True enough, I think it will take a bit of time for them to begin the bulk of the WL movement. However, if you look at the official WL movement thread for 2010 there has already been some movement in various school across the country. Quite a large number of these were even contacted a few days before the 5/15 "deadline". *shrug* not sure what to make of it but im getting a little bit nervous.

If you look at the specific Maryland thread for last year there were no acceptance posts until the afternoon of May 19th, which was a Tuesday (15th was a Friday). If you assume they needed at least 1 day to process last year (Monday) and that everyone this year had until midnight last night to notify all schools (according to a previous poster), there really shouldn't be any movement until tomorrow at the earliest. I know I am applying a very small sample size (1, ha!), but the most recent history is likely the best for predicting future results. I also wouldn't be getting nervous. I know everyone says it, but what can you do at this point? Everything you can do has been done and you will be accepted or not based upon your application/interview. I want to go to Maryland more than anything and will be very disappointed if I am not accepted, but (to once again sound cliched) it could be much worse for all of us.

Did anyone else on the waitlist get an odd email from the Bursar's office this morning?

I did not, but I would take that as a great sign if I were you as I have heard that the financial aid office is really on top of things. My guess is you will be getting a call sooner than later. Hopefully a congratulations will soon be in order.

Do you mind me asking what the email said?

So it was SO odd becasue it said "thank you for applying" and said once you are "officially admitted" but it also seemed to contain information I certainly dont need as just an applicant! AHHH the suspense!

This is the email:

IMPORTANT UMB STUDENT REFUND INFORMATION

Thank you for your application to one of the schools/programs of the University of Maryland Baltimore. We are excited that you are thinking about joining us for the 2010 Summer Term or 2010 Fall Semester.

We want to share with you UMB’s process for delivering refunds to our students. Our refund process is provided through HigherOne. HigherOne is a company that provides higher education institutions and their students with efficient and easy-to-use methods to disburse student refunds. Our partnership with Higher One will allow students to choose between three ways to receive their refunds (including financial aid funds).

1) ACH Transfer directly to their current bank account through ACH automated clearinghouse
2) Easy Refundsm to the OneAccount – Students can elect to create a banking relationship with UMB’s refund processor, HigherOne.
3) Paper Check by mail

Once you are officially admitted and registered for classes, you will be mailed a Easy Refund card from HigherOne that serves as UMB’s Refund Choice Card. This card may resemble an unsolicited credit card. Please DO NOT DISPOSE of it as it is necessary for you to use it to select one of the three refund methods that work best for you. To see a sample mailing including the card and envelope follow the link provided: http://www.EasyRefundCard.com/info/cardEnvelope.jsp

Your UMB Refund Choice Card will be mailed to your mailing address listed in SURFS, the UMB Student User Friendly System. Please check that address for accuracy. For more information on how to update your address in SURFS please click on the following link: http://www.umaryland.edu/fin/forms/CheckChange AddressSURFS.pdf

More information will be provided to you once you are registered for classes.

I am scared to be overly optimistic in this process but what you just said definitely made my day 🙂

Sorry to be a bubble burster but this e-mail goes out every year and tends to go out to anyone who's already submitted the FAFSA, etc, and gets to people who have NOT been admitted yet. Every year people freak out and every year they try to fix it and so far every year they haven't.

Actually I called the admissions office- I was pulled in off the wait list. So apparently the financial aid office is on top of things!

Then it appears a congrats is in order, so congrats! You must be on Cloud 9 right now. I'm really hoping they get to me, but I'm, obviously, not sure where I am in the top half. Congrats again, and hopefully I will see you there in the fall.

yea thats true I know of a lot of people who heard on sunday from waitlists at other schools... doesn't help with UMD cuz none of them were going to UMD but if you think about it if schools are already moving that means someone who moves off the waitlist from X gives a seat to someone from UMD giving us a seat hopefully?? hehe... wishful thinking I know.... I just always see the light at the end of the loong looong tunnel 😉

good luck to everyone, lets hope for some news this week!!! 🙂

Pretty quiet so far, especially as compared to last year, and not sure what to make of it at this point. I will continue to wait and continue to be hopeful.

Not too quiet....I just got the call.

Interviewed Dec 2. First choice all along - I think I hurt my voice screaming. Good luck to all of you!! Hopefully you will hear soon 🙂

Any idea when we might expect more movement?

ugh... i kno. But at leassst maaaaybe we might get a priority consideration from being on the waitlist this year?

maaaybe they will be like "well these kids have waiting enough... lets just admit them this time around!" 😉

yea super wishful thinking i kno lol

GOOD LUCK with EVERYTHING everyone.

Hang in there!! 🙂

From being waitlisted back in the day and then accepted the next year, I can tell you that you're under more pressure to show what's changed in your application, what's improved, that makes you a better applicant this time around.

Just got a call at 12:00 - First acceptance...

In-state. Interviewed 1/27.

Good luck to the rest of you. Keep hope alive. I hope you hear good news soon...

Congrats! That's great! I interviewed on the same day so I'll take this as a positive sign (yes, I'm looking for any sliver of hope at this point). Ha

Yea my advisor told me this too and suggested that I wait one more year before reapplying. So I am not just competing against everyone else but myself from last year?? What if I have been doing research, working in clinics, taking classes or volunteering for the last four years. How is waiting one extra year going to be THAT MUCH DIFFERENT/ BETTER??? 😡 Please I need some feedback..

