Well since we've heard that a lot of UAB's accepted students have multiple acceptances...do you think they're waiting to see who goes elsewhere?

Its true that south is waiting on UAB but not for this reason. south could care less about their rates, the reason they are waiting is to see how many students are going to get accepted to UAB that they have already accepted. its no secret UAB is their biggest competitor. south typically overfills their class expecting an estimated amount to go elsewhere. South cant accurately estimate this year how many people have multiple acceptances and thus cant with confidence send out anymore acceptances before UAB makes final decisions.

We all got the e-mail from AMCAS. Here are the guidelines for the Admissions Committees at each medical school per AAMC. http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/admissionofficers.htm

It seems either:
a.) they've already filled out their class and are waiting to figure out how large their waitlist should be.
b.) they're behind for some reason.
c.) something else...

They definitely do not. I got this in an e-mail last week:

".Thank you for your email, we will add this to your file. The Admission Committee has made final decisions for the class and all notifications have been sent. All status' will be updated as quickly as possible."

.At first it alarmed me because this makes it sound as though they have already completed all correspondence with all the applicants for this cycle, but that obviously isn't true since so many of us have not heard anything. Just a poor choice of words on the part of the sender. What it means, I think, is that UAB has offered at least enough acceptances to fill the class. Now they are waiting to see how many of those go elsewhere and will fill the openings from the waitlist.

So I spoke to some admin folks and it turns out that UASOM has changed how they do interviews/accept people this year, which is causing a bit of delay in everything. There weren't a lot of specifics but it seems that they have moved to a "blind interview" where they don't know your numbers or anything so that there isn't bias... this apparently has caused some issues in the adcom decision-ability-ism (new word).

Keep the faith.

Was it not always partially blind?
The only thing they don't know are MCATs and GPA.

No I dont think so but who knows for sure. I have heard of a few people that got in like two fridays ago. It seems like around that time they may have finally filled the class but again who knows 😕

Guess that pretty much puts the nail in the coffin. I didn't really have delusions of getting an outright acceptance, but I was at least hoping spots were left so I could nab a decent position on the alternate list. The irony; waiting to be waitlisted for some more waiting.

I am, too. I happened to meet an adcom faculty member a couple of weeks ago who, if I heard her correctly, said my chances were still good at this point. She then went on to tell me not how I could find out more or further improve my chances, but what to do if I don't get in. Huh?

a. Numerous "ties" in scores that they're having to split between tiers
b. A number of outliers in the scoring system that they're having to weed through
c. A combination of the two
d. Something similar
e. Something completely different...

I just wonder if they really have given out all of their acceptances, only because that wasn't what I heard. Of course, good intentions doesn't always mean correct information.

Did your contacts in admin say when the adcom might figure out this obvioiusly complicated issue for them and get some word to us on either acceptances or wait lists????

120 out of state acceptances?! Wow, that seems kind of a lot with only 176 seats available. And, like ten of those seats are already claimed by people who were in the EMSAP program and probably another ten are going to people who did the rural program.

I don't understand their rationale for accepting so many out of state applications
1. Alabama taxpayer $'s support the medical school - therefore they should be like Miss and only accept in state applicants or accept a very limited # of OOS - NOT 120.
2. It is unlikely that many of the out of state med students will remain in AL and practice here and help alleviate the shortage of physicians in this state - isn't that the reason we have instate medical schools? to train physicians to practice in Alabama???
3. I can't imagine that they (OOS) will make better physicians than we will.

So, why accept so many out of state applicants???

Last year there were 87 non-residents accepted and only 25 matriculated. Lets hope this year a similar trend occurs.

I didn't think they were allowed to accept so many out of staters because it's a state funded school. They need to retract a few acceptances or I want a refund.

Is there a specific date that the OOS people have to accept or deny by? I know that May 15th is a cutoff date of some kind. But surely, even if they are waiting on the accepteds, they could not delay the waitlist until May....

Even if they did accost that many OOS, with the current state of our economy and the recent healthcare bill, I think most people will be looking for the cheapest route in medical school. So I assume most people will choose their state school - hopefully.

Starting to make sense now. Since they whored themselves out to OOS apps they are looking at a problem. 20% would mean that 24 OOS would accept which would be on par. That would mean that 96 would decline leaving the waitlist open. Only 90 people fit on the waitlist. UAB would look pretty bad if every single person got in off the waitlist and even worse if they had to call 6 rejected people and accept them. Wouldn't complain about that but it makes sense that they would wait for more withdrawals so they can formulate a good waitlist that matches a "norm" of waitlists.

I think I didn't do well in my interview; I'm also young (20) which I was told might not work in my favor; I also spent my entire junior year studying in France and didn't do any shadowing/bio/volunteering. Oh well! Good luck to everyone else!

got the email at 3:44, so no they didn't all go out at the exact same time. i actually checked my status when ppl started posting about rejections and saw it was no longer under consideration. then about 2 seconds later got the email.
