Congrats on getting the bump-up! Were you shooting for the IHS track? I know I'm attending USUHS under the NIAID track, and am fairly certain the other NIAID person is as well. I have no idea about the two IHS people that were accepted though. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Interesting, I was only interested in the NIAID tract. Maybe this adds more fuel to the switching list fire.

Interviewed on the last day...FINALLY waitlisted. At least the 3/11 interviewees are fresher in the committee members' minds.

So are people moving in to the area already? I was just wondering, because it sounds like a lot of people intend to move in June, and then head off to COT etc. But doesn't than mean that you'll be paying July rent with nobody in the house? It seems smarter to me to try to get a lease starting August so you dont burn a months rent...

Also, it seems like a lot of MS1s live in houses together - 4 br apts etc. I live in Philly now, which I think is only a little cheaper than DC. In my lab job I make very little money - around $1600/mo after taxes, but I still am able to live in a 1 br. And now if I commission I'll be making 3 times as much - it seems like if you wanted to, you could def live in a 1 br in DC/MD. Unless those places are 3 times as expensive as Philly, which I dont think they are right? I guess it might be a little different for me since I have no dependents.

So you know, I'm sure USUHS students are the s**t and everything, but are people feeling forced in to 4 br apts, or choosing to? Cause I'm 24, and I think I've paid my dues in terms of living in filth with 3 other guys and eating ramen 😀

haha - yep. I'll sign a lease starting Aug. 1 for a $1,575 704 sq. ft. 1 BR at Rosedale Park, a very short walk from campus. 👍

You already found it?? That sounds really sweet. And they're willing to wait till Aug. 1? Thats what I need. But I feel like most people who are advertising apts now want to lease in June or July at the latest...

Most places project openings ~ 60 days in advance, so now is the time to start calling. Even if nothing is open for late July or early August yet, then try back next week, and the next. More current tenants will be notifying the leasing office that they will be moving out, so they can project more openings in our time-frame.

For the unit I've reserved, the current tenants won't move out until June, then they'll clean it, and my move-in will be Aug. 1. I'll have a relative in Bethesda inspect it before we get there... 🙂

Check out this guys house. He's a USUHS student, and I'll be living in his house next year. Rent starts on Aug 1st.

They chose to. I chose to NOT do that, and I live in downtown Bethesda with one roommate. We live in one of the more expensive 2br apartments because it's newly renovated, and I've never gone over my BAH. I do know people who live in studios in downtown Bethesda too, who don't go over their BAH. It's totally up to you, we definitely get the money to do whichever you wish.
Some apartments give deals to military members, like one month free rent. We starting leasing in the middle July, but didn't start paying rent until August. Others have discounted apartments, or parking, and most waive the application fee. If they give you trouble about not having a military id yet, get in touch with Rebecca Patterson - you can get a letter telling them that you will be employed for the next several years, what your wage is, and that you'll be a student at usuhs. They just want reassurance that you can pay the rent.

For anyone who knows:

I plan on driving from California to OBLC (Texas) and then to USUHS afterwards. Do I need to contact somebody if I plan on driving? Like tell them that I am driving as opposed to flying?

Also if I wanted to set up a partial DITY, do I have to wait for OBLC orders?
Anyone get those orders yet?

Thanks in advance!

Have any Air Force people received orders for COT yet? Also, I keep seeing posts about army people buying online and getting stuff early.. have any AF done that yet as well? I'd like to look into how much I will be expecting to spend on uniform stuff (i know, somewhere around $1500... I'd just like a better idea) and would like to at least get a pair of boots soon so I can start breaking them in...

I called Mr. Kush at AFPC yesterday, and he told me they are still waiting on SECDEF approval for the AF students. He said to expect orders by the end of May. One major expense that you don't have to worry about is the AF mess dress. The COT website doesn't mention it, and my sponsor says we won't need it until October for an inspection. But I'm not sure if there is a grad banquet at the end of COT where you could wear it. If so, you should still have the option of wearing the semi-formal (service dress with white dress shirt and no hat). Can any COT graduates provide any more info on this?

On another note, my sponsor told me that we will have about a week between reporting, orientation, and class start to find housing. For my family, it sounds like this is the best option. My wife and I will probably be leaving the kids with my family in MI while we get settled in. Someone previously mentioned that most landlords don't want hold an empty place for 2 months, and that's especially true for houses. I'll get serious about finding a house while I'm at COT. Summer is PCS season, and with all the military and gov't jobs in the area, there are sure to be many more houses opening up in July.

Ok-- thanks. When do I get a sponsor? I just got my phone call wednesday, so I haven't even gotten paperwork yet. I just like to start planning🙂

In the Army, will we ever go on long runs in our boots? I went running a couple miles today in them, and it definitely makes it a little harder. If so I want to train for it!

