hi Everyone!
Just joined after realizing I spend nearly every day on this website. I am especially nervous for this application. I grew up in Indiana and graduated from high school there. I have only recently (this year) become a non-resident due to working in St. Louis. However, my entire family lives in Indiana. I really hope this is enough to be considered someone with significant ties to the state of Indiana![]()
Looks like committee letters will work fine. Nice.I am in the same boat, so I emailed this very question to the admissions office just now.
I'll post the reply.
Im confused, do they send out rejection emails before they send application receipt notifications or after? I am OOS as well, and got a receipt of application email, and a we ll get back to you in 4 - 6 weeks, does that mena I'll prb be getting a rejection email soon? or are OOS screened even before they receive the application receipt email? IM bracing myself
My understanding is that if you haven't gotten a rejection letter, you're still in the running. They notify of interview invites by snail mail so it's basically a question of which one gets to you first: rejection e-mail or invite letter.
.I kinda like this system- fill out a secondary, only if you know you are interviewing. However, sometimes the extra info you write about yourself on the secondary might help to get you an interview.
It has been almost 4 weeks since I first received the initial email, so I should be hearing something soon, either through email or an invite letter.
I just received the following via e-mail:
"Your application for admission to the 2011 entering class of Indiana University School of Medicine has been carefully reviewed. We regret to inform you that your record does not make it possible for us to include your application in the group selected for further consideration. There are far more applicants than there are places in medical school and, unfortunately, we are only able to interview a limited number of applicants.
..."
Good luck to the rest of you!
...at least we didn't have to waste money or time on a secondary :/
Seriously. IU deserves props for that (if nothing else). That should be the norm.
