Does anyone know how the temporary alternate list works? Like the later you interviewed, the lower down on the list you are placed? Or does it all have to do with that ranking you are given by the admissions committee? Hopefully the rest of the temporary alternate list is accepted soon (myself included)!

They throw you on it based on a ranking system. I had one of the last interviews but was one of the first off the temp list. It's nothing to do with how late other than the fact that you only could have gone on the temp vs. a direct acceptance if you were later on.

interviewed at the very end of March, but already got the call plus a really nice scholarship. Just hang in there regardless of when you interviewed, and hopefully we'll all see each other in the fall. The waitlist is definately moving. :luck:🙂

Anybody still looking for a roommate?? I'm kind of in a panic- August is approaching very fast! Any of you ladies that were accepeted and looking for a roomie please let me know! 🙂

Also, I interviewed March 8th and was put on the temp alternate list... got the call a week ago! There is still hope!!

Accepted on Monday... still can't believe it! I'm thrilled and am so excited to meet you all. I thought I was out of luck, so keep the faith if you're still on the wait list.

would any of you that has been accepted off of the temporary alternate list mind posting your stats?

Also what was the wording on ur letter that let you know u were on the temporary alternate list?

Thanks

Dude, your letter said "temporarily" which obviously indicates you are on the temporary WL. You are on the temp list so just be patient.

3.9/32R, interviewed on 3/12, placed on temporary alternate list, and then accepted 5/14... Good luck to you! 🙂

Hey all!

I lurked a bit on StudentDoctor during the application process, but never really posted - I'm a 22 yr old guy, just graduated from UF. Got my acceptance on the 17th and just made it official a few days ago, so I'll be coming to Miami in the fall!

I'm just started the housing/roommate search, so if anyone is looking for a roommate or has housing advice, I'd be happy to hear about it! I'm probably going to take a trip down in the next week or two to look at places, but I'll do plenty of online searching until then.

@Kaiv Man - Thanks for the site link, I'll check that out.

I don't have any close friends going to Miami, so I can't wait to meet everyone! Good luck to those still waiting - just stay positive!

Hey mattm608, I found the following post to be very helpful for housing in Miami. See ya in August! Thanks Leonora!

Alright, here's our opinions about the rentals we found. We visited apartments in the morning and then met up with a realtor who showed us some higher-end (but reasonably priced) condos in the afternoon. All of the listed prices are either a studio or a 1-1.

Seybold Pointe - I loved it, but my fiance really wants Brickell for the location. We technically didn't meet with the realtor for the building (a really nice maintenance woman snuck us in and gave us a tour of some open units), so we can't be sure on price... however, online the 1-1 go from $850 to about $1000. Apparently several med students live in the building (we met a few of the guys and they seem great). Nice size of room, w/ washer and dryer in unit. There is 1st floor bike storage and the building is near a grocery store and right across from the metro. Free guest parking. Not the best area of town, but I was comfortable in it and it didn't seem dangerous at all. Biking distance or one stop on the metro from Jackson. This one is one of our top three picks.

Highland Park Lofts - hardwood floors and granite countertops, very close to Seybold Pointe. $850-1000 for a 1-1, and biking distance to Jackson (walking to metro). Small deck provided (BBQ anyone?), but no overhead lights in bedroom (alright, I'm picky). Lots of drawers, comes w/ dishwasher, fridge, microwave, several med students in building. You can rent-to-buy if you like it (the units go for $180,000 on the market, but the manager told us we'd steal it at $140,000... appraisal value is $125,000 so sounds a little iffy to us). You get one parking spot with the room. No workout room (all other buildings had one), but I liked the kitchen a lot. Fiance thought the building felt a little cold... not our favorite place, but it's more upscale than Seybold for those of you who are looking for something a little nicer and close to campus.

