Did people who appealed hear back from the admissions office? They always said that you will find out after May 15th..

Withdrew. One more spot open in Chicago. Good luck!! 👍

i was offered a spot in the post bacc program. ill see all of you in 2010. good luck to those still waiting. if anyone else gets into the post bacc program, message me and we can chat.

I thought you were on the wait list.

How did they offer it to you? Email or phone call? Did they say u were officially out of the running for MD? did your status change on the website?

first, i was never waitlisted.

last thursday my status changed to final decision made.
today i received a large packet, I knew it was either an acceptance/postbacc. turned out to be post bacc (still super happy and grateful).

i get to go to school for another year and then jump right in for 2010. woohoo!

i really hope that things go well for the rest of you. it is such a huge relief to have a decision made after seven months of decision pending.

no more AMCAS. woot. no more interviews. woot. i can only hope these feelings are experienced for you all....it is unreal.

again, if anyone on here gets into the postbacc....message me. i'd love to talk.

Were you decision pending from Interview ---> last thursday then?

You don't have to reapply once you finish your postbacc?

yes i was decision pending from december until last thursday. decisions will come. just have to wait. its no fun but its part of the game.

congrats skilladoc! you truly had a long wait and I can only imagine how relieved/happy you must be.

as for the rest of us, i'm guessing the committee has not met since may 15 yet. but when they do, i hope we either get accepted or waitlisted (first quartile hopefully). everything should be clearer in about 2-3 weeks.

impatience is a really bad trait to have in this process. if anything, i've grown to be more patient this year.

neone know if they will start granting it?

Also do people on the waitlist get first dibs to chicago or do the people who are actually on the other campuses get in?

I called the Urbana admissions office today to see what my chances were of staying in Urbana rather than moving to Peoria for M2 and beyond. They said that Urbana is one of the hardest tracks to stay on....anyone else get this information? Seemed a little weird to me.

it's because they only have ~25 students and almost all of them are MD/PhDs in the Medical Scholars Program - I was told that I still have a chance to apply to MSP this summer (to start after first year), which I'm planning on doing, but if I don't get it, I'm Peoria bound as well!

Hey guys,
What do you have to do to hold to a place at UIC after May 15th. I mean what is the next process... I already withdraw from other schools to go to UIC but do i get to fill out any paperworks ? I just don't wanna lose my place in the class just because i missed some important deadlines. Thanks

You already sent your $100 deposit and acceptance form, right? There's nothing else to do. 🙂

Hey Zip - do you know if the committee has begun granting petitions this week? Reason I'm asking is that I would like to begin apt hunting, and it would really help me to know what campus I will be at next year.

Just gotta wait, dude.

so i called today- they said the adcom met today and we should hear something by june 1.

i think we should expect status changes sooner than june 1st right?

usually when they have a meeting, status changes occur within the next couple of days.

yep. they said same status change regardless of decision. i almost don't care anymore.

Key word there is "almost" right? 🙂 Good luck!
yup... i'd only go if i got chicago campus and i don't really think that will happen unless my dad pulls some strings

Quick question. For those of us who have been on this decision pending for months now... does anyone know a break down of how many people immediately get offered a spot, how many are put on the wait list, and how many get outright rejected. Seeing as we all get a status change coming up, im just curious if our decision pending is pretty much 'theyve taken so long to decide on us its pretty much a moot point and we're SOL' or 'they just dont know how the class is shaping up, so if there are seats still available we'll get em all...(extremely hopeful guess)'

I guess im hoping for a % breakdown, or an estimate if anyone has any ideas or knows about past histories... or if someone wants to call them... (sorry zipmed i know thats a pet peve... and i have no idea if thats spelled correctly)

It's not a pet peeve. It's obnoxious to keep calling the office with questions that all essentially boil down to "So did I get in yet?" Just. Be. Patient.

I saw that before the edit. The answer is "trying."

The office does its best to manage thousands of applications, updates, letters of interest, letters of intent, etc., organized and easily referenced while processing interviewees and accepted applicants. ...all while trying to be nice to people on the phone who all call with the same question (see post above).

If you want to get upset, blame the fact that there are too many applicants for too few spots; don't blame the school.

I apologize in advance, as this will sound harsh, but it's not intended to be an attack on anyone: it's not the office's fault that a given applicant didn't get their application in early enough, had to reschedule their interview, or didn't have the stats to get them placed in the top choice applicant pool. Nor is it their fault that the Chicago campus only has so many spots. The staff works tirelessly and tries to accommodate as many people as they possibly can. Sometimes we just don't get what we want.

Well said. I didn't see the post that Zipmed is replying to, but if you have to blame something, blame the system. So long as the system is for making profit rather than for serving people, you shouldn't be surprised that medical schools only have a relatively small number of seats. Of course it makes sense to admit more people so more doctors can serve, but in this system even premeds have argued that salaries would decrease with more doctors. So don't put blame on UIC, they are merely a part of the system.

I didn't say anything specifically negative about UIC. What I did say is that holding 50 times more applicants on a wait list than there are prospective spots is unreasonable.

Many schools do this, I am on four wait lists myself where this is the case, and it is a problem. I believe that it should be possible to reject many more applicants much sooner in the process.