It might not be. Unfortunately, if a school doesn't accept you, there's a reason. If you don't change something about your application, its almost like burning money to reapply with the exact same application - its the same you, so you can expect the same result. In my case, I retook the MCAT. Also my advisor spoke with Dean Foxwell and solicited information on what could make me a stronger applicant (MCAT was the answer). If your advisor is willing/able to do this for you, it could help.

what if most of the reason was a late application in the first round... does an early application necessarily change anything?

Do you KNOW it is only your late application and definitely nothing else? My application during my second cycle was not complete until very late. I interviewed in late February and was accepted. If you're banking on an earlier application for a reapplication, I'd be very very certain there's nothing else holding you back.

no not certain just asking... def agree though you have to show how things are different the second time around.

Has anyone called/emailed admissions after getting their waitlist notification early May and asked where exactly they are on the waitlist?

I know the letter said they will notify us of any changes/updates - but I was wondering if it would be innapropriate to ask where I am on the list... just want to know for reapplication purposes!

Hope ya'll had a great Memorial Day Weekend! 🙂

I highly doubt that they'd tell you where you are on the list, but you could try and let us know how it goes lol

Anyone know if the list is moving? Forums been pretty dead.

yea... anyone hear back or anything? or HEAR of anyone hearing back? or HEAR of anyone dropping off the waitlist/acceptance withdrawals?

Also - anyone know how full the class is right now? Perhaps they overbooked? any thoughts?

they oversubscribed the class to begin with. There are 160 spots and the admissions lady told me they sent out >200 offers. I imagine the class is now full...but I imagine there will still be a bit of movement. Probably another 10 ppl or so.

I know of someone that received the coveted call today, so yes, there is still movement! Congrats again (you know who you are)! Make us fellow Decatur alumni proud! Hopefully I will see you in the fall, if not, I guess I'll be reapplying and looking for a job with WHO hopefully.

Hey everyone, I got the call this past Friday around noon. First and only acceptance!! Very excited and good luck to everyone else. I'm sure there will be some more movement in the next couple of months.

Just got a call today (I'm the one dcathell is referring to) while at work...so so excited!

This is my first and only acceptance thus far wooohooo.

Congrats!
I think there should still be a bit more to come. I think Dr. Foxwell likes to make the calls himself, and he's obviously a busy doctor...so he doesn't do them all at once he has to space them out a bit.

Wishful thinking 🙂

haha yea i kno, about to submit my AMCAS tho for 2011 soon so I hope he finishes his calls soon!!

although I am so ready to go to UMD Med even if they tell me the day before classes start... I'll abandon all my apps and don't care how much money i lost through AMCAS.... can't put a price on another YEAR!!

congrats squall- that's awesome! i know you have been waiting for this for a long long time...
dcathell, you're next!

Thanks! I am continuing to keep the faith while starting the reapplication process.

by any chance, does anyone know if sending updates has any impact? although the waitlist has already been ranked, i was thinking of giving a last hoorah and feel some sort of consolation in trying as hard as i could have.

I think sending updates is definitely worth the effort. I don't necessarily believe that your ranking is determined to be set in stone. It could change slightly if the admissions committee knows you're very interested and determined to come to Maryland. It is very unlikely to make a change, but I would personally feel better knowing I did everything I could than to wonder "What if?"

totally agree with terp89 - if its something that you will really regret not doing then do it.

as long as you don't become pushy about it I think you are fine, one update letter at least will put your mind at ease so you can have some closure.

Isn't it amazing the amount of time we have all spent on this process? We constantly ask questions, read forums, research the internet, etc and it's all opinion and conjecture. So, for what it's worth, my opinion is the same as the others. At this point, it is very unlikely to hurt, though it is also unlikely to help either. Regardless, you should probably do what will make you live with the least amount of regret. In the end, we could all be worse off. I, for instance, lost my job as my employer discovered I was applying to medical school. That is fine since I am not going to pursue that career regardless of what happens with this application cycle, but it does greatly impact my family's financial situation for the time being. So I'm now reapplying and looking for a job in the medical field - something very hard to do with 8 years of business experience and an MBA - not really something these jobs have for requirements. But, I'm still happy because I know I'm moving in the right direction and I will soon get there. So, if you know you're supposed to be a physician, don't worry, some day you will be and you'll still be there before you're my age. Good luck again everyone.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I sent a last update/LOI and now waiting, wishing, hoping for the best. I'm totally with you on the pains of the process, dcathell, and I wish you and everyone the absolute best. This is my second time on the top-half of the waitlist (I applied early after my Junior year in college after coming with loads of credits), so it's rather disheartening after a year of what I thought were improvements. We'll get our dreams and hopefully cross paths in the future. Still several more weeks in this cycle. All the best of luck to everyone.

I'll be planning a year off to do something awesome and fun. Any ideas?

I have a friend who was a deckhand on a yacht. He said its like seeing the world through a billionaires eyes.

dacathell and prodizzle - you guys are some of the wisest people I've seen on a studentdoctor board, I really hope you get in - personally I think we need more doctors who really understand the big picture!

at the end of the day - MD or no MD - you guys are awesome. I can't wait to see what you all end up doing and I hope you all get to do what you want to do 🙂

I totally agree - do something for yourself and do something awesome - work on a cruise ship, imagine all the places you'd see!!

I would totally do something like that if I could!!

Hey I had a question for you all - I wanted to attend the UMD open house but I'm not sure if we're allowed to, the wording on the website says - The Open House is only intended for students who have not previously applied and/or are currently on the waitlist.

Does that mean waitlistees CAN or CANNOT attend?

This is probably a stupid question but I guess my grammar isn't great so I wanted a second opinion and feel stupid emailing and asking them what the wording means!

In my opinion, it says if you have applied you can't so maybe not.
