Officially, they start after 5/15. I've posted before that any appeals granted earlier are the result of luck or having connections. Sounds like you were lucky. That does NOT mean that "they started granting appeals."

second, this call was after the second look day. so now what do i do zipmedic?

also they never sent me any information regarding the chicago track? did everyone else on the chicago track receive information for next year in the mail or at the second look day? if so where do i get this information?

No one has gotten anything. I've addressed this issue already - read the thread and just wait, man. ehjay posted the orientation dates above; that's all there is at the moment and it hasn't been sent to anyone yet.

finally, zipmedic, when can we expect the latest student to student guide if it hasnt already been made.

When our class gets around to writing it. We're finishing finals now, so it's a low priority. I'll leave it to ehjay to post ETA's. Welcome to Chicago.
 
Ok, so my status hasn't changed from decision pending since I interviewed a month ago. I also haven't received any word from UIC about being on hold. Do you guys think that means I still haven't been reviewed, or am I on a post-interview hold?
 
I know I'm beating this to pieces but approximately how many petitions do you suspect will be granted this year? I know in previous years' threads it was said that about 1/3 to 1/2 of all petitions were granted; does that still sound about right? Do the vast majority of petitions get granted after May 15th? Lastly, do most petitions get granted closer to May 15th and wean off into June and July? Just trying to start roommate/apartment searching and want to have a better idea.
 
Wow, you read 1/3-1/2 were granted? That's good news to hear and I hope it's true 🙂
 
It varies year to year; it's entirely dependent on three things - (1) how big do they want to let the Chicago class get, (2) how many people withdraw their acceptance by/after May 15th, and (3) luck.

Quick question Zip. have people off waitlist ever gotten chicago track, or is it pretty much reserved for those that petition campus change who were accepted before.

Good question. I want to say that petitions (students who were admitted before waitlist applicants) are dealt with first, but they always say it's based on circumstances, not chronological order. I'll try to get a more definite answer for you.

I feel dumb asking this, but any UPR track people get a brochure about SSR?

You'd think they would give some kind of update, even if general, about where we and they are in the process.

1. The neighborhood is just fine. As with any urban center, do the wrong things and you're making yourself a potential victim.

2. The clinical experience is far from "observational". It's what you make it. If you have a craptastic attitude or seem cocky, your preceptor will make you sit in the back of the room and watch. If you're confident, respectful, and eager to learn, the vast majority of them let you see patients on your own, take histories, and believe you when you present to them. And this all starts Sept/Oct of your M1 year.

3. The facilities are old. Big deal. They more than get the job done. If this is a sticking point for you, don't come here. In the end, each person needs to go to medical school where they feel most comfortable and most like they can succeed. Fancy new labs or a "better match list" are horrible reasons to select a school.

4. The OOS tuition is indeed high -- for some, insurmountably so. The school knows that. It's a state school looking to recruit and train students from the state. They could be like some other state schools and just not accept OOS'ers. If you'd prefer that, let them know.

I got the "final decision has been made.." message at the end of April and it ended up being a rejection.

I called the adcom asking about my application and they said my 30mcat/3.9 GPA were fine but that because I interviewed in April most of the spots were already taken by then.

I proceeded to ask about my upcoming gap year and the things I should do to perhaps increase my chances...and she said if "this is what really want to do should just reapply early this upcoming cycle and not do the gap year."

So I know most reapplicants use the gap year to get more clinical experience/retake MCAT/take graduate courses to boost GPA but this person is telling me to just not take the gap and reapply.

I can hardly make significant changes w/ my application if I apply this time around so I don't know what to do. Thoughts? Suggestions?
 
1. If you're reapplying, it's a gap year.
2. Your stats do sound fine. April was WAY late for an interview -- I posted awhile back about how April interviews are almost exclusively for the waitlist. When did you apply?

Wow, they up and decided to grant my petition for a site change to the Chicago track! Looks like my wife gets to keep her job (more like career) and we will be staying here for the next 4 years. anyone else hear?
 
I always thought a gap year meant an entire year off of not applying and doing something to improve the application. If I do anything during this year and also reapply, I won't be able to put anything new on the application.

I returned my supplement on 09/16/2008 so I didn't think it was too late but perhaps so. I received mail for an interview sometime around January but they had no spots until April.

Also, I'm disconcerted that even though I did not get in, I did not even get wait listed so it leads me to believe there was something more than just being late with my application that led me not to get a spot.