Remember, the new cycle begins in 10 days, and that means thousands more dollars in application fees. Earlier rather than later notification of rejection is important.

The system is the system. The school has every right to maintain a waitlist of whatever size they choose in order to make sure each year's class fills.

Never look at it from the applicant perspective, because applicants didn't make the policies; always look at it from the schools perspective. The end goal for each school is to "maximize the number of seats occupied for each incoming class", not to "decide on applicants as early as possible". So long as that is the case, it is far more advantageous to keep a long waitlist than not. Think of the waitlist as a "free buffer" against unexpected changes. Why would anyone ever opt for less "free buffer" unless they absolutely needed to?

If you really dislike waitlists, become a dean and make whatever changes you want to your school. The irony is, however, that once you are a dean you will care more about keeping your job by not running your school into the red. Thus you will want to maximize the number of seats occupied in your school.

Zipmedic, you seem to have a habit of excusing UIC's faults by blaming them on issues which are common to all medical schools, and which many schools have addressed in a more effective way.

For example, all medical schools have thousands of applicants, yet UIC is the only one which never acknowledged receiving my update letters. No, they weren't excessive, they were just my grades from last fall and this spring. I still have no idea if UIC ever got them.

If UIC insists on being organized as one school with 4 separate campuses, they might want to give people the option of only applying to specific campuses, like Miami (and others) do. If they won't or can't do that, they should certainly streamline the application process by allowing for online secondary applications and status notifications, like many or most schools, and moving the campus selection process online as well.

UIC has high tuition for a state school, especially with the huge extra costs for M2 and M3 summers. It's not an issue of amortization or "insuring the hell out of" clinical students, as you stated earlier. Over four years, UIC seems to be more expensive than most state schools. In all fairness, I doubt this is UIC's fault; it's more likely an Illinois issue as SIU has the same structure and similar costs.

I'm very impressed with UIC as a school, and no doubt you are too since you chose to go there and become involved in the admissions process. I don't see why you need to be so partisan rather than acknowledge that UIC has its faults, and that some of the frustration expressed in this thread is legitimate criticism.

That's strange because I sent UIC an updated transcript as well and they were happy to acknowledge receiving it.

I'm glad they're not too swamped to respond to some people. 🙂

Just to clarify, I think you two are talking about different things. I got the impression that Keyzer was complaining that they never sent a replay or what not.

I believe Kopiolli(sp) was saying that they actually called the office and they were happy to say they got it.

Two different situations. The UIC office, in my experience, is very helpful, so it doesn't surprise me that they were "more than happy" to let you know they got your stuff. That being said, they don't typically send a reply letting you know they got your update, which is what I believe Keyzer was saying.

Not trying to get involved in this debate as I have no complaints, but the misunderstanding was bothering me, lol

I sort of agree with zipmedic's idea that one should keep phone calls to a minimum. Individually I've found the office staff to be very helpful, they're just not too communicative, at least by email.

Zipmedic, you seem to have a habit of excusing UIC's faults by blaming them on issues which are common to all medical schools, and which many schools have addressed in a more effective way.

Because I don't attend "all medical schools". I attend this one.

If they won't or can't do that, they should certainly streamline the application process by allowing for online secondary applications and status notifications, like many or most schools, and moving the campus selection process online as well.

Then provide the funding or propose a source for said funding to do so.

It's not an issue of amortization or "insuring the hell out of" clinical students, as you stated earlier.

You seem to say this with some authority. Cite your source.

I don't see why you need to be so partisan rather than acknowledge that UIC has its faults, and that some of the frustration expressed in this thread is legitimate criticism.

I've never said UIC is without fault. That said, complaining on an interweb forum about things the office staff can't and will never be able to control is futile. You want it changed, talk to the Dean (or as an earlier poster suggested, become the Dean). In the end, you're arguing for more applicant convenience, which does not necessarily mean more staff convenience. Remember, you want to come to this school (or to at least have the option of doing so); we aren't chasing applicants, so until you're admitted, take it or leave it.

For those accepted, remember the immunization form is due on June 15th. That can be found here.

Does anyone know when the first day of school is? From looking at the M1 calendar from last year, I see that first year students had a week long orientation that took place the week before the rest of the university started classes. That would lead me to believe that day 1 is August 17th, but I haven't seen that in writing anywhere on the school website.

I'm concerned because my housing contract does not go into effect until August 23rd, thereby paving the way for my new video documentary: A Week in the Life of a Homeless Medical Student.

I'll start a blog as well.

Don't forget; you need titers verifying immunity, not just dates of immunization. Additionally, some people may not be able to meet the June 15th deadline (i.e., just started the Hep B series, etc.). If so, submit whatever you can and keep in contact with the admissions office. They'll work with you if you need a reasonable accommodation.

The first day of classes will be August 17th. Enjoy Biochemistry.

I got a status change today. Did anyone else? It said a final decision has been made. I recall from last years thread that those who were waitlisted had their status change to something like "applicant waitlisted." I could be wrong though. I'm just praying I get a CBC email within the next few days.

I did too. THANK GOD because I was so sick of waiting. Either way, at least I know.
