Yup, I'm from Cali. 🙂 Where are you from?

-Got the mail today- on hold. 🙁 They said I can send update letters but I'm not sure I want to beg for an acceptance. I already have on at a good school and if maryland doesn't really want me...

I'm from Georgia. I believe we talked with each other right before our first interviews. I wish you the best of luck with the maryland hold list. Good luck!

Thank you! I remember talking to you before the interview as well (there were the three of us in the waiting area). Congrats on your acceptance again!

We do indeed have a sim center here. It is located in the school of nursing (right next to the med school), and is used for various stuff throughout the 4 years. We also have a brand new surgical training/laparoscopy center in the hospital that is very impressive.

Post-interview hold. I'm really devastated. Judging from last year's forum it doesn't look like there's much hope at this point.

I'd wait until they send out the wait list information before you give up hope. If you are on the top half of the wait list I'd say you have a good shot. According to one of my friends in the class of 2013 theres about 30 people in her class that got in off the wait list.

You're right - I know I should try to be more optimistic. I wonder if maybe sending a letter of intent might help? I just loved the school so much when I interviewed that I'm sure this is where I want to be. I guess I'm also disappointed because I go to school out of state right now and thought I might finally get the chance to come home and be closer to my family.

Anyway, has anyone else who interviewed on 2/17 heard anything?

Interviewed 2/17, got the acceptance packet on Friday. Couldn't be more happy. My first acceptance 🙂 Good luck to all!

Has anyone who interviewed between 2/1 and 2/17 heard back yet? I am nearing 6 weeks of no news...

Any idea when the post-interview holds are re-reviewed/when waitlist info is given out/ when the interview season ends?

(Interviewed in November, Canadian, application on hold since December)

Interviews go through March and may have been delayed b/c of some of the weather we had here, so the earliest anyone would be reviewed from this category is likely to be early to mid-April. I am in the same boat and heard that no one in this category is likely to hear anything until early May and will most likely be wait listed at that time as the class will likely be full. This is absolutely my top school choice so I just hope they give me a chance to be the doctor I have always wanted to be.

Does anyone know if post-interview, Maryland will hold and waitlist applicants or only put them on hold until early May?

where did you get this information from?

also how does the UMD waitlist work? are those interviewed in March the last people on the waitlist?

I LOVED the school at my interview day, you couldn't pay me to go anywhere else even if i have to pay for UMD in full. They seem to REALLY care about their students and have great opps - all in all a great school in every aspect.

anyways - yea i figured those of us who were late might be interviewing for waitlist spots, does anyone have any actual numbers on how many spots they have already filled? how many acceptances have been given out? how many more acceptances they anticipate to give out?

i know last year the numbers were like 590ish interviews, 360ish acceptances. Does that mean 360 accepted including those accepted off the waitlist? what happened to the other people were they rejected or waitlisted?

sorry for all the questions - but i might retake my mcat to reapply to med school so i want to guage this a bit better.

for those that were waitlisted after interviews - how did you interview day go? what do you think they were looking for and where do you think you lacked?

I was pretty nervous during both of my interviews and ended up getting a post-interview hold...not sure if that had anything to do with it or not though.

I don't think you were interviewing for a waitlist spot if you interviewed in March. The tour guide on the interview day told my group that she interviewed on one of the last days and got accepted right away.

I think the person above was talking about when the post-interview holds will probably get re-reviewed.

I know I'm jumping the gun here, but I go by the motto "hope for the best, prepare for the worst"

I loved MD so much that I feel like withdrawing out of my other waitlist spot because if I didn't get into UMD this cycle, I'd rather reapply to go to UMD next year than go anywhere else - given my interest in working in Baltimore, UMD is the only medical school where I will get EVERYTHING i want out of a medical education. I can't see myself anywhere else.

sooo - anyone know anything about Reapplicants to UMD? or Early Decision at UMD?

I am TRYING to prep for the mcat again... but its not fun.... we'll see if my score looks good i might take the risk and retake just in case at the end of may. my biggest flaw this year was being late so I want to be prepared to apply early if i have to reapply.

