To my AF peeps that had questions about cost, I went and bought some new uniforms today and spent about $400 on 2 sets of ABUs + cap, PT uniform, 2 blues pants + 2 shirts, and some rank. Also included is tailoring and sewing on of rank. Plus I got the elastic taken out of the ABU pants... it is so uncomfortable! I didn't need boots, tshirts, socks, shoes, or service dress. Given that, you can begin to get an idea of how much you may be spending. Also, if you can, it is beneficial to actually go to clothing supply and try stuff on. The sizes are crazy! (For example, I had to get the smallest size ABU jacket and PT gear. Didn't realize how much the uniforms had changed in the past yr.) Hope that helps and happy shopping! 🙂

I was just wondering....how many spots do people think are going to end up opening after the 15th? Is it where most people wait until AMCAS makes them make a decision or are most of the spots given up earlier?

Any Navy folk looked into uniforms yet? Looks like we have to wait to get our stuff, can't see where to buy it online. If we have to wait to get it at ODS will it still be tailored? Not to sound snobby (snobbish?) but if I'm paying money for clothes I will wear frequently I want it to look/fit right. Also do we do most of our physical training in boots or in running shoes? I have never owned boots for running so anyone have suggestions?

Thanks all

My cousin just finished ODS (for nursing) and said you might as well just wait till you get there.

Our uniforms were tailored in navy boot camp so I imagine the same would be true at ODS. I can't say 100% but it is unlikely that we will do much running in boots at ODS. It takes a while for your body to adjust to running in boots so with a 5 week course they would have a hard time getting us adapted to running in boots. So if at all it I would guess it would only be one or two runs. See ya in a month.

I'd like to know this as well. I'm wondering if it would really take until the 15th for most people to finalize their decisions (lots of waitlist movement after the 15th) or if many have already given up their seat at USU and the waitlist movement pretty much has happened already? :scared:

While some people have decided already, quite a few will wait til the last minute.
There are also people who are into USUHS, but on waiting lists elsewhere and after that date may get offered a spot at another school. May 15th just forces the movement to start. That's why people are getting accepted all the way up to the daysd before classes start

Yeah I was told a few weeks ago it should be very soon...still nothing. I was expecting to hear this week thinking USUHS has an interest in retaining me prior to May 15th in case I have another acceptance and am still waiting for them to approve a waiver...

Could you post what they say when you call on Fri? Thanks!

Will do

Makes sense. Thanks!

Just wait until ODS. During the first week, you'll go over as a company and get fitted for uniforms - they're actually pretty efficient about it. Some parts like the pants, come unhemmed, so yes, they will tailor them there. You'll get one on one time with a person for each piece of your uniform, and they'll make it fit you right. Then, you'll wear the PT uniform until khakis are ready. Then later, you'll go pick up your dress uniforms.

What you should bring to ODS: white undershirsts, underware, white socks for PT, and black for uniforms. Good running shoes, and good sports bras (for the women out there).

You won't wear boots at all at ODS. You'll wear running shoes with PT gear and dress shoes with the uniform. You don't buy BDUs until you get to USUHS

Spoke too soon--just got the phone call. Approved!

Thanks for the info (everyone else too!) Good to know there is no rush for uniforms. I'm real excited!

To my AF peeps...

I scored one last clothing issue m (blues, ABU, PT) from my ANG unit, then walked back into the supply office the same day to out-process.

But... they gave me the desert (tan) boots, not the blue/green looking ones that everyone else wears. I guess if it's alright with AFI 36-2903 (and it's free) then it's alright with me!

Any other National Guard members in this class?

Active Duty. We only get issued uniform items (ABUs and boots) if we deploy. Too late for that now! I did get my clothing allowance a few months ago, which helps.

Hey Guys, I feel like this may have been addressed, but I just can't wrap my head around it:

I'm on the ALT list but I am still interested in getting pulled off it.
Does the service area that I chose matter for the ALT list? Or do they just put you in whatever slot they have open?

Do you think they would select someone on the ALT list that had navy as their number one if a navy slot opened up? Or would they just dip into the list as they see fit. I'm concerned because I had PHS 1, Army 2, AF3 and I see PHS as the least wavering of the options.

Any ideas would be welcomed 👍

have people set up their travel plans to OBLC already? Or do we have to wait for orders?

It is my understanding that when you receive your orders, you will also get a phne number to call to set up your travel. If you are flying, they purchase your ticket from ur permanent address to base.

I could be wrong, but that's what I keep being told...

For Navy ODS, I presume this works the same way? I haven't heard a peep from USUHS about ODS/reporting to school since my unconditional acceptance back in Jan/Feb.
And ODS is quite soon! June 13, yeah? My sister's college graduation is the same day- I imagine I will be missing it? (That is, no exceptions to the reporting date?)

Any other Navy non-priors out there in the same situation, i.e. haven't heard anything about what to do next? I'm ready to fly to Newport, packed bag full of undershirts, sneakers, and socks in hand! But don't know anything about the logistics...

I just heard that a buddy of mine with an Air Force acceptance decided to go to another school, so it looks like somebody will be getting his spot. Don't give up people!

