does anyone know if OHSU is pass/fail? and if there is PBL? i looked everywhere on the website and couldn't find it...

They're Fail/Pass/Near Honors/Honors. I know they emphasize early clinical experience but don't know about "PBL."

and if there is PBL? i looked everywhere on the website and couldn't find it...

We don't really have PBL, so to speak...

We do have small groups a few times each week, and some of those sessions are PBL sessions...but most are labs, paper discussions, problem-solving sessions, moral discussions, etc...

How do you submit the secondary? I certified it but there is no submit button.

Once you're on the main menu page, there is a "Check Your Application" big blue button underneath step 8...

Good luck everybody! 👍

they took forever with this secondary but i must say, it's one of the nicest (if not THE nicest) layouts of any of the 30+ online secondaries i completed

they are quick to complete you at least! it took me only 1 day after submission to be marked complete. After dealing with penn state this is a nice change lol

Really quick - about 24 hours for me too. 👍 Now if only we could get UCSF to do this...

Sorry, I tried looking for the answer. It seems like OHSU doesn't accept california residents?

Has everyone given up on Oregon? This is sure a quite thread. I take it there have been no interview invites yet??

None that i've seen on SDN. I haven't given up hope though. I'm still holding out for my two schools on the west coast.

what did everyone do for the optional diversity questions? im probably gonna leave it out even though i have answers to the questions and because i have answers to the questions (just dont feel like writing more essays and i have used most of it to answer the actual diversity essay).. do you guys think it matters much for admission? what did you guys decide?

The "diversity" question (which was required) or the "adversity" question (which was optional)?
For the diversity question, I talked about my experience. For the adversity question, I talked about my history.

oh i meant the "adversity" one that is optional.. thanks =)

I didn't answer the adversity questions. I felt like they were trying to identify minorities or otherwise really disadvantaged applicants, and growing up in a middle-class asian family, any of the answers I could've formulated seemed kind of ridiculous.

Hey, does anyone know about OHSU's math requirement and whether they accept AP Calculus towards the "one mathematics course"? (It shows up on my university transcript as "AP Credit: transfer credit, 0 university credit, Calc I")

I took 2 years of AP Calculus in HS - both AB and BC - and it seems ridiculous that I would have to do it again.

Thanks for your help!

did anyone else not notice that the deadline for submitting the secondary was only 5 days after receiving??? I got mine on the 18th and the deadline was the 23rd... totally missed that.

so heads up people: when you get the secondary, fill it out fast! don't be a procrastinator like me.

i'm going to call the office tomorrow to see if i can still submit it. i shouldn't have taken so long to write those essays...

whoops never mind, totally read that wrong. wow this whole application process has me on edge...
the deadline is officially month after receiving.
false alarm.
feeling pretty stupid. but also very very relieved...submitting it now.
i hate applications.
that is all.

When doing the LOR section on the secondary, for those who have premed committees, did you just put down your committee letter writer and that was it?

For parents' education level, does an Associate's Degree count as college graduate?

Thanks!

Alright, If all of my LOR have been received, does that mean I'm complete? Also, do you think I can email them to update them about my grades?

They have a complete message on the secondary homepage that shows up when you're complete and processed. I think they've generally been pretty quick about this, I had this status 2 days after submitting the secondary with everything else being in before then. If it takes a while (maybe a week/2 weeks), it might be worth contacting them about it.
In terms of the grades, why not send them an email? It may not matter, but if it does and that's information they want, I'd imagine they'll want an official transcript so asking earlier will likely be beneficial.

Goducks, theres no need to e-mail them about your grades. I e-mailed Lori Toner about this exact situation earlier and she said that they only accept grades from amcas. This will be the only gpa they use to make a decision on your interview status and acceptance. If you are accepted they then will ask for a transcript of your most recent grades. Hope that helps!

Thanks! That's sort of unfortunate but good to know that I don't need to pursue it any more than I already have. Good luck!

got my secondary yesterday and turned it in around midnight. hope to get complete on this thing soon!

According to MSAR, OHSU does indeed require calculus. But the website says only one math class is required and does not mention calc. Be very careful with making your decision. Search the threads because I have seen this addressed before or get your answer directly from OHSU.

Oh, Oregon, why, oh why, do you toy with the precarious sanity of the medical school applicant? Please start inviting people for interviews. 😍

The first essay on evaluating success has me totally confused since its 4000 characters. What kind of success are they talking about? Can we say something basically like what kind of physician we want to be, and if we acheive that then we know we succeeded or what? Anybody have any suggestions. please help

It sounds like a question that allows for different approaches, so I think your idea is as good as any. Maybe outline a few qualities/skills/traits that you think are important for a doctor to have, and integrate what you think will be required of you in medical school in order to develop/refine those features. Good luck!

So in the FAQ, it says that one preference is given to out of state residences with a gpa greater than 3.65, and an mcat greater than 32.

I am an oos resident and I have a 3.64 and 30 mcat.
Should I even bother applying?

Everybody's situation is different, but I have a friend who was accepted last year OOS with lower stats - GPA and MCAT. She had some pretty awesome EC's to make up for it. If you have the $100 to spare, I say go for it.

Kinda tricky too. Its weird because if you said you are disadvantaged you would have indicated and written something in your AMCAS, so why are asking you to write more stuff down? I don't feel like just repeating anything, but then I do not know what to do.

Does anyone know where the extra questions are for the MD/MPH program are?

this is my dilemma as well. i don't understand why they ask you to talk 4000 characters about your early education, socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity factors and family in the diversity essay and then ask you to rate your adversity in these areas and...talk about it again? it feels weird to put no response when i spent a good chunk of my diversity essay talking about a lot of these things, but to explain my choices would just be a lot of repeating myself. 😕

why are they taking forever to complete me?!! i sent my letters two weeks ago!! makes me think they got lost somehow 😕

nah don't worry about it. mine have taken a while too.

So I submitted my secondary and the online application deleted all of my indentations for my essays. Now each essay is one giant paragraph! Anyone else have this problem? I talked to admissions and they said that this will happen for everyone's essays. I'm just making sure that this is true.

I'm wondering if it's even worth it at this point to submit this secondary... Still haven't written the essays. They're just so long it's hard to motivate myself to do it!

Amen brother. That diversity essay is my Everest. On the bright side, there will probably be less competition this year because of all the people like us who don't want to do another one this late in the game.

No one is having the paragraph problem with their essays after submission?

Anybody else having a hard time finding contact information for their admissions office? I can't find a phone number anywhere and I've spent the last 30 minutes searching their website. Am I just dumb or something?

On my status page, it says my LORs haven't been received, even though they were mailed about two weeks ago. And it says that my application has been processed, so I don't know why they haven't received them. My deadline is 10/15, so I'm starting to freak out.

The deadline should only be applied to the date for which you submit and pay for for the secondary.

If they expect the letters in by the same date, they should be postmarked by that time.

I don't think they would consider your app late for the time it takes to mail the letters and the time they take to process them. There is really nothing you can do about that.

I am in the same situation and I would not worry about it as long as you submitted and paid before the deadline and the letters were sent a week before the deadline... Hard to relax I know, but try your best
