post. I got it too. Take it at face value -- UNC isn't a mind games school. You're continuing to be reviewed -- it's a status update.

wish they'd have sent me a better letter though 😛. Alas, back to the waiting game.

Agreed. 🙂 Maybe this will teach me to stop getting so worked up every other Monday...

got one of those emails too. not sure if i wanted to get it or not because quite frankly, i still am unsure what the heck it meant. it says that the committee "is reviewing" my application but no decision has been reached, so i suppose they meant the committee "already reviewed my file" and chose not to make a decision at this time but will look at it later. sucks...but i guess it totally could be worse...

AGREED. i would have preferred a 919 phone call last night.

considering they don't reject people this early, i'm thinking this letter means pretty much next to nothing.

well call me negative, but it at least means that we weren't strong enough to get in on the first look. depending on how many candidates are in that same boat, it could mean very little to not so good. but hey, let's stay positive or try to at least...right?

Hey everyone,

I got the same email. Based on how generic the email is and that it looks like it was sent to everyone who interviewed in the months of September and October, I wouldn’t be surprised if the committee has not reviewed many of our applications. I get the feeling that this email was sent to reassure us that the committee is working hard to evaluate all of our applications. At the end of my interview, my adcom made sure to note that the evaluating process takes time and is quite random. I really would not stress out over this.

I interviewed in September, and I have not received that email.

I haven't received the said email either. Possibly it hasn't been reviewed by the committee yet, maybe not even by the sub-committee... so the wait continues I suppose.

I didn't get the email either. Would someone mind cutting and pasting what the email says please?

Dear ilovepizza

We really enjoyed meeting you on your interview day!

We wanted to touch base with you again to let you know that the Admissions Committee is reviewing your application, but no final decision has been made. You will remain under active consideration and will be notified as soon as a decision has been reached. Unfortunately, because of rolling admissions, this process may not be completed until the spring.

No further action on your part is required except to keep your contact information current. Please note that it is not necessary to submit any additional letters of evaluation, as the letters that you have submitted to the AMCAS web site are sufficient.

We certainly do appreciate your patience and thank you for your continued interest in UNC School of Medicine

Sincerely,

Robert A. Bashford, MD
Associate Dean for Admissions

Ms. Randee Reid
Operations Manager
UNC Medical School

Those of you who didn't receive the email: when did you interview? It seems like those of us who did get it interviewed in late September/early October.

Just to corroborate the previous poster, I interviewed early October and I received the email.

I thought UNC didn't send out rejection letters until the end of the cycle after they determined the wait list.

so does anyone know if unc does send post-interview rejections before the end of the cycle? if they said that you should hear in 6-8 weeks it seems like they would be cutting people, otherwise over half the interview pool would not hear anything until the spring...

If it's anything like last year, be prepared to wait until May to get the rejections. From my experience from last year (personal, friends, and obsessive SDN checking last year's thread), they tend to make you wait until the end of the cycle before giving you a decision.

My understanding of the process is as follows: If you are a definite YES, they will get back to you pretty soon (after the first Adcom meeting after your interview). If you're a MAYBE candidate (which the majority are), they keep going back to your file and re-reviewing it until the end of April.... that means that there is a POSIBILITY that you will get a phone call after any Adcom meeting if they decide to accept you. I think very few (if any) people land in the definite NO pile that gets pre-interview rejections early in the year. Check last year's thread, but I'm pretty sure the waitlist decision doesn't go out until April as well (that's an email).

I landed in the MAYBE pile last year and I swear my heart skipped a beat everytime I heard my phone ringing Monday evenings around dinner time on the days the Adcom met. Sadly, I got the snail mail the first week of May with a rejection 🙁

Now if only they would send me an interview invite so I can go through this hell-ish process again... I swear, applying to med school must take like 5 years off of your life with all the stress!

Thanks, that was very insightful. Now I can hopefully calm down about UNC until the spring.

I wonder if they hold a lot of their acceptances initially like ECU?

ilovepizza - thanks for posting the email.

I interviewed mid-Oct but didn't hear anything. But I'm a reapplicant - so I wonder if I've even been reviewed, maybe they save reapplicants to the very end? I dunno. 🙁

I interview 12-18. Is the decision making timeline the same for OOS?

I'm thrilled just to get an interview. My dad went to medical school here and my sister just graduated from there. Blood runs Carolina Blue!

Hey guys... Apparently, I got in on Monday... Never got a call or anything, but the acceptance letter arrived via snailmail this afternoon. I know most of the adcom members are physicians and I'm sure they're all unbelievably busy people... Just posting to let every1 know that the phone call thing isn't the end all be all on your app status... Best of luck with the remainder of this app cycle!

Congrats! When were you complete? I guess now we need to start obsessively checking our mail boxes too! 😱

Lol, I don't think the no-call thing is the norm... No idea how often it happens? Maybe chubby or another ms1 on here can shed some light for us

I interviewed in mid-sept so it took about 9 weeks ttl (in-state)

Hey hubison-

out of curiosity, who was your adcom member?

Accepted today!!! Snail-mail, no phone call either, OOS, interviewed beginning of october.

Weird, that is really odd they sent a letter this week when they met at the beginning of last week. How far do you live from NC?

I think they're slow in getting the letters out. I got my phone call last Monday but the letter didn't arrive until Saturday and I live within a 1/2 mile of campus so it's not like it had far to go. Not that I'm complaining or anything 😉

Well, congrats everyone with acceptances.

But are there any other folks out there still languishing in pre-interview limbo?

OOS, still under review here (at least, according to Ms. James).

Would any OOS who have been admitted share their stats?

I live in the northeast. My letter was postmarked november 16th.

Ditto. Anyone know how late UNC's interview season lasts? I think I might send them an "in-the-area" email, but I won't be there until February.

i think they interview until the end of february. A friend of mine had a feb 24th interview last cycle.

Quick question for those accepted in-state....did you receive that letter saying you meet in-state tuition before getting accepted?

I wanted to see if getting that letter had any correlation with getting accepted, hmmm

I did, but I also know of people who got the letter and are still waiting for a decision.

I got that letter last year after I scheduled my interview and (obviously) did not get accepted 🙁

I think I actually got that letter a few days after my interview and it came to my parent's house (permanent address in NC) and my mom about had a heart attack b/c she thought it was an acceptance or rejection  parent's are funny.

I know!!! My mom got the thin envelope (with the in-state tuition eligibility letter) - said she contemplated opening it for 10 mins, since she thought it might be a rejection haha Thank goodness it wasn't... the waiting continues 🙂

Have people started getting these in-state letters this year? How long after the interview did you get it?

Also - what do the acceptance letters look like when they come in? I heard last year it was a thin, small envelope - is that the same this time around?

Does anyone know if the committee will meet this Monday (that would be 2 weeks from the last meeting) or if they push it back a week because of Thanksgiving?

Last years thread had someone get accepted the Monday after thanksgiving. So, I'm going to assume that they are meeting. I like that their meeting schedule coincides with my days off or work so I can drink away my neuroticism.

Large thin envelope with UNC Admissions in the corner. But lots of people get a phone call first so be on the lookout for 919 or private numbers on caller id.

Alright everybody - I'm withdrawing. I got an OOS interview invite, but never scheduled it. Hopefully this will free up a spot for someone else who really wants to go to UNC. Good luck all! :xf:

Congrats on your acceptances. Goodluck wherever you choose to go! 👍

Tomorrow is an adcom meeting monday! Dun dun dun....

I pray to God today is my day. I could use this massive change in luck.

Has anyone had the guts to call the admissions office, and ask how many offers they have given out so far?
