Hey I had a question for you all - I wanted to attend the UMD open house but I'm not sure if we're allowed to, the wording on the website says - The Open House is only intended for students who have not previously applied and/or are currently on the waitlist.

Does that mean waitlistees CAN or CANNOT attend?

This is probably a stupid question but I guess my grammar isn't great so I wanted a second opinion and feel stupid emailing and asking them what the wording means!

I called the admissions office last week and asked about this. The coordinator of the program said that it's NOT for people who are currently on the waitlist.

Does anyone know what day orientation/first day of class is for this year? Good luck to everyone waiting, hopefully we hear something soon. 🙂

when i look at the "tentative" year one schedule, it says Thurs, Aug 12

dacathell and prodizzle - you guys are some of the wisest people I've seen on a studentdoctor board, I really hope you get in - personally I think we need more doctors who really understand the big picture!

at the end of the day - MD or no MD - you guys are awesome. I can't wait to see what you all end up doing and I hope you all get to do what you want to do 🙂

Thanks for the compliment and well-wishes premedchelli - really made my day! But trust me, I'm not any smarter than your average person, I just work harder a lot of the time (not always - ha!). I'm not sure what I'm going to do if I don't get into medical school, but I'm going to do whatever I can to make a difference in my next career. I had some pretty great experiences in the world of corporate finance (travel throughout the world, etc), but I was never fulfilled. Hopefully we will all get in and simply laugh at the amount of time we fretted over medical school acceptances. I know it seems huge now, but there are so many worse things we could be dealing with - at least we have another chance. Good luck again!

Anyone know if there has been much waitlist movement compared to previous years? I'm in the top half of the list.

They should be sending out the waitlist update email sometime this week saying how many they took off of the waitlist so far and about how many more they expect to accept.

Thanks Terp89.

it doesn't look like there have been as many on this thread getting off the waitlist as there were last year

but thats just on sdn, who knows what the real numbers are.

i am curious to see how much detail the waitlist email goes into...

haven't gotten anything from them yet and its thursday afternoon, and they said this week right?

I think they said mid June in the waitlist letter, but could be late June at this rate. The waiting continues.

you think it'll be an email or a snail mail letter?

prediction: snail mail letter dated tuesday, in the mailbox tomorrow.

thats what happened with the w/l letter!

it says "email update in mid June" on the waitlist letter. i don't know why it hasn't been sent yet. maybe monday morning?

below is what someone posted on 6/16 on last year's thread. i don't know how accurate these statements are though, so take them with a grain of salt.

"Looks like, from the 2007-2008 thread, it was sent out right about this time last year, and it said how many people had been pulled from the WL, and about how many more they expected (3-4.)"

"20 people taken off the WL - 3 posted on SDN. I guess about 15% of applicants are represented on SDN then ... for what that's worth."

"Well, Dean Foxwell said the WL shrank to 130, and then 20 offers were made, so that means the top half could be more like 45 people by now ... still, somewhere between 0 and 6 more offers out of 45, doesnt look like great odds ..."

sort of surprised - most of umd contact was on time if not early (my letter came in the 4-6 week window as promised, and my w/l letter came BEFORE May 15th)

this one is a bit late... i wonder whats going on over there!

From my experience this cycle, Maryland has been late on a few things for me. Nevertheless, I do appreciate that they make a true effort to inform applicants on what's going on. Guess we'll keep waiting. And to be quite honest, I'm not looking forward to the letter as I think it will probably give some bleak news that the waitlist movement is dwindling down.

Come on, Dr. Foxwell, just press those 10 digits and we'll chat for a few minutes. That's all I ask for.

hahahha, i knoo. ONCE I answered an unknown call and the lady said "this is X from the school of medicine" but it was the school of medicine where I work, NOT UMD... 🙁

WAITLIST LETTER - Just received by email

basically 20 have gotten off, 161 booked for a class of 160. If you are in the top half, you have a chance until July - after that you should begin plans for next year (... but we all know by july we should be done secondaries to have a shot for next year...)

good luck to people in the top half!! hopefully it will work out one way or another!! 🙂

haha you know what - if I've learned anything from this year of apps... its that ANYTHING can happen...I know people with one interview that got an immediate acceptance.. others that are well qualified with MANY interviews and no acceptances... I don't think my word has any weight on this process.

My point is - for everyone to have their best shot, we all gotta get our stuff in early... cuz anything CAN happen so why not give it the BEST shot?

I got an email about orientation the other day and I was able to click the details and see everyone it was sent to. It was sent to 158 people total including myself so there may still be a few more spots in the class. Best of luck waiting out the next few weeks and best of luck to all those reapplying. Your time will come its not a matter of if its just a matter of when!

hey psxdcsquall,

were you in the top half of the waitlist?

thats awesome. I'm happy for you!! 🙂 didn't get that email... but its just as well, already paying for secondaries...

