I'M IN! Holy moly! When I got the email saying "Admissions decisions for the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have been made for the 2010 entering class.... Thank you for your interest." I was like ahh... nooooo

Then I started screaming "WHOO" I must've sounded like homer simpson (ironically - I'm celebrating by watching the latest episode of the simpsons...)

SO FREAKING EXCITED! Loved this school!

😀😀😀😀😀😀 POWER OVERWHELMING - can't contain it. I want to go out on the street and do a happy dance

Dude, congrats! You definitely deserve it.

wow look like penn is knocking down a lot of the sdn hot shots. weird i suppose.

I'm not a hotshot (WL at JHU and WashU, rej at Harvard) and I got accepted to Penn, so your comment makes sense.

I guess I need to start a Baylor v. Penn thread now. 🙂

well being a naval officer is pretty unique. good job!

I think this is yet again my top choice. 4th time I have said that in the past 2 weeks...

Congrads to those who got in, and waitlisters don't give up hope.

waitlisted tier 1, gonna withdraw. Good luck everyone!

Congratulations man. You definitely deserved it.

Accepted also! Thrilled. I think this is my top-choice school, though I am hoping that revisit weekends will help me make a final decision.

looks like I'm on the list of waiting. oh well.

congrats everyone!

I called the admissions office and they told me that they would have give them out early april. Please don't think I'm a gunner.😳

People like you who "gun" to help out others - we like people like that! 🙂 wish more gunners were like that

Tier 1, which sounded pretty promising until I viewed this thread. Congrats to everyone who got in. Very surprised at some of the people I've seen waitlisted. Duke acceptance is providing some much needed ego support.

👍

Tier 1 here as well. At least I can now make my decision to Pritzker without any regrets!

Congrats to everyone accepted today. I'm an MS1 at Penn and love it here. Feel free to PM me or ask the thread with questions about the school, the decision making process or why Lin's food cart is the key to life happiness.

I do love Lin as well. Her ability to stay happy and energetic with a thousand hungry people every day is mind boggling. Any sense of how many people come in off the waitlist? A small minority of the class?

FAQs on the status page say prob between 12 and 50. And that they waitlist 400 people (both tiers).

So considering I wasn't invited to second look and didn't get a "highly interested" tier 1...which I assume went out to at least 12 to 50 people...should I just move on from it and forget about it? I did a quick peruse of last years thread and couldn't even find anyone who came in off the waitlist.

There was a separate waitlist thread last year, so try looking for that.

Sorry, I don't have any numbers or really any inside source of info about the waitlist. From talking to classmates, I definitely think there was movement for my class, but I have no idea how much.

OK found it. They gave the sense about 30-40 students most years. And that most people ended up hearing a few days after May 15th, but a few in late May and earlier in June. I'd assume given the waitlist info provided... about ~400 students accept a place initially on the waitlist, but many will end up dropping their spot before May 15th (down to about 100 by May?). Penn removes those who have withdrawn from considering and then goes to the remaining applicants to fill the class.

There were definitely applicants accepted from the Tier 1 only waitlist last year. Those who were successful seemed to be the ones who wrote additional LOI's and continue communication with the office. Good luck everyone! And again, congrats to those who got in.

Yeah, I got the sense from scanning over old threads that a Tier 1 waitlist wasn't hopeless. And I think my student host said that ~1/3 of his class came in off the waitlist

I think they waitlist more than that...but only 400 accept a spot on the waitlist. There are many awesome people (like waiting2exhale) who get into places like Harvard and forget about waitlists at other schools. Congrats to all again.

Doctorno, very impressive! 30 MCAT and an acceptance at Penn. You must have some awesome uniqueness to your application.

CONGRATULATIONS to all those accepted!! 🙂 what a relief and joy after so many months of waiting!!!
...now, i wonder... how many of you who have been accepted will actually choose to attend Penn? that will be the most determining factor for how much movement will actually happen within the waitlist!

Waitlist Tier 1 and withdrawing. Congrats to all who got in and good luck to all who continue to wait! 😀

Anyone know if Penn prefers LOIs via email or snail mail? My initial thought was snail mail, but they have the whole paperless process, so I'm not so sure.

Balls, Penn. Just...Balls. I thought I interviewed fine. My application was good enough for the other #3 school. Why not good enough for the one that isn't in Missouri? Balls.

I don't think it matters much -- pretty sure the snail mail just gets scanned in and put into the same system online.

Congrats to everybody who got in -- hope to see you here in the fall(/preview)!

For those on the waitlist, if Penn is your top choice (and it should be!), hang in there. From what I've heard, there's not usually a ton of movement (1/3 of the class sounds like an overestimate), but there definitely is some. Updates can't hurt, and definitely, definitely come to preview if you were invited. But know that, even if you end up somewhere else, things will work out -- you're still going to love it, and you're still going to be a doctor (not so comforting now, I know, but it's true).

Yeah I think it's probably more along the lines of 10-20% of the class (~15-30 students maybe). But, given that not everyone accepted from the waitlist enrolls, there's always the possibility more people are offered a spot than will matriculate. Most schools try and prevent this, (aka. it's good to let them know if Penn is your first choice, but really...only truly if it is your first choice).

Given that last year...only ~215 people were accepted (after waitlist movement) for a class of 165, there is at max 50 students taken off the waitlist assuming Penn accepts a strict 165 students in it's initial acceptances (which isn't necessarily true).

I think with every waitlist...the approach I'm taking at least is to stay on, write letters to the right people, but not really not expect any more acceptances at this point in the process. Move on with other schools you've already been accepted at. If you get in...great! If not, I'm sure a waitlisted student at Penn has many other great options.

Waitlist Tier 1 yesterday. PENN is my absolute top choice and I would love to go there but wasn't expecting to get in so I'm not heartbroken. That being said I still want to do everything in my power to get in. Just found out about their being a Tier 1 Highly Interested and a Tier 1 Invited to preview weekend so I am a little discouraged. If anyone has some advice on what I should do/realistic percentages a PM would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

It's official for me - pretty much 99% chance I'll be at UPenn in august - see you guys there!

anyone get a scholarship?

or anyone know when we will hear any financial information?

Some scholarships may be handed out with the official acceptance letter...others will be notified sometime between April and June-ish (according to the website and other SDNers)

Has anyone's official letter come in the mail?

Wait, which one is Lin's?!

Lin's is the cart right next to the arches that lead to Stemmler/the East Quad entrance. They sell salads, steaks, sandwiches, etc. and they're scrumptious. It's right across the street from Magic Carpet if that gives you another reference.

In fact, this just reminded me that the weather is good and I can finally start going to the carts again for lunch (my research building seems so far away in the winter).

Oh, the one with the shamrocks on the sign... Righto. Never been. But I try to eat a diet of entirely ethnic food. 🙂 All the staff at my last rotation site in the burbs couldn't stop talking about my daily lunch of Ramyun and Nori.

The admissions office said nothing would be handed out until April. Do you know someone who has gotten one or is this an assumption?

If you're into the ethnic food trucks, have you tried Yue Kee on 38th between the Locust Walk bridge and Walnut? Sooooooo good.

Post being waitlisted, I would like to write a combined update letter / letter of interest to a school. Does it make sense just to write to the dean or also to my interviewers. Or should I send the same letter to each interviewer and the dean. Or should I address, the dean and my two interviewers in the same letter and send them all a copy. Or should I send each an individual letter?

Thanks