Miami Bay Club - this is up NE of campus, in the Biscayne Bay area. The building literally is on the bay, and it's not high-rise style (sprawled out a little more). Gated community with free BBQs (yay!) and a weight room (w/o dumbells). There's a tennis court and pool. Pet-friendly building, but no washer/dryer in room (there's one set per floor for $1.50/wash or dry). Each unit gets two parking spots, one in the gated parking area and one in a covered gated parking area. Prices range from $995 - 1050ish right now for a 14 month lease (there's a deal going on right now that might be extended) - normal prices are only about $50 more. The more expensive apartments are on the side overlooking the bay. There's a bus stop nearby, but the building is not on the metro. I'd have to get a second car ( 🙁 ), but they do have free parking for it... and it's a pretty decent place if you have transportation. Contact is Mayra Almanzar (305-573-1987) if anyone is interested.

22 Biscayne Bay - same area as Miami Bay Club. Double-closet in pretty large room, w/ washer+dryer in unit. Granite countters and cabinets all over the place (I like storage space). One parking spot provided, $75/mo for an additional. Pet friendly, and dumbells in the w/or room. Prices range from $1000-1250. Management appears friendly (she was bouncing around happily before we showed up - we saw her through the window). Again, driving distance to campus (no metro).

In Brickell:

One Plaza West Brickell - somebody visit this building and let us know how it is, please! We didn't get a chance, and our realtor said there weren't any open units (in her database).

Camden Brickell - apartment complex right next to metro and people-mover, with a Publix nextdoor. Pet-friendly with no monthly fee for animals ($500 one-time fee). Leases range from 7-15 months, with 14-15 months having the best rate. There are studios, 1-1, 1-1.5 and 2-2 available. The people seem very down-to-earth, which we liked... the marketing manager saw that we were laid-back and sat on the counter to talk to us in the show-unit. $125 app fee per resident (unless you're married) and $360 admin fee. Prices range from 900-1300 for studios, 1300+ for 1:1 (didn't ask about anything bigger). The building has the best w/o room we've found. Washer/dryer in unit. Pretty large rooms... the counters are not granite or anything, but the room feels more liveable (for the same price as the more upper-class condos around it). Quite a few med students live in the building. This is one of our favorites in Brickell, but the style of living might not be for everyone, depending on what you're used to / looking for. I'm willing to pay the same price for a homey feel instead of a big city high end feel. Free internet outside of your room, but you have to pay extra to get it in your own room. Water/electricity/heat/etc. not included.

AXIS on Brickell - another of our favorites in Brickell. This one is a condo complex, with prices around $1450/mo. Definitely more high-end, but still friendly. Washer/dryer in unit. This one is the granite countertop-wooden floor type. Rooms are pretty large, and the building is literally across from Camden/the metro.

Wind by Neo - do you like meditation rooms? how about gossamer drapes in all-white rooms? do you consider yourself to be a "chic young professional urbanite"? this place might be for you! ... Alright, seriously... the rooms are actually cheaper than any of the other Brickell places we found ($1300-1400ish for a 1:1), and the feel is very high-end big cityish. They have a racketball court in the workout room (yay!), but I felt the place felt a little stuck-up. Again, if you're trying for the fancy big city thing, this place might be a perfect fit. Granite counters, hard-wood floors, etc. I think internet is included in rent. Pet-friendly, and there may or may not be a size limit on dogs (we saw a big one!). Not right next to the metro, but definitely less than a 5 minute walk from it.

Latitude on the River - we actually liked this one a lot, but it's about 5 minute walk to the metro. Large rooms, with reasonable rent (the seller of one is asking $1550, but we heard one of the realtors in charge of the building say the seller would take $1450 for sure). Granite counters and hardwood floors, but friendly (not too showy). Internet and water are included in the price. Pet-friendly, with free parking spot included. I'm sure there is guest parking - there is also valet parking, and it may be the same thing.

Hope this helps some people! We're going to be watching AXIS, Camden and Seybold as our top three.

Thank you sooo much for posting this!

