So...the final pool people are screwed? They made it sound like they would re-review us in Feb. Sigh...off to the Caribbean I go!

my interview for this school is this monday. Do any of you who interviewed have any advice?

Just relax and enjoy yourself. Some students got an interviewer that asked some ethical questions, but apparently it's just this ONE guy that does this out of all the interviewers there. And according to some that got him, the ethical questions weren't bad and he didn't grill you about it. Just presented you with a scenario to see how you'd respond. I didn't get that guy so I just talked about all the typical stuff -- my background, interests, and why medicine. It's a blind interview (2 interviewers) so they just really want to get to know you as a person and evaluate your character. So smile, be friendly and you'll do fine.

Check out the Interview Feedback page. Good luck.

I thought the feedback helped, but overstressed the importance of prepping for ethical scenarios. I had none and most of those I interviewed with had none.

I had a lot of ethical questions.

Did you get a guy with an accent?

Sorry though Food. =/ It really is just luck of the draw.

No, I had a lady with an accent though. I didn't mind the ethics questions. I thought I did a good job answering them, but I guess it wasn't good enough 🙁. You guys are tough to beat!

Well now we know what to do, if you get interviewers with accents, watch the hell out.

One of my interviewers had accent and he asked a couple ethical questions, but I don't understand why it's bad to get ethical questions, they're really easy to answer. I'd much rather have that than a billion follow-up questions designed to (over)analyze every thing you did.

Hey guys

I am a member of the 2013 class, i ll be checking this post more often to try to answer any questions you guys have, if you have a more direct question just pm me. everything my classmate is pretty accurate. regarding the guy who said he was going to the caribean cuz he was in final pool, dont freakout i know ppl who was in final pool and still made it in.

For people who interviewed on Oct 19th and after, does it say under review with the committee on your status page? Just wondering bc mine still says interview complete.

I just wanted to respond publically to a couple of questions I have received.

Yes there is on campus housing and the building is completely reserved for med students (so no sharing an apt with a bunch of freshmen undergrads), I believe about half a dozen med students live there now
(Obviously that will go up each year until we have a full class).

I don't know how much more (past construction I mentioned previously) the med complex is going to be expanded within the next few years but I think it's safe to say that if they haven't broken ground on the building yet it won't be completed within your first two years (remember your 3rd and 4th years are primarily going to be at a hospital) so it probably won't effect med classes much.

Also, I want to reiterate what I and chemolupusMD said. If you are in the final pool list you are far from screwed and I am sure the committee will look at your application again. Also if you are on the alternate wait list you have a good chance of getting off of it since (as I mentioned previously) FIU doesn't accept more people than they have seats for. How fast will you get off? I don't know. It all depends on the people who are currently accepted. If every single person that has been accepted loves FIU and decided to come here then no one on the waitlist would get off. Obviously that has a low likelihood of happening at any school, as most students apply broadly and many may decide to go elsewhere for whatever reasons. Just try to relax (I know that's easier said than done, especially if all you want to do is get accepted). Last year people did get off the final pool list which means FIU ran thru (most if not all of the alternate-list). I don't know if that will happen again this year but if it did it would mean that an alternate-waitlist was a very high chance of getting accepted and a final pool still had a semi-decent chance of getting in later in the year. This is as best as I can explain the process, I'm not on the admissions committee and med schools are notoriously secretive and fickle, so things could change. Hopefully all of you reading this will get into the school you want and eventually be successful docs. Later (future) class of 2014, can't wait to meet you guys in a few months and again please feel free to message me anytime you want

I'm off the alternate list and officially ACCEPTED!!! I loved this school... everyone I met was incredibly nice and enthusiastic, community support, beautiful campus...

OOS tuition is a killer, though!

Grats man, did they email you?

Yep, email at 6pm EST. It went into my spam folder, even though none of their previous emails have!

(I am a chick, btw 😉 )

I love your handle name. You are definitely my type of classmate. Congrats.

Blue, you're an "alternate," right? I think they gave the first group of acceptees 3 weeks to confirm their seat, and 3 weeks from Oct 15 was yesterday. So I bet you'll hear soon, as ppl with multiple acceptances decide not to submit the non-refendable $200 seat deposit.

Yeah, I'm an alternate. But should I not have heard yesterday? I wonder if this list is ranked...

I have an accent.. does that mean if I get an interviewer with an accent, we will cancel each other out?!

S and L, how much time are you given to make the deposit?

It might be ranked, but I also interviewed before you.

I was given 2 weeks to accept.

Yeah, I think I'm in the next batch to receive the full acceptance, hopefully. How do you know when I interviewed?

Nevermind, I had you confused w/ someone else. I thought you interviewed Oct 5.

For those of you who have been accepted/wait-listed here, how long after your status changed to "admissions committee review completed" on the status website were you notified of the decision? And did you get an e-mail or a call or..?

You should get it about a few days from now, and I got an email.

I got mine after I think a little less than 2 weeks. I got both a call and an e-mail, with the e-mail coming first.

I just got the "Accepted" email so I'm on the Alternate/Accepted list ! Guess I'll wait for the full thing to celebrate but it's good news !

Oh man, I interviewed 10/19. I wonder if my group will be evaluated soon. How often does the adcom meet, anyone know?

I heard like once a week or something, I'm not really sure.

I find it kinda funny how accepted was in quotes, lol. So I'm accepted in theory?

I kinda feel like a booty call.

-interviewed 10/16; accept/alternate list

Has anyone been "accepted for real" since 11/6/09? That's the 3 week mark from the first acceptance wave on 10/15. It seems like all recent acceptances are for the alternate list, one would think some "acceptees" (from the 10/15 wave) didn't pay the deposit thus freeing up some spots??

Also those accepted to the alt list, do you have to pay the deposit?

Thanks

Apparently, the next wave of acceptances from the alternate list should be going out around 11/19. The alt list people don't have to pay any deposit.

$80,000 for Out of State tuition!!!!!???? Have they lost their minds?

Thanks for the info. Admissions told me to expect news around month's end... the wait is endless 🙁🙁🙁

No it's $50,000 for OOS tuition.
I know they gave out a bunch of scholarships to the 2013 class, so hopefully the same applies for da 2014ers in spite of the recession..
