Still no letter here.

I emailed Diane yesterday, and she responded today with a "YOUR LETTER IS ATTACHED" email. Except that my letter was not attached.

So the wait continues... :scared:

I don't even know why I'm so worried about it, it probably won't tell me much.

Congrats Flash.

Is that top 25 alternates or top 25%? Either way is great.

Also, how did your experience this year differ from last year (i.e. your feeling after the interview and with talking with the committee and any differences in the waitlist letter or what not).

Top 25 alternates.

Not much changed from year to year. I think I interviewed a lot better. And added a publication. I didn't receive any recommendations for my applications either year.

Well I just got an email from Diane, with my letter attached (waitlist, big shocker there).

I guess I will call on Monday and see if I can figure out my position.

Got my position as "the lower half" which is probably a euphemistic way of saying near the end of the list. It seems they give the best news they can and lower half sounds a lot better than the 4th 4th. I'll stick around on the alternate list and see what happens. Statistically I think I may be struck by lightning while winning the lottery when my acceptance call comes. Good luck to you all.

Got mine also, I'm on the middle third. Like you said though, that's not really a great place to be sitting when the waitlist has 245 people on it. I really need my other 2 waitlists to come through...

I called Nelson a couple of times today, but he didn't pick up or it went straight to voicemail. So what are everyone's plans for next year if this doesn't go through?

I'm going to try to get a job with UPS.

Talked to Nelson the other day and I'm in the top 50!

He said they've already made about 9 offers off the list.

Let's hope it keeps moving:xf:

Good luck everyone

I talked to Diane last week and she said I was in a really good position that the person who was in my spot was given an offer May 12, which is ****ing today. Do you think I'm in the top 60 of the waitlist or am i doomed?

does anyone know how many have been accepted off of the waitlist so far? hoping to hear some good news in the coming weeks. good luck to everyone!

according to bananastand (in a previous post), 9 spots have been offered off the waitlist this week 🙂

I missed a call from Nelson Strother yesterday (!), and since I was in the boonies where my phone didn't work I didn't get the message til this morning. So now the waiting game begins til Monday. He left an ambiguous sounding message just asking that I call him back. Any thoughts on what this might be? Folks who've been accepted off the wait list, was your notification by phone?

Thanks! 😱

Any updates on where the list stands since FlashMD heard 25 Monday morning? Congrats BTW!

So TheFlashMD, did you get in? If so congrats!

That mystery phone call was an ACCEPTANCE!! Got an email from Diane Sunday evening telling me my acceptance packet was in the mail. What a blessing!

I'm currently holding an acceptance at Quillen. Anybody know how long we have to respond to the acceptance offer? And anyone else trying to decide between these two great schools? I'm having a hard time choosing bc they excel at such different things. Thoughts?

Nelson told me on tuesday I was just inside the top 3rd (the first 80 if there are 240 wait listers). I am not sure of my chances. I do not know if this takes into account the 25 waitlisters already accepted. I am hoping that about 20 of the top third will get accepted somewhere else for my sake. At least that will put me in the 60-65 range of those accepted off the wait list. My wife is an M-3 and she says all the people she knows were all wait listed before being accepted.

It does occur to me that being in the top 1/3 can mean different things to different people. 245/3= 81.66 or roughly 80 or 82 depending on the persons rendering. This is not so good a number. However a more mathematical 3rd 245/3.3= 74.24 or between 74 and 75 is a better number considering that roughly 1 in 5 people who are accepted do not matriculate for one reason or another.

Well, top 1/3 is by Nelson's Mk-1 Eye-ball estimate as he looks at the spreadsheet of the applicants and their relative position. So top 1/3 means the top 80-82 students. Also, I agree, a number of candidates offered admission will probably turn it down b/c they already matriculated at other institutions, so they might offer admissions to the top 1/3rd in order to pick up the 60-65 they usually take off the wait list. The other question (and it may be me reading too much into it) is they offer 60-65 acceptances. Does this mean 60-65 matriculants or just 60-65 people are extended an offer?

Well the 60 to 65 would refer to the number of students necessary to fill the open slots, if they have to get to student #240 on the list to fill the slots then that is what they will have to do. So if 20 or so people on the alternate/wait list turn down the acception for whatever reason then they will have to keep asking through student #80-85. This assumes they need the 60 or 65. They actually extend acceptances to nearly 200 people before utilizing the wait list and if they get their 165 from that 200 then they will not need to ask anyone from the wait list. Hopefully this answers some questions.

