Hey guys!! Sorry Im out of the country ad havent been on here. Got an email FRIDAY 1/15 and the PACKET TODAY 1/20 saying that I have been ACCEPTED!!! I'm pumped. Good luck to all still waiting.

Hi everybody, I just received an interview invite (so excited!) for Feb 3 with Paul Herron, Phd, and James B Latta, Phd. Has anyone interviewed with either of these guys? Especially curious about Dr. Latta as I can't seem to find any info about him on UT's website or the internet at large. Thanks!

hey everybody,

I'm on the waitlist here, but recently was accepted into my #1 school. I'll be withdrawing my app from here so good luck to you all!

I got notified last saturday that I have an interview on the 3rd. I would be greatly interested in the number of spots left as well. Luckily, I am in the Teach for America program and will defer for a year even if I get in, but it would be really great to know that now. Congrats to those who have gotten in and good luck to the others.

Does anybody know if the committee meets tomorrow? Also has anyone who previously received an "undecided" letter earlier in the process been admitted, or is that pretty much a wait until April for the waitlist" letter?

second that

Apparently they have more applicants this year than they ever have. They are just trying to buy themselves some time by sending out those "final decision hasn't been made" letters. I got one as well.

I interviewed 1/5 and was originally sent the deferred letter that people have been getting. I received an acceptance letter this week, however! Just wanted to let people know. I'll definitely be going to UT next fall- very excited! 😀

Does the deferred letter actually say the word "deferred"? I just want to get the different syntaxes very clear before I am on the receiving end of something. Anyone have anything that they wish they had done before interviewing there? Hope everyone isn't too iced in.

For anyone considering the new one year special masters in pharmacology that UTHSC is now offering, the current group of students are going to interview on Feb 8th. If many of them get accepted, then it might be good idea for some of us that dont get in to look at this program. I will try to keep up to date on what happens.

Edit: incorrect date for interviews

Does anybody know when they stop interviewing? Do they go into March??

Thanks!!!

From what I understand, they do interview though march.

Has anyone else received acceptance after the "final decision has not been made" letter?

I talked to Nelson Strother yesterday and he informed me that they are probably going to be conducting interviews well into April.

Nelson said that they send out a letter before they send an email. Did those that were accepted get an email or letter first? He also said they will send them out a week after meeting, and I really hope that is the case.

Just trying to get this thread moving to kill some time while waiting for notification. I guess this being the only school I applied to makes me pay a little more attention.

I got an email from Diane saying my acceptance letter was on the way. It was a week after the meeting to do the day. I got the acceptance letter about 5 days after the email. Any reason why you just applied to one school?? The thought of that is so foreign to me haha GL! Hope you bat 100%!🙂

I am doing a two year teaching program, so I will defer if I get in anyways. UT is my top choice, so I figured there was no reason to apply to schools that I did not want to go to if I have two years to get in. I will apply to more next year if UT does not work out this year. It made sense at the time.

I didn't get an email at all- just a letter. It says congrats on the outside, so it's pretty obvious what it is! Good luck 🙂

That makes perfect sense why you'd only apply to UT lol Cool stuff! Sounds like you've got some awesome plans ahead of you. GL

Just a note, I was in the first cycle, so they could have been doing things differently then. Three of the people I interviewed with got emails but maybe they're doing it differently now. Anyways, Good Luck guys!

I received an e-mail before my acceptance letter....my understanding; however, was that the whole "sending an e-mail" thing wasn't common knowledge... like Diane liked to keep it on the DL maybe?? Eitherways, I think some people receive and e-mail first and others get the letter first... just depends on the week! (Atleast from what I can tell by reading this)... GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!~ 😳

has anyone that received the "final decision has not been made" letter gotten accepted or should we expect to be waitlisted?

Yes. I got the first letter about a week before the accepted letter.

in a couple of weeks and I just got done reading the interview feedback.

I'm kind of freaked out after reading how many ethical questions were on there and the actual length of the interviews (60+ minutes?!).

I've had two other interviews so far and at both schools it was extremely laid back and comfortable. I'm not really getting that vibe from UT... am I wrong here?

The interviews are pretty laid back. My first (non-academic) interview was very easy and relaxed. It did last over an hour, but I really did not notice. My academic interview did not flow quite as well, but the interviewer was still very nice. From what I've heard, everyone has had cordial interviews. My visit was a great day.

This might already be mentioned somewhere on here, but what is the difference between an academic and non-academic interview?

Is one of the interviews just all about grades/MCAT etc?

Technically yes. One interviewer does not have any of your grades/MCATs, and they are your personality, character, etc. interview. The other interviewer may ask similar questions, but they will have access to your grades and such. It depends on your interviewer because mine were not that different from each other.