A gap year is a year you're not in school while you apply.

September is WAY late to get complete. Many many people were complete in July.

Yep, that's the risk you take. You can make an appointment to meet with an advisor to go over your application and see if there are any other weak spots you can work on.
 
Thanks Zip. I guess the most pressing question I have at hand is whether or not I should apply to this cycle...again my application would not be changed significantly, but I really need to make a decision soon seeing that June is just around the corner for AMCAS submission.

I got an email that asked me to call them. On the phone they asked me if I still wanted the site change, I said yes, and now they are going to change the site placement.

If you're looking for someone to tell you "Apply early and you'll get in," it's not going to happen - here or at any other accredited school. Meet with a counselor and see if there are any other weaknesses in your application.

All right, I've scheduled an appointment. Hopefully it'll shed some light on my next step.

yes but this email was slightly different from the first one i got.

anyone else preparing to reapply? i'm only applying to UIC and one other school this time vs 20+ schools. UIC was my only interview and when I spoke with a counselor she persuaded me to just apply early this time.

i'm hoping that i wont have to go through the application process again, but since they won't be giving us a final decision until June 1st, i'm not taking any chances and will be clicking "submit amcas" again, something i wish i didn't have to do.

i feel like my life has been pending since this "decision pending" status, but now is the time to prepare for the worst, while I hope for the best.
 
From what I gather, maybe about 5 or so petitions have already been granted? Last year's thread said about 25-30 spots opened up in Chicago, so they're already well into handing out Chicago seats. I'm getting nervous now as I hope this uncertainty doesn't drag into late summer. Being in Chicago would make my life significantly easier and I just can't convey this enough to adcom. I have spoken. Now I hope they listen.

I totally know how you feel. I feel like I've just been floating through life with no apparent direction the past few months. I try to be proactive, but there's only so much you can do when you don't know what you're going to be doing in the fall.

Don't apply to only two schools. I applied to only six schools, got 3 interviews and I am waitlisted at two (UIC WTF?, University of Chicago). And my stats are 3.99/36. If I applied to 15 schools, I would probably be in somewhere by now.

This is just bitterness talking, but I am pissed at UIC. Two of my friends (non-URM) got in with 24 and 27 and we all were complete around the same time in September. And here I am, the idiot still without an acceptance.

It can't be the numbers or the lateness alone dude. I have a 3.7/30 from UIC (I'm assuming you goto UIC also considering your forum name) and submitted my secondary on 10/22. I got an interview invite on 12/19, interviewed on 2/16, and was accepted last month. So, considering I have worse numbers from the same school as well as a much later application altogether, it cannot be THOSE factors.

What else can you say about your application? LOR's, EC's... You can PM me if you don't want to discuss your application on the thread.

I interviewed MSTP in October. 3 panels of two people. Nothing but talking about my research standard interview. My problem was less than a year of research experience (sub par for MSTP), but I hoped for MD-only acceptance. MSTP people told me I still have a decent chance of getting in if people drop out, but they are not making any promises. I decided not to go to MD OPTIONAL interview and it was probably a big mistake on my part. So, yeah interviews count for a lot, especially if you don't show for them. Won't make the same mistake this cycle though.
 
unfortunately i'm still riding the "decision pending" boat....but honestly, after watching the sox game tonight and relaxing with friends and family....any decision could make my day.

was there a separate email sent out to those that received "no decision made" today?

I received the typical email from mrs. Linda S.... anyone else?

I guessing either rejection, postbacc....but maybe a conditional admit/admit.

All admissions are essentially conditional admissions. Your offer of admission is contingent upon you completing your bachelor's degree, completing all required pre-requisite courses, not receiving a grade in any course lower than C (C- is lower than a C), and showing up on the first day of orientation to claim your place in the Class of 2013.

Some people may be admitted with special conditions beyond that, but they are few and far between.

This means nothing lower than a C in any classes AFTER you got your acceptance correct?
 
how do we find out if we've been accepted off the waitlist? is it still the same status page?
 
I apologize if this has been asked already, but does UIC allow students who are appealing location assignments to hold on to another acceptance past May 15th? Basically I would prefer the Chicago campus to the other school I am holding a spot at, but not the Urbana-Peoria track.

That's not a UIC rule, it's an AMCAS/AAMC rule. ...and no, you can't.