DO NOT under ANY circumstances apply Early Decision. It was the worst mistake I've made in my entire life. I was deferred to the regular applicant pool anyway and it made me apply late to every other school. It ruined my chances everywhere.

My stats were above the average for UMD too, so I wasn't a poor candidate for Early Decision either.

Don't do it.

Like the previous poster said, I don't think anyone interviewing in March is interviewing for a wait list spot. What I posted earlier was related to those of us placed on post-interview hold and when we will get re-reviewed. Some people get in with this status, but I think it is kind of rare (but I'm not sure, so I could be completely wrong). What I posted earlier was a combination from the FAQ section on the website as well as talking with the admissions office when I received the news.

I think the acceptances you mentioned include those accepted off the wait list, but I could once again be wrong as I don't have any independent verification of this fact - simply an assumption I have made based on how I think these stats are typically reported and have heard they are reported at other institutions. All schools typically accept many more students than they are going to have matriculate b/c many students decide to go elsewhere. After all of those students are reduced, the wait list begins to move, but most likely not until May 15th will you see any significant movement based upon non-refundable deposits, etc. Anyway, if you have any other questions you think I may be able to answer, feel free to PM me.

Have you received any acceptances or just waitlist spots elsewhere? If you are accepted somewhere and you withdraw to reapply to Maryland next year, it would be idiotic. You are in no way guaranteed an acceptance at Maryland next year (in fact as a re-applicant you almost have a higher hill to climb - and I speak from personal experience). Its almost the same for the waitlists - if you get in somewhere, you should go rather than risk not getting into Maryland or anywhere else. Without an acceptance from Maryland in hand, the question should not be "would I rather go to Maryland than any of these other schools" but rather "would I rather not go to medical school at all if I can't go to Maryland?"

sooo - anyone know anything about Reapplicants to UMD? or Early Decision at UMD?

I would advise against applying early decision. If you were not accepted this cycle, applying early decision will not help your application at all as they've already indicated you're an immediately desirable applicant. If you apply again, apply regular cycle, and be prepared to discuss at an interview what, if anything, has changed to make you a more desirable applicant.

i just have one waitlist spot. anyways yea i think i need to see how this all plays out... which theres no point in being impatient now when theres only about 2 months left in the process, sometimes i think way too ahead.

thanks for the advice.

also - what is post-interview hold? do you mean when they made a decision regarding your application (i guess the 4-6 weeks after ur interview), they couldn't decide to accept reject or waitlist? so come time for the decision (may-ish?), what are possibilities? accept/reject/waitlist or just accept/reject?

so you were a reapplicant at umd med?

ooh ok sorry i misunderstood, i thought you meant those interviewed in march would be waitlisted but i undersand you mean that those with post-int. hold won't be re-reviewed till April at which point that group may be waitlisted.

In the past, post-interview hold has been like an unofficial wait list. They didn't like you enough to accept you, dislike you enough to reject you. They do review the apps from time to time especially if they get updates. Yes, it is possible to be accepted off of hold, I think it happened a bit last year, but the majority of the hold people end up on the waitlist, which will be done sometime in the next couple of months.

Yes, I was a reapplicant. I applied in the 2004-2005 cycle and was waitlisted in the middle 3rd of the list. My MCAT score was a bit old however, and I had chosen to apply only to Maryland that year as it was my top choice and one of the few schools that would take the older scores. My pre-med advisor contacted them when I was waitlisted, they suggested I retake and reapply to more schools, including Maryland, but they discouraged early decision. So I did all that, and was accepted during the 2005-2006 cycle (basically a lifetime ago at this point).

Would any current students or Baltimore natives be willing to give advice about good and safe places to live? Do most first years live in campus housing (and is it too late to apply at this point?) or do they generally live in apartments/row houses?

