25%-40% Looks like you can't figure it all out by yourself

I am sorry man, the numbers do not seem credible. Each year, over 5700 people applied and only about 750 people (numbers from the VCU website) were offered interview. Assuming that they have already accepted about 180 applicants and about 170 people were either rejected or decided to withdraw post-interview, pre-decision, So that left about 400 people on the waitlist. Each year, they will accept about 400 people (true for 2007 and 2008 entrance classes) that means there are still about 220 acceptances to be given out. 220/400 is slightly more than 50%. Anyone want to verify my calculations?

Don't get your hopes up too high here. WH-Cook said they're interviewing more people than they did in 2007 and there will be 80-85 OOS seats. If they've interviewed 400 from out of state, and say 1/4 of them rejected, 1/4 of them withdrew, and 80 have been offered....(400 intervewed-85 accepted - 200 decline/rejected = 115 on waitlist.

if even half of the 85 OOS students turned down their acceptance that would give you 42 seats to be distributed amongst 115.

I haven't heard a single medical student or admissions person tell me that half the people on the waitlist would get accepted. And if it did happen, this would be the first year.

Even if we assume that the first part of your caclulations was right (115 OOS waitlisters), the numbers still do not add up. There would be about 200 OOS acceptance offers (true for 2007 and 2008, and not sure about 2009 entrance class). 200-85=115 which is exactly the number of OOS waitlisters you calculated and which is also 100% OOS acceptance rate.

So we have to assume that there are a lot more OOS waitlisters (230 people), because I think you overestimated, by a lot, the number of people who were rejected and who withdrew post-interview, pre-decision.

Apparently you are too dumb to comprehend that I estimated the 115 on the wailist to be those who were NEVER accepted and are also hoping for an open seat. My 200 estimate listed those who were 1)rejected or who 2) declined (either an acceptance or consideration for waitlist).

Let's be honest...25-40% acceptance off the waitlist is realistic compared to your over 50%

Yes, I have also heard the same thing and I was told that the class would be expanding, so I guess there would be more acceptances too. For all practical purposes, my estimates were based on previous years (2007, 2008, 2009). Even if we take extra interviews and extra seats into account, I think the acceptance of overall waitlisters would be closer to 50%.

I heard the same thing also about 900 people being interviewed, which is far more than the 734 they interviewed in 2007. Even if you take into consideration they added 16 seats since then, it's still statistically harder to be an applicant this year. The prestige of the school has also gone up in the last few years, so count on more students retaining their acceptance.

Exactly, what I was saying is that your 200 OOS applicants who were rejected or withdrew post-interview, pre-decision is way too high, and the remaining 115 OOS waitlisters were too low. I will let people decide who is right in this case.

I repeatedly stated that my calculations were merely speculations that needs to be verified since I am in no position to know the actual numbers.

I have yet to hear one admissions person or medical student claim the waitlist movement is THAT dramatic. Yes, it moves a lot due to the amount of seats but never has it been 50%. Just looking at the forums and numbers from previous years...you're definitely looking at 2 in 5 or less getting off the waitlist.

That may be true, but math speaks itself. If you look at my calculations, you will clearly get something around 50%. Unless you have any problems with my calculations, I welcome questions because I know it is, by no means, perfect. Until then, I will assume that it is around 50%.

um, you guys...all this speculation and rough math is absolutely worthless. nobody can be even remotely certain how many of us will get off of the wait-list, nor is it worthwhile to argue over whose rough guess is better than the others. i know SDN is full of neurotic tendencies, but this is way too much. take up a hobby or something.

I remember ppl getting rejected post interview but it was before the acceptance release dates and it was a good sign when you got the hold for committee decision status after interview. Or something like this, I don't know from personal experience as I was accepted a week after my interview with no status update before acceptance.

play video games and work out 12/7. trust me, video game helps alot cuz it kills ur brain cells while exercising just tires you out so u can't think. alcohol and substances kills too much so i wouldn't recommend it. 😛

I carry on as usual: go to the gym, cook lavish dinners for my family (when the mood strikes), keep up with my part-time job, do a bit of volunteering on the side...anything to get me out of the house and keep me away from my comp and SDN😉

I was rejected post-interview on March 19. Not sure how many dates they had after that. Mine was the last MD/PhD interview date.

looks like if we're coming off the waitlist, it'll be about 1-2 weeks after may 15...there's 12 on your list, 10 were on may 19...

..so is may 19 like an unofficial 4th acceptance date?😀

Is anyone still on hold here post interview? My status says my file was put on hold after discussion at committee and has been that way since i interviewed Jan 7th. Does that mean a rejection or what?? I would like to know but it seems this school is slow to let you know what is going on. I did not get put on the waitlist last notification date but did not get a rejection either for all the previous notification dates.

What I learned is...never hope for any date! Just keep yourself busy and it'll come eventually...Every time I expected to hear something it was always late

while in theory i agree with you 100%, for those that are like me and need nothing short of some serious intervention to stop thinking about it, i was told that the waitlist will start moving right after this thursday lol

I totally agree with you 100%. I also think that the waitlist will start moving sometimes in April, possibly right after the Apr 15th submission deadline.

lol we've had a shortage every year since 1960's... what do we do? we import foreign docs! why not just do what every USA students want.... accept more!!! we should form a lobby group called angry-waitlisted-premeds lol

I agree, political action committees, organized special interest groups, and lobbyists are the most effective ways of having your voice heard by legislators. Apparently 13% of residency positions in the United States go to foreign medical graduates, which leaves 87% for the rest of us.....it'd be fine if we had a couple thousand more residency spots lol. Unfortunately, with medicare funding being the backbone for many residency positions, it's unlikely that we'll be seeing the expansion we need. It seems as though anything lawmakers do to "fix" our health care system doesn't address the deeper rooted problems. Gov't likes to place bandages on problems that need stitches....(or a miracle).

Right now, i think it would only be thru status change but later on (late june/july?), i've heard they make phone calls close to when classes are about to start.