My "personal" interviewer started off by saying -- "just to let you know I don't have your scores." We talked about my major which was non-bio, traveling, my motivation for medicine etc. It felt comfortable, but I didn't think it was super smooth since I was pretty nervous and it was my first one.

My "academic" interviewer didn't ask about my scores at all. He threw ethical questions at me left and right, but it actually was "fun" in so much as I got to think about hard problems and work out solutions to them best I could "on the spot." I think there's no need to prepare specifically for these questions. A better thing to do is to research what's going on with the healthcare debates (and what do you think are positive/negative aspects), religious views that clash with medicine, etc. Also think about "what would I do if..." I think if you think through a couple of those, you'll be good to go- they're not looking for a right or wrong answer... just to see that you've thought about the issues that will arise when you become a physician.

That said, the interviews (especially the second since I was much less nervous and really excited by the hospital tour) are very conversational. They're also really open about the pro/cons of the school. Expect the classroom tour to be much less exciting... the clinical tour more exciting. There was a lot of walking- it was okay for me because I wore flat shoes. My overall impression of the school at the end of the whole interview day was much much more positive than going in (though it was my number 1 school already).

My advice- find the bathroom early. If you need to take some breaths before your interviews, just take a trip to the bathroom and get yourself together. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! This makes me feel better about it, although I am still dreading the ethical questions.

...anybody heard any news since last adcom meeting Friday 02/05? Nothing new here...

Nope. I interviewed the 2/3, and I have not heard a thing. Letters are supposed to go out tomorrow. I had a fingers crossed for an email but oh vell. Good luck to everyone finding out soon.

On the website it says they offer a limited number of full ride scholarships---interview 15 and distribute 5. Has anybody been contacted for interview yet?

I am not sure but I think this has already happened. Scholarship interviews are done in January I think.

According to the website these interview invites are sent out in "late February" and the actual interviews are in March. Now whether or not that is true for this cycle I cannot say. I was accepted in October and still haven't heard anything about the full-ride scholarship interviews.

I interviewed 2/3 and got a letter 2/13 saying that they had not made a final decision. So I guess all those presented at the 2/5 meeting can be on the lookout for a letter in the mail. Let the painful waiting continue.

Are they not sending out emails to let you know a letter is on the way anymore?

I received an email after first sending Diane Harris one. I don't think that she sent them out to everyone.

UT is very odd about their scholarship presentations. From what I understood from them, they use the scholarships to keep people in-state, and therefore, usually interview people with multiple acceptances and try to award scholarships by the time they're hearing back with financial aid packages from other schools.

i have been waiting to hear about any money awards as well as the full-rides. Has anyone gone to the interviews for them? Anyone got any info on scholarships?

I don't really know too much about UT memphis and I have an interview coming up.

I've tried doing some research through the schools website, MSAR, etc...

Can anyone give me just a few pros/cons to the school? It would really help me out, thanks!

Got an email today about the full ride scholarships. Says the top 15 accepted applicants have been selected and you'll get an email today if you're invited with instructions to confirm for either March 28 or 29 for your scholarship interview. The rest of the info is just the same as on the website.

Pros
The school and hospital system is enormous. Because of this, you have the opportunity to see a multitude of pathology that you will not be able to get just anywhere. Also, since it is a public hospital with its location, you get a little bit more autonomy in your clinicals than you would be able to get away with a some of the other private systems. Also, the UT-health science center is large and gives you a lot of interactions with other professional students--you're not isolated. Ideal for trauma and strange disease. Night life is good if you know what areas to keep away from. Focus-clinical medicine. Very inexpensive.

Cons
With the exception of the children's hospital, most of the facilities are very old and at least not aesthetically pleasing. Last time I heard, they were still using paper charts and had not switched over to more efficient electronic patient record keeping. Location is very rough. Not much emphasis on research and don't set aside anytime in your schedule for it. All top residency programs and specialties require research so you may have to work hard to make space for it.

Hope this helps! I could tell you more if you want to PM me or if you have specifics.

Does anyone actually get a rejection letter as their first contact post interview here? It seems like everyone is either accepted or deferred/waitlisted. When I spoke to Nelson Strother at my interview he said that after the interview you will be accepted, rejected, waitlisted, or deferred (seeming to say the last two are different fates) but these options don't appear to be born out by the experiences of the applicants represented here on sdn. It seems as though there is no difference between the deferral and the waitlist, and I haven't heard of anyone being flat out rejected right after the interview. Aah, to truly know the mysteries of the adcom... Thoughts anyone?
