Good luck to all of this year's applicants! It will be a rollercoaster, but it's worth it... trust me. :luck:

According to MSAR, Indiana does not have a secondary. It did not have one in previous years either.

We didn't have a secondary last year. We just paid something like $30 and signed somethingthat said we are capable of doing what a doctor would be required to do such as communicate and use our hands and stuff. Good luck everyone! Anyone who is considering edp feel free to pm me.

organdonor, can you tell me if the nonresident students mostly come from midwest states? How much chance for an east coast / west coast applicant?

well if the facebook group is any indication, there are several that studied undergrad at Yale, Princeton, Tulane, Miami, Duke, and that is from the first few pages. Of course, that doesn't tell me what (if any) Indiana ties they had. IU tends to have a pretty heavy in state preference. Some people get thrown off because quite a few OOS matriculate every year, but the med school class is massive (second largest in the country) so there is a fairly low percentage. If you have stats above the average for IU then go ahead and apply, as the secondary is non existant save for a $30 fee and it is pretty inexpensive to apply to. Be sure to highlight any Indiana ties you may have.
Eligibility/Interviews. Indiana residents who have a science and cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and an MCAT score of at least 25, with no individual score below 7, are eligible for an interview. Non-residents without apparent Indiana ties will be considered on an individual basis. The applications of nonresidents who have attended college in Indiana or who have other close ties to the State may be given greater consideration.

I just received an email saying my application was complete. Has anybody received the supplemental packet yet?

The website says something about evaluation FORMS through AMCAS...is this just the usual submitting letters to AMCAS or are there actual forms? Also it said notify the Adm. Office who will be writing which letter.

I received an e-mail from ISUM stating that they received my application and that I should hear back from them in 4-6 weeks.

According to IUSM, you only get the supplemental package if you are invited for an interview and such invites will be sent out in 4-6 weeks.

Thanks x3r, I guess I just needed to read that email a little closer.

I think you're referring to the Dean of Students evaluation form. It's my understanding that, if invited for an interview, you will receive this in a supplementary packet, along with a couple other forms and a request for a secondary fee. We should be getting these in another 4-6 weeks. It also says that they will be printing off our rec. letters from AMCAS sometime before the interview, so I guess one could inform them of the various authors anytime before that.

How do you highlight Indiana ties in the application? Pretty much my entire family lives in Indiana so how do I let the application committee know that?

Rejected....out of state so I figured this was coming.

Just got screened out as OOS... ouch. At least they saved me the secondary fee.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. I'm also OOS, so my rejection letter is probably just around the corner. My AMCAS was verified 06/04, so I should be in the earliest batch possible. Not sure why the delay in my rejection letter.

Did you receive by letter or e-mail? Do you mind sharing your stats?

Got it by email this morning. 30R MCAT, 3.8 GPA, but I lack a lot of clinical experience, so that might have been part of the reason.

I DO have a load of clinical experience, but also a non-trad app, so not sure if these just compensate for each other.

I have good letters that would really add to my candidacy. Too bad they'll make decisions before they get to see the letters.

I'll post my rejection as soon as I get it.

LOL, why are you so pessimistic? Why would you apply if you believe you'll be rejected? That attitude is so confidence-destroying and doesn't help your application.

Actually, you probably have survived the screening and have an interview invite on the way! Remember to check your mail box, as Indiana sends invites by snail mail only.

Congratulations!

Thanks for the encouragement. But let's save the congratulations for when I receive that letter. It's awfully early to be receiving an interview invite already. It's possible that I will be screen further and no decision has been made yet.

Anyone else notice that IU's website used to say Indiana residents were guaranteed an interview with 25 MCAT and 3.2 GPA, now it says these are the requirements for eligibility. Is there a difference?

Even as an OOS applicant I think you've got a decent shot of getting a secondary. Surely your GPA is above whatever their cutoff is, and I doubt your MCAT will keep you screened out of anywhere. I may end up eating my words, but that's just my $0.02.

Same here...got it today. Oh well, first rejection but not too bummed by it since it was probably a pretty obvious rejection. No Cali love..

Argh... all these pessimism from OOS-ers is making me feel a little discouraged. 🙁

What is so "obvious" about any rejection? Do you not look into a school to see if it was a "good fit" for you before applying? Am I weird for doing that?

Sorry BullDog, not trying to make you feel discouraged..just a little disappointing to have a rejection so early.

And about it being an "obvious" rejection..It just seems like IU tends to favor in-staters more but I applied anyways because it would have been nice to go there since I have a significant connection to the state.

