omg Leonora, awesome post, thanks!! i'm a little worried about some of the places in Brickell, when i started doing online research i found some pretty terrible reviews for them on apartmentratings.com 🙁 did anyone you talk to express any concerns about living there? were most people pretty happy?

also, does anyone know if you qualify for in-state tuition after living in FL for a year?

From what I've read online, it looks like we don't qualify for in-state tuition. I think the school bases residency on whether we originally moved to Miami for schooling (which we are about to). 🙁 Yay loans!

Camden doesn't have very good reviews online (18% rating on one of the sites), but I felt pretty comfortable with it while I was there. I think that some of the reviews might be a little unjustified. I am worried about the "renter's insurance" and "hidden fees," so I contacted the marketing manager (Jason) and am waiting to hear back from him - I'll post again when I hear from him. It seemed pretty quiet, though, and the people felt friendly. Then again, I HAVE been living in a dorm room for the past four years, so maybe I just automatically tune out noise. 😀 I talked with some people at the school who lived in Brickell - the AXIS building and One Plaza West (along with Seybold) seem popular. Apparently very few students actually stay in Jackson and Dominion after the first year - not one of the med students recommended it. Nobody said anything about Camden, but I saw some scrubs while I was there and the marketing manager who said med students live there seemed very trustworthy (he lived in the building for three years before joining the marketing team two years ago).

I looked Axis up online for reviews and stuff and I actually really like it too. It's a bit pricey so I might need to find a roommate. Thanks for all the info!

just created my caneID. woot! 🙂 Has anyone signed up for a parking spot yet? it seems like this would be rather hellish...

If you end up in AXIS, I'd just get a metro pass. They're $50/month for a med student, and the metro apparently drops you right at campus. I think it's probably cheaper than gas+parking spot. One of the students actually timed the Brickell-Jackson ride and found it to be 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

You won't qualify for in-state unless you buy property is work full-time. I think that's pretty standard.

That is the plan if I do go the Axis route. However, I would probably want a roommate if the 2bd/2bath are cheaper (split between two) than a one bedroom or a studio.

There definitely are some med students living in Camden, I know a few first and second years there. Parking really isn't a problem on campus, there's a huge parking garage next to campus so if you sign up for it you'll probably wind up in there. It's very close to the med building.

Another building to check out might be "The Vue," it's basically across the street from axis. Also there's a building "Infinity" pretty close by that just opened up so may be cheap spots there.

whats the best way to find a place in Miami? Craigslist is pretty poppin' in philly but the Miami one doesnt look so hot.

Man UM is awesome, after seeing all the Florida schools minus FSU, it's my favorite.

Craiglist is a really good way of finding an apartment in Miami, even if it just gives you an idea of locations of buildings and prices. Craiglist is how I found my apartment that I live in now.

Has anyone heard anything about scholarships from here yet?

I haven't...and to make sure, the only things to fill out for Miami are the FAFSA and the diversity/money scholarship form, correct?

The merit-based ones have been filtering in - I received a letter (I think it was dated 3/10), and I know there were several before me. No clue about diversity/need/financial aid, though. The financial aid officer mentioned during second look that financial aid letters will be sent soon. Hope for the best! :xf:

Does anyone happen to know when the adcom meets next?

...still waiting.

Is it even possible to get a need-based scholarship in addition to the merit one? Based on the wording in the letter, it seems like they typically give one or the other.

I haven't even started looking at apartments yet -- I have no idea what to look for 🙁. All I know is that I'd like to find a nice 2 bed/2 bath apartment and a roommate. Being close to the Metro would be a plus, but I'll have a car, so it's not that big of a deal. If the place can keep a cat, that's a plus, but absolutely not necessary. The student host that I stayed with lived in a 2/2 in the AXIS on Brickell, and it was AWESOME. However, I have a feeling that it's crazy expensive.

If anyone is interested in apartment shopping with me, my AIM is TheCowOfLight.

It's actually not that bad. I was looking into AXIS cause it looked crazy awesome and the rent for a 2bd/2bath was 1400-1600 which isn't bad with a roommate. Then again, I live in a crappy apartment in Ca for the same price so I might just be pleasantly surprised. With a roommate, it should be very doable.

