I think GR is a hidden gem of a city and it's more than ok with me if not too many more people discover it and ruin it. But if you agree not to tell any of your NYC/Boston friends, I'll let you in on the secret. You've got some very wealthy families/companies who have dropped a ton of money here, planting cultural seeds such as Meijer Gardens (sculpture and intimate outdoor concerts in the summer), DeVos Place (music and theater), VanAndel Arena, (large venue concerts, minor league hockey, novelty shows), VanAndel Museum (currently featuring Bodies Revealed and the DiVinci Surgical Robot- you won't get to touch one of these until after you're out of med school, but for $8, you can go play with theirs!). The downtown, besides being home to Seechia, has the medical mile, which is rapidly developing GR into a medical destination. I know, sounds funny, but the point is that with the amazing VanAndel Research Institute and all of the hospital expansion, we're seeing a huge influx of medical/science professionals who, by the way, also like to do things and have fun in their spare time. They have minor league baseball where from the worst seat in the house you can tell whether the players shaved or not. Pick up 4 seats, dogs and Pepsi and burn all of $20 to do it. Berlin Raceway for motorheads, 45 minutes to some of the most spectacular sugar sand beaches in the world, many fantastic bike trails, casino 20 minutes from downtown, decent snowboarding within a couple hours, and IF you insist on doing the big city thing, Chicago is 3 hours to the Loop. All of this and people are nice, traffic jams are nonexistant, it's safe, you can actually find parking, and it doesn't cost you your firstborn to do any of it. Nothing against E.L., but you're right, it is a fairly typical Big Ten college town....yawn. If you choose to attend there, it's ok by me.
Hope this helps you.