LOL. No worries. I actually found it slightly amusing that every OOS have describe their rejection as "obvious" as if they're pointing a finger at me saying "you're next". That's really a bummer that they didn't put more consideration into your strong ties to the state. Oh well. Better luck with your other schools. 🙂

Ah BullDog, but just a few posts ago you were even expecting an obvious rejection, and I felt uncomfortable by then. Now it is your turn to be uncomfortable, haha!

I bet $5 that you will get an invite. I hope to get one as well. As an OOS my only connection to Indiana is that my wife's uncle lives there, but we just heard a few days ago that he is going to move to Europe next year, dang.

Thanks. I'll take that as a compliment. I have absolutely no connection to Indiana... but the fact that 40% of their graduates go into primary care does appeal to me.

No invite letter yet but I know it's still early. Maybe next week. Good luck on getting yours. Maybe we'll interview on the same day.

On the IU site, they specified certain forms of letters of recommendation that we should have. Do they not accept premedical advisory committee letters? Because that is what I have done.

Hi Everyone!
Just joined after realizing I spend nearly every day on this website. I am especially nervous for this application. I grew up in Indiana and graduated from high school there. I have only recently (this year) become a non-resident due to working in St. Louis. However, my entire family lives in Indiana. I really hope this is enough to be considered someone with significant ties to the state of Indiana :xf:

I am in the same boat, so I emailed this very question to the admissions office just now.

I'll post the reply.

I'm sure if you explain it to them, they'll treat you as IS for evaluation purposes. But you can only declare residency to one state, in terms of reduced tuition.

Looks like committee letters will work fine. Nice.

Via email from IUSOM...

Peter,

Committee letters are perfectly fine in lieu of the normal letters of recommendation.

Sincerely,

Im confused, do they send out rejection emails before they send application receipt notifications or after? I am OOS as well, and got a receipt of application email, and a we ll get back to you in 4 - 6 weeks, does that mena I'll prb be getting a rejection email soon? or are OOS screened even before they receive the application receipt email? IM bracing myself

My understanding is that if you haven't gotten a rejection letter, you're still in the running. They notify of interview invites by snail mail so it's basically a question of which one gets to you first: rejection e-mail or invite letter.

I kinda like this system- fill out a secondary, only if you know you are interviewing. However, sometimes the extra info you write about yourself on the secondary might help to get you an interview.
It has been almost 4 weeks since I first received the initial email, so I should be hearing something soon, either through email or an invite letter :xf:.

I'm in the same mindset. Thought they did say 4-6 weeks, right? So it could another 2 more weeks.

I just received the following via e-mail:

"Your application for admission to the 2011 entering class of Indiana University School of Medicine has been carefully reviewed. We regret to inform you that your record does not make it possible for us to include your application in the group selected for further consideration. There are far more applicants than there are places in medical school and, unfortunately, we are only able to interview a limited number of applicants.

..."

Good luck to the rest of you!

JUST got the rejection e-mail. 🙁. My very first one. Ouch. Now I'm seeing the validity of how everyone has been saying an "obvious" rejection for OOS applicants.

Bummer how they don't review LoR's and 2ndary responses. Though I really have no business being all the way out in Indiana (i.e. no ties whatsoever) and that must have been apparent.

This is discouraging me from sending in 2ndaries to other schools where I have little ties as well.

Same. Rejected OOS. 31Q 3.6/3.6, non-traditional applicant w/ graduate degree, FYI. IU can bite me (j/k....mostly). Best of luck to those still standing.

Seems like they send out rejection letters every Mon. We somehow made it through the very initial screen, but on 2nd look, we just aren't good enough.

Though I'm not surprised, a rejection letter this early is rather discouraging. My Stats, as many will probably wonder. ~3.7 cGPA, ~3.5 sGPA, 33R.

rejected...3.5/32. Damn this school is pretty hostile to OOS without ties to Indiana...hopefully this isn't how other state schools are...

When life hands you lemons, find someone who life handed them vodka and have a party. Just got the big, fat rejection lemon here too. Rejection party anyone?

Haha. If I wasn't at work right now... I'd get so wasted. Not really... there are schools that I am a lot more invested in and would be crushed if I got rejected THIS early.

I feel there must be an official "rejection" thread... though I'm not really in the mood to go search it out right now.

Hi...joining the rejection party..4.0 34R and OOS...at least we didn't have to waste money or time on a secondary :/

Seriously. IU deserves props for that (if nothing else). That should be the norm.

While I agree with you, I also think that there are cases in which some applicants are only so-so until they write a really kick-ass 2ndary response. I feel we miss out on be able to sell ourselves through a response and LoR's.

Totally got rejected. Really unfortunate too, I would have qualified for an automatic interview if I was in-state. Which I was until a year ago.
