Well since we've heard that a lot of UAB's accepted students have multiple acceptances...do you think they're waiting to see who goes elsewhere?
Its true that south is waiting on UAB but not for this reason. south could care less about their rates, the reason they are waiting is to see how many students are going to get accepted to UAB that they have already accepted. its no secret UAB is their biggest competitor. south typically overfills their class expecting an estimated amount to go elsewhere. South cant accurately estimate this year how many people have multiple acceptances and thus cant with confidence send out anymore acceptances before UAB makes final decisions.

Don't accepted students have until May 1st to decide? They can't wait that long to make a waitlist right?

They definitely do not. I got this in an e-mail last week:so are you saying that UAB has some straight acceptances left to give out before they send out their waitlist?
Yo,
So I spoke to some admin folks and it turns out that UASOM has changed how they do interviews/accept people this year, which is causing a bit of delay in everything. There weren't a lot of specifics but it seems that they have moved to a "blind interview" where they don't know your numbers or anything so that there isn't bias... this apparently has caused some issues in the adcom decision-ability-ism (new word).
Keep the faith.

They definitely do not. I got this in an e-mail last week:
".Thank you for your email, we will add this to your file. The Admission Committee has made final decisions for the class and all notifications have been sent. All status will be updated as quickly as possible."
.At first it alarmed me because this makes it sound as though they have already completed all correspondence with all the applicants for this cycle, but that obviously isn't true since so many of us have not heard anything. Just a poor choice of words on the part of the sender. What it means, I think, is that UAB has offered at least enough acceptances to fill the class. Now they are waiting to see how many of those go elsewhere and will fill the openings from the waitlist.
I'm just so confused because I talked to a person last Wednesday evening who told me that not all of the acceptances had gone out and that no news was good news. I was, admittedly, still holding out hope. :-(
i just don't understand why they can't go ahead and release the wait list if they've already given out all their acceptances. what's the harm in letting people know where they stand?
From what I've read/heard, it seems they are having trouble formulating the waitlist due to their new interview system (per Van Brown). So the hold up is due to either:
a. Numerous "ties" in scores that they're having to split between tiers
b. A number of outliers in the scoring system that they're having to weed through
c. A combination of the two
d. Something similar
e. Something completely different...

so multiple sources have told me that uab sent out an unusually high number of out of state acceptances this year. 120 is the number i was told both times. they don't expect all 120 to wind up going to uab, so now we all have to wait until they find out how many of those wind up going elsewhere.

This whole process has been fairly nightmarish. Is that little red light that erases memories from Men in Black real?

120 out of state acceptances?! Wow, that seems kind of a lot with only 176 seats available. And, like ten of those seats are already claimed by people who were in the EMSAP program and probably another ten are going to people who did the rural program.
I'm guessing/hoping that is just speculation. Even if they did accost that many OOS, with the current state of our economy and the recent healthcare bill, I think most people will be looking for the cheapest route in medical school. So I assume most people will choose their state school - hopefully.
the first time i was told that tid bit of info, it came from peggy at the usa admission's office explaining why they were taking so long. she said they expected that only 20% of those OOS acceptances would wind up at uab

Right after I wrote that long paragraph.... Rejected from UASOM.... Hope yall have better luck!
Wow guys i'm so sorry. What were your stats?
I'm so sorry to all of you but how did you guys find out? My heart is about to beat out of my chest and I'm afraid to check my snail mail if that's what it was..
Have you heard from South? Are you going there? [/QUOTE=mwalker394;9500444]
I got into South so looks like I'll be going there. Any one know of some places to live. Preferably a place where med students live.... Should prob post this on the other forum
think it's safe to say that the waitlist will come out today. This is exactly how it went down last year.
1. When did everyone get their e-mail? Was it at the same time?
2. Have any re-applicants received acceptances?
3. I'm scared to check my secondary app status...