I was also wondering if the areas surrounding the off-campus apartment complexes are (relatively) safe. It's impossible to tell from their commercial sites. I doubt they would mention it if the surrounding blocks are a bit dodgy. I just want to be sure I can walk to and from class without fear 😛. I've been looking at The Atrium, Camden Court, Avalon Centerpoint, the Greenehouse, or Marleboro Classic. In your experience, are any of these better/worse than the others? Are some apartments known to be noisier than others?

I also hear that Ridgeley's Delight has nice town houses. Any good/bad experiences living there?

Thanks for any advice! And congrats to my future classmates!

I am currently, unfortunately, on post-interview hold, but I've lived in and around the Baltimore area for quite a while (currently about 20 minutes outside the city), despite growing up on the Eastern Shore. Immediately around the school is not the best area, in general, but you will want to avoid anything to the west of Martin Luther King Blvd (MLK). I know of the Atrium and have been told it is quite nice. There are other areas within the city that you can live and still walk to campus that may actually be a bit more fun. These areas include Federal Hill (my recommendation), Canton and Mount Washington. The walk from Canton would probably be too long, but there is a bus system and you could easily bike it most of the year. Baltimore really isn't that bad, especially when compared to what you hear in the news, etc (I love the city). There are specific areas you will want to avoid, but it's pretty safe overall. Like I said, I'd recommend trying to find someone who needs a roommate in the Federal Hill area as this is a nice area with many people in their low 20's to low 30's so there are usually things to do (lots of festivals spring/summer, etc). Feel free to PM if you have any additional questions.

Yes, I'm also currently searching for housing. I would love some opinions/reviews of the major apartment and townhouse complexes.
Thanks🙂

hey guys,

I'm pretty familiar with Baltimore and I'd actually think that the area around UMD Med is very safe (I've lived in more dangerous parts of baltimore (although, knock on wood, if you are smart you really arent at much risk for anything happening to you) and I don't consider the Inner Harbor area bad at all).

I know a lot of UMAB grad students live in Camden Court which is pretty nice and I heard newly renovated as well. Its also in a great area (At the intersection of Pratt and Lombard if I remember correctly?) The area around Camden Court is mostly corporate offices and touristy places like the inner harbor so its not bad at all. Its walking distance from the school too so I would recommend it.

I would happen to agree though that MLK probably isnt' the best place to live on/near, although there may be nice areas on MLK it is also the main artery so to speeak that runs through baltimore and through the more dangerous areas.

Just my $0.02 for you 🙂

Thanks for any advice! And congrats to my future classmates!

congrats to YOU! UMD is an awesome school, I hope you love it and love the city of Baltimore - in my opinion the greatest city in the world 😉

i think Baltimore is a place that (if you arent' familiar with it) ends up growing on you, its an urban area with the demographics of a major city but its also very connected and has a small town feel. Having your medical education at UMD is a huge asset, especially considering all of the great research they have and their expertise in clinical care!

obviously you've already chosen UMD but I just can't help feeling excited for you! 🙂 Have a great time!!

Most of the apartment complexes you listed are just northeast of the school/hospital. You're near the light rail route, so you have your fair share of shady characters from time to time, but as far as Baltimore goes it's quite benign. I know a female who lived in one of those apartments and always talked about how she lived in the "ghetto" and feared for her life, but she was the kind of person who loves to exaggerate things for some reason.

The Greenehouse is practically across from the library. Never been inside, but I knew a couple who lived there who enjoyed it. Location-wise I'd probably rather live there than the others.

I've lived in Ridgely's since I got here and really like it. The townhouses/rowhouses/whateveryouwanttocallthem for the most part are nice, especially given the reasonable (in my opinion) pricing.

Moving west of MLK isn't so bad (I think LS lived/lives in that area), particularly if you're not all that far west. Just don't be an idiot and you shouldn't have any problems.

aw, thanks! 😛 I am really excited!