I 2nd that! Thanks a ton for posting it Kaiv, that's an awesome recap.

I'm making a list of places to check out before I head down, so that'll be pretty helpful. Now I just need to decide if I wanna look for a 1:1 or get a 2:2 and hope I find a roommate 😉

Thanks again for the help, see you in the fall!

does anyone know if miami is still taking students off the temporary alternate list? I fear that movement has stopped!

I am on the regular alternate list (interviewed in October). Do you think the office would let us know if movement has slowed/ stopped if we call. I noticed they generally do not like to give up info at UM.

It cant hurt to call if you do let others know what the admissions office said by posting it on sdn. That way others wont ask the same question.

I called the admissions office today to ask if the waitlist is still moving... essentially, the woman said that it has pretty much come to a standstill and it is hard to say if/when it will move again, because it depends if people drop. She said that in the past, there has been movement past this date, but very little. She also said that, at this point, the only thing there is to do is wait since they can't give us any detailed information about the waiting list (i.e. what we are currently ranked)...

A pretty depressing call...

Very Depressing Indeed seeing as I really have my sights set on Miami

Anyone filled out the "Request for Stafford Loans" form yet? I can't find the 2010-2011 version of the form only the 2009-2010.

Is this form up yet? I need to fill it out as well...

I'll call them tomorrow

Is anyone else here having difficulty downloading the Pulse PDF?

Nevermind! I got the Pulse to download using a different browser. Apparently, it doesn't like Chrome all that much.

They expect to have the updated Federal Direct Loan Request Form posted around 4th of July weekend.

They expect to have the updated Federal Direct Loan Request Form posted around 4th of July weekend.

Thanks for the info! I really hope they send out emails about which forms they'd like us to fill out and when... this is my first time taking out loans, so I'm a bit iffy on what I'm supposed to do other than submit the FAFSA.

To UM med students living in South Beach:

How do you guys deal with parking? Did you guys purchase a residential parking permit? If so, does this free you from having to worry about finding a parking spot in South Beach at night? I'm thinking about living here but am pretty worried about having to spend tons of time at night looking for a parking spot 🙁

Thanks!

Edit: Nevermind...I found some info and discovered that its not a big deal....

I just now checked my financial aid awards for the upcoming year via "MyUM" and discovered that all my awards have changed to the amount of "$0.00"!?! 😕

Anyone else have this problem?!

I still have no awards listed, so I don't have the same problem.

Are you talking about scholarships/school loans or the federal loans? You sure you selected 2010-2011?

Yeah, that kinda freaked me out for a second when I saw the same thing on my page. I called the financial aid office, and they explained that the dollar amounts will be zeroed out until you formally sign promissory notes and/or accept grants/scholarships. So no worries, they didn't take your financial aid package away.

Thanks!! Yeah, I freaked out when I saw that and tried calling the financial aid office but no one was picking up for the longest time. Finally, someone picked up and gave me the same info. I definitely can't cough up the tuition payment with my pocket money ha ha

All of my financial aid showed up again when I went to the federal loan website and filled out all of the paperwork they wanted. It's terrifying to know that on August 5th, I will be $26,000 in debt. Gah.

yea, and we're gonna have to revisit that every semester...:scared:

Well, booked my hotel for the 30th and 31st, have my car and boxes ready to ship, and have a lease signed and ready to go to move in on the 2nd.

First day of class is in, uh, 26 days.

Anyone living in a suburban-type area this upcoming year (particularly a place with a driveway)? I'm interested in getting a motorcycle this August and since I'm a fresh rider (just got my motorcycle license), I'd like to practice riding my new bike around in a safe, suburb prior to taking it down to my residence which isn't so great for practicing 🙁 (South Beach). It would be great if could store my new bike at a fellow student's suburban house/apartment for just a couple of weeks until I decide to take it down to my place 🙂....Thanks!!

For those of you accepted, do any of you know if anyone didnt show up for orientation today or was the full class present? thanks!