Thanks for the news and hope! I'm on the AF waitlist and I'm hoping it moves like it did last year 🙂

Depends at what time and how far from RI it is. You have to check in by 2000 so if you can make it to the base by 2000 after attending the graduation then you're fine. I don't know how flexible they are with regards to checking in late. See ya in a month.

Yes, this is correct. Do not buy a plane ticket on your own, you may not get reimbursed.

Just FYI, I was able to fly from a different place than where my permanent address was. I was using my college address for AMCAS and USUHS and for the move. But I wanted to spend a few days with my parents before flying out. The lady I worked with to get a ticket was able to get me a ticket from my parents location rather than mine. I don't promise anything in case you all work with someone else, but its worth asking if you want to spend time somewhere else before you go.

Good luck to those on here still waiting...seems like some spots are opening up. Waiting on my MCAT score now (June 1, cant wait!) so I can start submitting! Hope to see you all next year 🙂

We must've taken the mcat the same day. That's when I should be getting my scores back... Of course, I found out 4 days later that I got into school afterall, so it doesn't matter, but...🙂

Good luck with the application process! Remember to submit as early as possible!

Ok...it's the Monday after May 15th. When should I give up hope?

The day classes start. I have a friend that got into USUHS on the day before classes started. Don't give up hope. Good luck!

Ok thank you dru and thank you pinknoise. I'll keep hope alive, but I also have to plan on applying to USUHS again and interviewing as early as possible this time around.

With ODS on June 13th, how much time between getting my acceptance call and ODS where they would still expect me to attend? Weirdly worded, but if I get a call on June 1st (or June 10th), would they still expect me to go to ODS?

Withdrew, Navy, prior. Good luck. Hope one of you gets it.

Think I got it, thanks for the spot. AD Navy, interviewed 10 Dec, waitlisted 17 Feb. Got the call this morning. Best of luck to everyone.

Not sure what you indicated your preference to be (I'm assuming Navy = ODS) but you might consider letting them know that you'll take a spot in any branch if it's not a big deal to you. A few weeks after declaring mine I decided that if it came down to it, wouldn't decline a spot in another branch of service so I changed mine to indicate that I wanted Army, but I'd take a spot in any.

And don't forget to keep in touch with Dr. Calloway. The more familiar your name is, the better.... always.

If you don't get accepted in time for your service to process orders, then you'll show up to USUHS a week or two early and a senior NCO will get you up to working speed (saluting, uniforms, etc...). I know that if you miss Army BOLC then you need to make it up after M1 year (and miss kerkesner) but I don't think that's the case for ODS or COT.

For Navy, if you're accepted late enough to miss both ODS and the week with the NCO at school, then you'll skip the operational clerkship (its what we do after kirkeshner) to make it up.

There were several people who were accepted before ODS, but not early enough to get orders - those were the ones that worked with the NCO. So, if you're accepted June 10, its not likely you'll go to ODS. Not sure about June 1st though - that'd be a good question for Rebecca.

Just talked to admissions for an update on my conditional acceptance. Now officially unconditional! 👍👍

Awesome, congrats. It was a tough decision, but I couldn't stomach another long commitment. Already did one 11-year commitment. I may see you out there. I'm still undecided on whether to do HSCP or HPSP (leaning toward HSCP, thought). Best of luck!

if any AF non-priors get their orders, could you let me know? I'm not staying at my permanent address at the moment and need to know when to harass my mom and sister to check the mail🙂

Also, are any current AF ppl in the DC/B'More area willing to take me onto a base to at least get my boots (am I able to do that?) I'd like to start breaking those in before COT...
Thanks, and good luck to those still waiting

And how do we do that?

Couple of good ways that I have employed in the past: Send update letters (even if it's just a note that you're still shadowing/working in a clinic/working in a lab/volunteering as you have been) to Calloway directly as an email attachment; send a short email letting her know that you're still interested, ask if there's anything you can do to improve your status on the waitlist (even though there usually isn't), and be direct that you're writing her so that your name is in the forefront of her mind when she's making further decisions regarding who to accept off the wait list.

My suggestion is to avoid being coy or cheesy about the emails... remember that she's probably getting dozens per day. Be honest about your intentions. It helps if you stopped by her office after your interview and met her personally---easiest way to plug yourself. If not, don't be shy, it's time to pull out all the stops and swallow all pride. I know it's hard (I've done a whole lot of it myself).

Also, if there was some part of your application that was weak (i.e. MCAT, like me) it's a good idea to let her know that you have specific plans for enhancing that item (Your plan is to go ahead and retake the MCAT this summer) which will help show your determination to keep plugging away.

Good luck. Hope this helps. If there's anything else I can do, I'd be glad to help. This is my third time applying, so I know your pain.

mcalloway@usuhs.mil

Also, setting up phone meetings (if she does this) or in-person if you're in the area is a great way to better introduce yourself to her. Call the admissions office to see if either is possible.

Anyone receive orders to OLBC yet? Anyone one else planning on driving to OBLC and then MD?

Does anybody else find CBRNE for Clinicians to a horribly boring course? And I think it's taking more than 8 hours.
