i reapplied a bit late so i received and submitted my secondary this week and i received the complete email yesterday. however, the email says that reapplicants are reevaluated again for an interview. my question is, how long did it take to get an interview invite from your complete email?

I think I submitted in September, marked complete in late October and just received the interview invite the other day (I think 12/1) so they definitely made me sweat for a second b4 giving me the invite... hopefully since we are already re-evaled b4 getting the invite, that means we have a better chance of admission, but I'm not sure about that.

I just got the acceptance to ECU yesterday, but UNC is still my #1 pick and PROBABLY the only thing that could talk me out of the $9K tuition at ECU so I'm keeping my fingers cross for myself and for you!

Hopefully we will meet at orientation for UNC next August :xf:

Congrats BubbaChuck3! Did I do the math right that it only took 2 weeks for you to find out? That's awesome! I hope I hear something soon...:scared:

For those who were accepted, how long did it take to get your snail mail letter?

I'm still waiting on the letter. Just got the phone call.

And teddybeardoc yeah it was a little over 2 weeks...very fast turnaround.

BubbaChuck3,
I think we interviewed together, I give a hint: we went to the same undergrad. Congratulations! Wish me luck, still waiting (feels like forever). I am happy you have had such great success.

Oh Hey!!!! Goodluck! I'm pretty sure you will be getting the call soon. Thanks for the ride again haha.

I just marked an interview for Jan 5th YAY im so excited!! Most of yall have been interviewed I take it... any tips?

I'm IS (I hope...), 30 MCAT, 3.83 overall/3.83 science GPA's

Do yall know if after the interview they still consider your MCAT and GPA or is it more based on the interview at that point?

Thanks!!

The interviews are very relaxed (I talked with one of my interviewers about his cats) so just be yourself. The best piece of advice is to have questions ready for them that are specific about the school. They really want to know WHY you want to go to UNC so make sure your questions show that you are really interested in the school. Other than that don't forget to send a thank you note after and you should be fine!

I don't know exactly how it goes after your interview but I think the interviewers make overall recommendations on you and then when you come before the committee (every other monday) they consider your whole file (but I could be wrong about that). One of your interviewers sits on the admissions committee and the other is just a random faculty member.

good luck!!!!

do the sub-committees meet on the same day as the full committee meets?

from what I remember, sub-committees meet to discuss about their interviewees, and if you pass this stage then you get presented to the full-committee.. of course I could be completely off

So the sub-committee consists of our two interviewers? Seems like a lot of meeting....

i think it may be like... for the sub committee meetings all the interviewers (who have all interviewed more than one person) for one day or one week or whatever get together and lets say there were 10 people interviewed between all of them, they discuss all 10 and maybe the choose the two best and present them to the bigger meeting. the bigger meeting might then have the 2 best of 4 different sub committees and then they decide on those 8 people- either yes, back into the pile, or no (later on in like march i think)

i may be completely 100% wrong, but thats how it works in my head.

ps one more thing:

for yall who have been accepted, who is a non-traditional applicant and who isnt (if you dont mind answering)

i was looking on last years page and i got the impression that they like the non-trad applicants. just wondering if that seems to be a trend this year too....

I kind of doubt that people are compared to one another in the way that you describe (choose 2 interviewees out of 10). Instead I bet that if all people on a certain day were great, they all get through. At least that's what I hope.

could be... i guess we will never know...

i just base my thinking off of the fact that its rolling admissions and so if they dont pick you, you kinda stay there in the pile and they reconsider you the next round.

but yeah maybe they dont have a number quota... and that its whoever they really liked. but i bet that its never all of them... haha... but still there must be some sort of comparing going on... i mean if there are 10 ppl considered, at least a few have to be better than others.

my theory is supported by the fact that some people get called back within two weeks (ie chosen the first meeting) and some dont hear for 4 months but still get in.

Oh I see what you mean (I originally thought that you meant that those who didn't make it to the full-committee would get a straight-up rejection). Yeah I do agree that you can miss making the cut on one meeting, then be accepted a few meetings later. Not sure how the sub-committee/full-committee factors into all of this. This is actually the first time I've heard of the sub vs full committee meetings. Like you said, we'll likely never know. 😎

either way, going on what last years board looked like, no one here should be holding their breath because i was reading it and i really felt their pain.... some people interviewed in like october and didnt hear back until early april! 😱

Good luck to everyone applying this year and congrats to all who've gotten in!

I just wanted to let everyone know that they've given out approximately a third of their spots and will have given out one half of their offers before Christmas. Info from an Admissions Committee member

I am definitely nontrad and at my interview day, about half were nontrad. So based on my interview experience, it did seem to be the case that they were interested in people with other experiences, but then again, I haven't heard back yet, so who knows? 😕 It has only been a couple weeks though, so there is still hope.