Congrats to all who got in! I'm really hoping for a spot, but I interviewed late so I don't know what my chances are ("The waitlist is ranked according to the date of your interview, your overall competitiveness, and your current military status"). Just out of curiosity, is there any way to see how many waitlist candidates the 2013 class is made of? I know that the waitlist at USUHS moves more than most schools, but I've been really nervous since 05/15 approaches.
P.S. I wonder which is more important in deciding on waitlist candidates - interview date, competitiveness, or military status?

Anyone know how many students are accepted into each service? I saw it on the USUHS web site, but I can't find it now.
Thanks!

wiki says: 63 Army students, 51 Air Force students, 51 Navy students, and 2 Public Health Service students

(though i know that PHS is generally more like 4-6 so i dont know how accurate this is. decent ballpark though)

I think you already have a sponsor, you just need to figure out who that is. You sponsor gets assigned pretty early in the process. Call up admissions and they will tell yoiu who it is.

Ok-- yea, I figured it'd be at least a couple weeks at the earliest since I haven't even received the paper I need to sign yet. I just wasn't sure how far into the process it'd be before I got one.

Thanks🙂

If you just got accepted, then it may be a week or so before they assign a sponsor. They match you up based on service, gender, prior service experience, and some sort of commonality (from the same state or college or whatever).

Ok-- I figured I had some time yet. I just remembered filling out that sponsor form back before my interview.

Now I get to start lookin around for housing. I'm lucky that I live here now, so I'm in no rush, so I'm goin to take advantage of it.🙂
So excited...

Anyone have suggestions for some affordable (within BAH) apartments that are decent? It's quite a search for me online right now.

My wife and I narrowed our search down to Avalon at Grosvernor or Rosedale Parks. Both are good if your priority is being close to campus and/or the metro so you don't have to drive. There's also an Avalon at Rock Springs, but not so close to the metro stop.

We went for Rosedale Parks. I think being within walking distance to campus will trump any other amenity. But there are plenty of options and solutions for every need, so happy hunting! 👍

The Spouses' site has a giant list of apartments/townhouses

The Student Spouses' website has a big list, but it's not really updated.

I'm going to have to decide between USUHS and civ school with HPSP here pretty quick and just had a quick question. I cant remember, how long are we in classes every day at USUHS?

Did anybody else notice that the "going to USUHS AF" poll went down? It was 11 a few days ago and now is 8.

I'm going to have to decide between USUHS and civ school with HPSP here pretty quick and just had a quick question. I cant remember, how long are we in classes every day at USUHS?

The schedule from what I know is 0730-1630

Hey Sliverhorse - You mentioned earlier about missing classes. I have an abstract that I might have to present to northeastern society of plastic surgeons, and if so, I'd need to miss a thursday and fri in October. Is that kind of thing generally permitted or not? I think you mentioned that leave is supposed to be just for family emergencies...

Also, can someone remind me about COT rules? Cause I'd probably need to keep in touch with my lab in July, and work on my laptop. Can we even bring laptops??

You generally don't go beyond 0730-1600 with 1130-1300 for lunch. Towards the beginning of the year, you'll have more days that follow that - now that we're hitting the end of MSI, we have a lot of days that end at 1130 or even earlier.
Toward the beginning of the year, you'll have a one or two days that go until 1600 (4pm), and the rest go until 1400 or 1500 with Friday's more likely to get out at 1130.
Here's the link to our schedule this past year: http://cim.usuhs.mil/oea/ms1.html
Anything that says Dean's Time is time not in class. Unless it says required on the schedule, all lectures are optional. The required classes are the ones with LA (lab) or CO (small groups) in parentheses. CC are clinical correlation lectures and are like any other lecture, optional.

That would be something that you need to discuss with professors and then your company commander. Since it's school related, they're more likely to let you go I would think, but I really don't know. I haven't heard of any of my classmates going to present at conferences. I know there are conferences they want med students to go to, and some they'll pay you to go, but generally they've been over weekends.
It kind of depends on what's going on that week. If it's a test week, you may have to take it early. Since its academic, I would imagine the professors will be okay with you missing class - you'll just have to convince your company commander.

Hey all-- I feel like at some pt I had heard something about limited travel before COT... Is it an issue if I got to europe for a week in june (considering COT isn't til the end of that month?) I don't think it is... But I thought I'd ask..m

Got my unconditional email from Mr. Kush (Air Force Physician Education Branch) last night, filled out all the paperwork today, out-processing from my Air National Guard unit this week, and looking forward to swearing in and getting my orders to COT soon! 👍

Oh yeah, and last day of working as a research assistant = June 11th! 👍👍👍👍👍 🙂

Yeah I was told a few weeks ago it should be very soon...still nothing. I was expecting to hear this week thinking USUHS has an interest in retaining me prior to May 15th in case I have another acceptance and am still waiting for them to approve a waiver...

Could you post what they say when you call on Fri? Thanks!

I'm likely going to withdraw so someone on Navy list will get a spot. I may be shooting myself in the foot for a chance at a residency at Balboa but whatever, I'll deal with it in a few years.

Are you planning on using the last few days to finalize your decision? If not, why not make someone's day before May 15th? 😉