Well I think ETSU has a higher standing overall than UT. You can look it up on US News and World Reports. However, Memphis offers better clinicals. You can get the best of both worlds by attending ETSU and doing your 3rd and 4th year rotations in Memphis. So you will attend the better school and get better clinical experience.

I'm not positive but I think there are only a few transfer spots between 2nd and 3rd year. The couple that are available are usually given to those with a significant reason (think family needs or spouses career) for moving. Just wanting a better clinical experience would probably not get you a transfer spot.

I think you mistake me, I am not saying that you can transfer. If I wanted to I could do all my 3rd and 4th year ROTATIONS in say Chatanooga, or some other place. In the same way, even if you are attending ETSU you can do all your rotations in Memphis. I am not suggesting transferring from one school to the next. You pick where and when you do your rotations (clerkships). So you can choose to do them in Memphis and get the clinical experience while still attending ETSU which is considered by most lists to be the better medical school than UT Memphis.

Thanks VitalArmor, that's my breakdown as well. You say go to ETSU then do clinicals in Memphis - how would I do that? wouldn't I have to transfer to UT to do my rotations with them?

Yes, you could do an away rotation or two in the UT system, but at ETSU you would be required to do your core rotations in Johnson City.

At UT you could do your core rotations in Memphis and some select core rotations in Knoxville and Chattanooga (these locations don't offer every specialty). These are still in the UT system, thus you are still technically in-house. Just a different location.

Hope this clears up some confusion.

Talked to Dianne today, she said that "30-odd" people have been offered admissions (as of this Tuesday) and that most people offered admissions have accepted - My analysis is if you're not in the top 1/4th or so, chances are looking rather iffy of getting in.

Have you decided where you'll be matriculating? That's such a hard decision because they're both great schools. Also, if you don't mind me asking..how long do you have to accept the offer if you're off the waitlist?

Thanks for the update!

I have a general question..is anybody here on the waitlist at UT, but accepted to another school, started filling out their loan apps? Or are you just waiting to see if you'll get offered an acceptance to UT? I'm just wondering because it's getting late and I'm scared that I will have trouble getting loans before classes start..

For what it's worth, Medgal01, accepted students at UT have yet to receive any news on financial aid as well due to adjusting to the new SAFRA regulations passed with the health care reform bill.

Actually I am only clear on how UT works. You can do every rotation in chatanooga-now that they have a psych rotation available (yes this means core rotations and elective rotations-I know because my wife is an M-3 and in rotations at UT). I was unaware that ETSU forces you to do rotations only in Johnson city, I had not heard that. You may want to ask.

Any update on waitlist movement or acceptances offered?
Well bananastand, if eqiuos is right you might not have any trouble getting in this year. If they take 60-65 people from the wait list and you are in the top 50 the math is with you. Always has been. lets say that out of 30 people 25 have accepted. If every person they ask accepts from now on they could get all the way through 70 on the wait list. Just let us know when it happens. I would be curious to know how many people have accepted by the time they get to you....might give us suckers lower on the list some more false hope to cling to🙄

Ha well thanks for the encouragement vital...i'll be sure to post anything i know. let's just keep our fingers crossed.

Thanks everybody for your helpful responses. Quillen does require cores to be done "in-house" so to speak, that's why I was curious about VitalArmor's comment.

Medgal, Diane told me I have 2 weeks from the day I receive the acceptance packet, but could have extra time if I need it.

Hey thanks for the info Eilonwy, now I know how long to sweat it out haha. Also I have been doing more research on which school is better. Most rankings that you dont have to pay to look at just compare MCAT scores and research. I can tell you now that UT has the better average MCAT scores than ETSU but if you ask me that is not a reason to pick UT over ETSU. Also the "free" rankings show that UT has more or better research but this has nothing to do with quality of education or anything that might make UT the better school...unless you specifically want to do research or get an MD PhD. I will tell you that some of the more competative specialties want to see if you have done research. Otherwise, ETSU has one of the better primary care programs in the country. This fact alone puts ETSU on ranked lists that UT is never mentioned on. I can send you some links if you like.🙂

Thanks Eilonwy, I appreciate it. Also, if you can check your PM messages, that'd be great.

I was actually just thinking about that. I wonder whats going to happen. Either way, thank you for the info.

It seems that there hasn't been a lot of WL movement this past week. I wonder if there will be any significant WL movement coming mid-June...

When I last spoke with Nelson he said there are usually significant movements on the wait list the first week of june and the last week of June into the first week of July. After that....who knows? Also it is the first day of June that UT contacts other medical schools of students already holding acceptances (at other schools) and lets them know they are about to offer an acceptance. This promotes movement on the wait list I assume. 🙂