I do hope you hear back soon! When was your interview? I think I was more nervous after the interview than I was during! I hate waiting! It didn't help that several of my coworkers got into the *wonderful* habit of asking every day if I'd heard anything. 🙂

Good luck to all of you still waiting or wait listed! I'm rooting for you! And thanks for the housing advice. 🙂

Um, but I live in Fed Hill now and have been much happier since moving here. Living 1 or 2 blocks across MLK would be fine. Several students lived on Scott Street. But I would definitely not go any farther. I lived past where the Safeway used to stand and while it wasn't that big of a problem for me, I would choose to live where I live now if I had it do over again.

Close to campus, Ridgely's, Fed Hill, etc are all fine. Baltimore is Baltimore and there is crime but in general stick to these areas and you will be ok.

As far as the on-campus housing, several people in my class lived there first year when they were moving to Baltimore for the first time. Most moved out after first year and found places with friends in the aforementioned areas. Its a decent option if you're totally unfamiliar with Baltimore and are nervous about finding a place to live on your own.

I'd agree, and really wouldn't recommend the area as anyone's first choice (just trying to quell the fears most people seem to have, although they are at least partly warranted).

I will say, though, that most of the "crime reports" we get emailed to us tend to all be focused right around Hollins St, not far from the BioPark (I know someone whose house was broken into while the police car that's camped out on Hollins was there just a block or so away).

Yea sorry I guess since you all are med students at UMD you would know better, I lived in different part of Baltimore so most of my advice comes from grad students I know that go to UMAB.

but in general with Baltimore - its not that bad, i don't know anyone thats really been a victim of anything (knock on wood), especially if you use common sense you will be fine.

I would highly recommend checking out The Atrium and Avalon Centerpoint if you have the money to pay for it. I've also been in the Greenehouse and it is not too bad (right below Potbelly's! lol)

Federal Hill is an awesome place to live if you have dogs, etc. Lots of young people, but walking to class is a little bit of a hike, so you might end up biking or driving most of the time.

I think a lot of people get a bad rep of Baltimore but the areas I mentioned are very safe as long as you are smart.

just drove down MLK today and passed by Ridgeleys, looks supercute and very convenient!!

Has anyone who interviewed during the week of 2/21 heard back from the office yet??

Yes. Acceptance letter in the mail. Interviewed 2/24.

The answer to that is a little strange... The date on the top was only two weeks from my interview, but my parents only found it in the PO Box last week. Was it lost in the mail? Are they only just now sending them? Did my parents just not check the mail? Don't know, sorry. Hoping you get some good news soon though.

Thanks! I just called the admission office and they said they sent out my letter on Tuesday..so I should receive it either on Friday or Saturday.

If you look at the stamp, the one from the post office, not UM, then you can see which date it was processed. Then you will know when it was sent.

Does anyone know if UM has a ranked waiting list? And it seems like several applicants heard back within a month instead of the official period of 6-8 weeks?

when we went for our interview day, Dean Foxwell said we would hear by the monday of the 3rd or 4th week.

perhaps 6-8 weeks gives cushion but its really around 4 weeks?

if anyone found out this week, when did you interview?

THANKS

After being placed indefinitely on pre-interview hold, I will now assume rejection since I am not interviewing today and it is the last day of March.

Good luck to everybody else waiting. :luck:

oh sorry, i forgot to answer the first part of your question

judging from the 2008-2009 University of Maryland thread, it looks like they did rank the waitlist

there was some buzz on that thread that the waitlist was ranked according to GPA and MCAT - not sure how true that is, its not an official report but something people talked about on SDN - can anyone verify this?

also - i think people on that thread said that they were notified as to whether or not they were in the top third of the waitlist - these are the people who have the best chance of getting off of it. This is in an official mailing from UMD that comes in May or something, which I am pretty sure is true because people pasted the exact content from their letters.

it also looks like (from this thread and last years) that there were 30 people who got off the w/l but I'm not sure how true it is cuz its not an official number, its judging off of SDN posts. Can anyone in the current 1st year class verify this?

A first year girl who I know personally at UMB told me that theres 30 people in her class that got in off the wait list so take that for what its worth.
