Interview invite. Next Thursday (3/11).
so i'm thinking of staying at a la quinta inn about 10 minutes south of UAB off of 65. anybody from Birmingham or anyone else that stayed at a hotel for their interview have any thoughts on this? i believe its on state farm pkwy and is near some other hotels, restaurants, and a taco casa. i don't need the plaza but also don't want to stay at a dump.
i think that's on lakeshore 3 exits down from UAB...i dont know anything about the hotel but i wouldnt expect much out of a la quinta inn, but it's not in a bad part of town or anything. it should take about 15-20 minutes max with traffic to get to the parking deck plus another 10 minutes to walk from the parking deck to volker hall.

So I just got an interview at UASOM for 3/11. Are there any seats left or are they pretty much for alternate spots now? Thanks!

Just being honest with you here: If you are doubting whether or not you want to interview at UAB then Pleeeaaaaase withdraw your app. Cause I guarantee you there are people not wondering if they are being considered an alternate that would gladly take your place. As far as your question goes, you are considered just like the others who have been interviewed, but not yet accepted so really it doesn't matter. If you are an alternate you still have a pretty good chance to get in.
Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as ungrateful. I really am excited about it, I was just curious. 🙂
If you want location, then the double tree downtown is like 2 blocks from Volker.
yep. went with double tree. any good places to eat within walking distance from there?

There is almost anything you could want within walking distance of the Double Tree. If you like Chinese I highly recommend New China in Five Points (2 blocks south of the Double Tree still on 20th St). That area also has French, Japanese, Mexican, Thai, Ruby Tuesdays, Jim N' Nicks, Pancake House, and Starbucks... the list goes on and on...
There's also a Subway and a nice cafe called Lucy's across the street from the Double Tree.
For dinner, you gotta get Surin West in 5 points south (3 min walk). Best food ever! Other than that... you are next door to subway, lucy's, jim and nicks, etc. For breakfast, the original pancake house (5 points south) has some of the best breakfast meals I've ever had.
So there's one interview day left at UAB, and I haven't heard anything. I interviewed last year(did not get in, of course) and my application is better this year.
My question is--is there any point in calling to ask whether all interviews have gone out? I'm sure they have, as we're less than a week out from the last possible date. Do you guys know of any reason why a reapplicant would not even be asked to interview again?

that is strange... what did you do to improve? if you don't mind me asking.
MCAT up a few points, GPA went up as well (great senior year), lots of volunteer and shadowing (as I had a year off🙂 ), went to Africa for a week for medical relief. Submitted early too!
hey guys, does anybody have any suggestions for apartments in Birmingham? I am trying to compile a list and get an idea of good places. thanks! 😀

I work two buildings down from Volker [...]
Me too. CEFH.
Callahan? Ha, me too. Small world. I work in the basement doing research... U?
Did you guys get the e-mail last week about "proper internet usage?" I hope they don't start blocking SDN 😛
Sometimes I walk around campus and wonder if the person walking next to me is a fellow SDNer.... or a member of the Admissions Committee...![]()
I live at Mayfair apartments in Homewood right now. They just remodeled the insides so its pretty nice. It's also very close to downtown ( I work two buildings down from Volker and my drive is like 10 min w/ traffic ). My rent is only $425/month but I have a roomate and no washer/dryer (thats what parents are for). Pet friendly. If you decide to live there, let me know bc they will give me $500 and I'll split it with you... haha.
I interviewed yesterday and was accepted by email today (oos)

Did Dr. Smith give any insight as to when we'd be hearing anything?

He said on Thursday that the bar was set at a certain level right now with grades, mcat, and gpa. He said that people who interviewed on Thursday that were above said bar would get an email Friday and it appears that is correct as at least one person on here did get an acceptance. Next Thursday is the last day for interviews and he indicated that they're pretty much going to wrap it up then and if needed the bar would be lowered. However, we also know that last year the last acceptances, waitlist notifications, and rejections went out via email 3/24 about 12 days after the last interview.
So, I guess at this point I feel as though yes, I'm under the bar. But yes, there are still seats left. The question is, how many will they fill at this level and if they readjust will I get in? Beats me. I friended a few people on Facebook after the interviews and thus far I don't think any of them have been accepted. Although you guys could be them for all I know. So hi to Marielle, DG, Jack, and Christine if you are on here.

Thacked, did you try to call UAB?
yes I did. Secretary who answered (not JC) said that not calling to obtain last year's interview feedback hurt me, regardless of my improvement. Either way, I'm not going to sweat it.
I might take you up on that offer if I decide to attend UAB!
I'm in both the Laser Center on third and the Lions Clinic on second. I've worked there for almost two years and didn't know we had a basement. What a putz.
If you ever see 6'4" of obvious it's me.

do you think they are still giving interview invites out? i know the last one is this week, but I have been 'remain under consideration..." for quite a while now.