I'm traditional, but I was thinking the exact same thing this summer while looking at last yr's thread. The demographics powerpoint for the class of 2013 lists the age breakdown of all the matriculants... Most of them were 21-22. The powerpoint's on the admissions web site under "our students."

I'm a non-trad. Woohoo, non-trads! I definitely got the impression that they really appreciated my varied experience.

Lol! Sorry I should have read that better. I didn't realize the post was addressed to people who had been accepted!

WOAH half by christmas!! im not even interviewing till jan... :/ i guess thats what i get for getting my app in so late...

anyone know how many ppl they are planning to accept this year? i heard rumors last year that they were going to increase the numbers but then not cuz of the economy... maybe theyll let in a few extras?

Just FYI regarding the main committee and the subcommittees (as best as I can remember):

The main committee is divided up into several subcommittees. One of your interviewers is on one of the subcommittees. The other interviewer is not on a committee; this person just submits some kind of feedback about you. I believe your interviewer decides when to present you to the subcommittee. Once you pass the subcommittee, your file is then presented at the next main committee meeting for a vote. I was always told that, most of the time, if you pass the subcommittee, you will pass the main committee. So I guess the subcommittee is the real hurdle. But this is all hearsay, so take it with a grain of salt.

I never knew this before, but there are a total of 8 medical students on the admissions committee -- two from each of the classes. The 4th-year students even get to do some interviewing.

I should clarify: it is possible that both of your interviewers are members of the committee. Both of mine were. But if so, only one of them will serve as your committee member; the other one will essentially just serve the role of a non-committee member and will submit written feedback about you. It is the committee member that presents you to the subcommittee, and if you pass that, then to the main committee.

I asked just that during my interview. Expect no increase in class size this year is what I heard. But that could've changed who knows.

I am hoping that many of our phones ring come next week. Think it's the last one before christmas?

Have any OOS been accepted yet?

If you have, could you share your stats.

I'm interviewing next week.

Good luck to all.

if i interviewed in late september and still havent gotten any word back..im assuming this probably means im going to be rejected at this point?

too early to send in a letter of intent? too late? should throw in the towel and start job-huntin?

no don't give up yet. it's still quite early for unc. some people i talked to interviewed in september but didn't hear back until march amidst making plans to attend another med school.

^ this...all but one of the ppl on my nterview day were accepted.

I'm OOS and I have been accepted. But it is not about stats. Especially after you have been invited to an interview. It is about how good of a fit you will be and other extrinsic qualities such as your interpersonal skills etc. Some may disagree but that is my opinion. Either way the acceptance rate post interview for OOS is relatively high so you already got past the hard part.Good luck!

Really? I'm pretty sure that the interview coordinator said that they have ~20 OOS seats (I guess that could mean they accept ~40 if the general trends are true here), and will interview 100-200 OOS people. The 100-200 is very vague but assuming that they will interview 150 people, that's not a very good %.... Of course she might have given incorrect info.

I have also heard that they allocate about 20 OOS seats. Can't comment on the number interviewed, however.

The acceptance rate for OOS is really good... IF you get an interview. There aren't many seats (about 25 I believe last year), but there also aren't that many OOS interviews given out. At my interview, my adcom interviewer said that your chances of getting accepted as OOS are as high as 40-50% once you have interviewed. However, your chances of getting an interview in the first place are around 3%, I think...

Well I don't know who is right given that I was told that they interview 100-200 people. More like 25% chance if that's correct. Oh well, it makes no difference. I'll just keep my fingers crossed! 🙂

Based on MSAR and USNEWS they interview around a 100 OOS accept 50 and 20-25 will end up matriculating. So there is essentially a 50% acceptance rate once you get that interview. Those are great odds once you pass the big hurdle.

does anyone know when they start meeting again? would it be the 4th of jan or will they probably wait till the 11th?

My understanding is that the next scheduled meeting is this coming Monday December 14, 2009. Do you know something I don't?

Just got the email...rejected pre-interview OOS. Oh well, good luck everyone!

Rejected. I was about to send them an "in-the-area" email too, no need for that now haha. Missing their secondary deadline by two weeks couldn't have helped either.

Good luck to everyone still in the running!

sorry i wasnt very clear... i meant after christmas break!

and sorry to yall who got rejected.. 🙁 but its like impossible oos they say.....

First rejection. Bye bye UNC thread.

Oh no that sucks! you're a genius so that means the rest of us have no chance...was this post-interview?

actually I don't feel bad for you cause you got into JH and WashU lol

I can't be 100% positive, but my best guess would be the 11th. At my interview, they said their winter break would be Dec. 18 to Jan. 5, which is a Tuesday.