$800 a person in those apartments would be totally fine with me. The place I lived in for a summer in Boston was $680 a month, and that was just for a room in a six-person house. Ridiculous. For the location and the amenities, I'm more than okay with AXIS.

What letter?
The one about a merit scholarship. At one point, it says, "If at any time you receive other tuition scholarships, this institutional scholarship may be adjusted or withdrawn."

Hmm... interesting.

Finally rejected this morning. Already mentally rejected myself anyways, especially after the Boca issue... Good luck to all!

I love getting Mar/Apr rejections... it's like yeah, I kind of figured out by now that I'm rejected / not being invited to interview.

Although to give schools credit, I'd rather hear eventually than get a silent rejection.

Rejected pre-interview too. And what is with the wording on that email?! Its sooo harsh to tell someone they have been terminated from the admissions process and that the action is going to be communicated to AMCAS! WTF Could they pull the plug any ruder?!

I guess they are sending them out in waves?

You got into U of M and you couldn't get into Miami? Wow! We can switch if you want. 😀

Not being a Florida resident is a HUGE disadvantage when applying to Miami. I'm blessed to be attending Michigan in the fall, so I really can't complain about a few rejections here and there.

I must have gotten pretty lucky, then. I got rejected at U of M pre-interview and I got into Miami! Oh well, it's all part of the stochasticity of the process, I guess.

If you interviewed there recently, what's their deal with getting back to you? I know everyone's headed to the waitlist at this point and that it's ranked, so most movement is after May 15th, but is there any sort of correspondence to expect before then since I haven't heard anything since I interviewed a couple weeks ago.

When I interviewed, they told us what day the adcom would meet over us. The first communication came through email then I got a phone call the same day. About a week later the letter arrived.

There are 2 waitlists. A temporary one which should go pretty fast as people start releasing their acceptances and another one which won't move as much. I guess the difference between both depends on how high you rank in the list.

The area around Brickell, which traditionally has been very expensive, is pretty cheap right now and it will probably remain so for a few years. There is plenty of brand new buildings downtown Miami which are vacant, so rent will be cheap.

Hey, could you give us a rough idea of what constitutes as cheap and what as expensive? Thanks!

Yea, those are definitely relative terms. "Cheap" in Boston is like $725 a month, haha.

Finally got the long awaited rejection email to make it official...
I was wondering when it would come.

Cheap in Pullman is about $225/month. I've decided that I'm just going to go broke for the next four years.

Hey brickell appartment seekers. Two things to keep in mind:

1) Recenly a woman was raped in the Axis elevators. Security there SUCKS despite it having awesome apartments (the interiors are very awesome).

2) Camden can be extremely loud (a lot of late night partying, thin walls) but this is neighbor dependent. On the flip side you absolutely can't beat the location. Right next to metro (absolute best way to commute), right next to brand new publix, right next to great restaurants/night life. Another important thing to know: the leasing office staff act very nice to your face but will screw you in half a second if they can.

If you're looking for a place this is a good reference web site.

Thanks for the info! Do you know anything about Seybold Pointe (leasing office, noise level, etc.), by any chance?

When I read the bold part my heart almost dropped. This is by far the worst rejection letter I have read. Who uses the word Terminating????

The Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has reviewed your credentials and I must now inform you that we are terminating the admissions process with you and communicating this action to AMCAS. Our decision is based solely on the large number of outstanding applicants who have applied this year and the relatively small number of spaces available in our entering class. As a consequence, many applicants with credentials such as yours must be turned down.

Does anybody know if there is a date when they send the financial aid package? I sent fafsa and essays... haven't heard anything from them since and cant find a date on the website. Any experience from last year
thanks guys

I don't know very much about Seybold Pointe. It is close to campus. There's a major chain grocery store 2 blocks down the road (not the nicest). That's about all I know. Wish I could tell you more.

They told me by the end of March but nothing as of yet

My feelings exactly! They need to review the wording on this rejection letter...