I was just accepted off the Wait List last week! I was wondering whether there is a Google Group started yet for the class?

I was accepted off the waitlist yesterday, my first choice! There is still hope out there.

CONGRATS dangus and sams song!! Thats awesome, was it by phone call or email?

aah sorry bout my last post, I was mistaken. I read back in the threads and saw that PsxDcSquall was taken off the waitlist, sorry for the confusion! i thought you meant you got the email while on the waitlist as a sort of pre-acceptance slip up.

neways - its is really nice of you to post up the numbers for all the other waitlisters! thanks for pulling for us and keeping us informed 🙂

only a few more weeks till med school starts, good luck psx! 🙂

hey guys, i still haven't received my acceptance packet and they told me that I had five days to get it back to them and it's been that long and I haven't received it. How long did it take you guys to get your acceptance packets once you were called about being accepted? I know its ridiculous, but they wouldn't give my spot away would they? I removed myself from all other schools, so i guess i'm just a little nervous.

i got my packet the day after the call. i would just call and tell them that you definitely intend to matriculate and that you have not received a packet yet. i wouldn't worry about any problem - they seem very organized. they wouldn't let something this important fall by the wayside. congrats!

thanks terp, i'll definately give them a call tomorrow to clear this up.

Hey Guys,

So I was contaced wednesday about an acceptance! 🙂 I got the packet yesterday so I didn't want to post until its official!! 🙂

I guess I'll be seeing you all in August??

And sams song - definitely call them! They told me when my packet would be received by, did they tell you that too? It seems they do it immediately!

congrats on your acceptance premedchelli!!!

they just told me that they were sending out my packet immediately and that I had 5 days to return it (which today is the fifth day). A little nerve racking, but i'm sure it just got lost in the mail or something. I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow to make sure they know that I 100% intend on being there on August 12th. I hope they didn't give my spot away because tomorrow will be 6 days, ha. 😳.

Hey guys

For accepted students- anyone know about what Anatomy Atlas/Textbook that most of the med students would recommend? We have to choose between 6 atlases/3 textbooks..but don't really know how to decide.

Hey Sams Song

Did you call??

I hope everything turned out well!! Please keep us updated!

😀 I called and they said that it probably took a few days for Dr. Foxwell to sign the acceptance paper. They said that it was okay and that it should be here soon. Either way i'm going up to look for an apartment soon, so i'll stop by the office. They told me not to worry though. Thanks for checking in. Do you have any information on books or orientation, or really anything??🙄

YEY sams song, i was worried for you! glad to see they didn't give away your seat! 🙂

haha nooo, nothing really figured out.. just flyin by the seat of my pants right now... hoping i'll get things figured out by the 12th...

do we need books the day orientation starts? it looks like classes don't start till august 23 and orientation is aug 12-aug20 so does that give us buffer time to get prepped???

I only know these dates cuz a few pages before this one in the thread someone posted a calendar.... anyone have any more info?

All great questions! How do other people have that information? Do you think they sent it in an e-mail or something? I only know about the 12th because they told me that date over the phone, but other than that I know nothing.

haha same boat!

see if you can find anytihng back in the threads somewhere! my net is too slow for me to look, but I might check tomorrow when I have access to a better computer 😉

Structure and Development is ure first course. It consists of anatomy, histology and embryology. It will start after a week of very chill lectures and getting to know your fellow med students through bar visits (not my style personally, but people have fun) and other school organized events.

This is referred to as an ICM week (introduction to clinical medicine). Eventually you will have an ICM instructor, a physician or several with whom you spend one afternoon a week with in the clinic. This regular meeting however does not start until the end of september to allow you all to adjust in slowly to a larger load of school work. But the beginning lectures are technically part of the same 'course.' So when it says on the calendar (http://medscope.umaryland.edu/main/schedules/10-11ms1_calendar.html) that S&D doesnt start until the 23rd, they're pretty serious. That's when REAL school starts. Before then you'll still more or less be on vacation, but thinking, hey, this med school thing isn't so bad! just u wait though.

Concerning text books, it really depends. You will not need them till S&D starts. The labs have grant's atlas, which sucks. I had a netters and a rohens atlas. Neters is classic, and the flash cards are great. Rohens is a prosection, really beautifully dissected pictures of bodies, which can be really really helpful when your looking for something on your cadaver, and you really dont know what it should look like. I recommend both.

text wise, I heard after the fact, and would definitely agree that for histo you should get the "color atlas of histology" by gartner and hiatt. i did get the clinically oriented anatomy ( think thats what its called, cant find it though)), and it is very interesting to read, but theres just really not enough time to spend reading every chapter. hopefully someone else can chime in if they think ANY anatomy book will be helpful for any reason. Otherwise just use the class notes and powerpoints.
