Everyone, try (I know it is hard) to not count days since your interview and compare to others who interviewed before/after you and analyze whether you should hear back now/later. The admissions committee doesn't review people in chronological order and applications are commonly shelfed for later re-review after an initial look. It means nothing if you don't hear back with the first folks who interviewed on the same day.

Example: I interviewed on the same day as two others from my undergrad. It was Halloween. The first person heard back on November 4th, the second was just before Christmas and the third in the middle of January. We all got in. Don't over-analyze this. Another person from my undergrad interviewed in early November and got waitlisted two weeks later. There is no pattern, so don't go looking for one and driving yourselves nuts.

Good to know. Thanks 🙂

Anyone hear anything yet? Today is suppose to be a notification date...

Has anyone who applied back in July heard nothing? My status has been forwarded for preliminary review since then.

been under review since early august. no word yet. I'm OOS. I don't expect OOS to be heard from in awhile.

Thanks, just making sure others hadn't heard. There are OOS people who have been invited to interview earlier in the thread, so I was just curious.

I attended an interview on oct 18th and there were quite a few OOS applicants. However, we were told that we were only the third group of interviews (I was told that they have around 20 groups), so theres plenty of time.

For those of you who have been accepted, have you started to look at apartments in the area yet? I forget where they said most of the med students lived when we were on the tour, the one place I found that got good reviews was Waters Edge Apartments.

Same as the people above - I'm IS, was complete in early September and still haven't heard anything. Judging by the threads from the last few years I'm pretty sure I've been rejected already. MSU doesn't reject anybody IS until well into spring, because they figure they can contact you at the last minute if an interview slot opens up even though the chance that will happen is << 1%.

Look at last year's thread - a huge number of people (IS and OOS) who were under review since July/August/September ended up getting rejected in January, February, and March. I think maybe 1 person who hadn't heard anything by March ended up getting an interview invite.

Just got an interview invite today for 12/2!!! 😀

Any advice from those that have interviewed already?

Application complete on 9/21.

Just got a call from the dean tonight....ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got a call from the dean tonight....ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats!!! I'm still waiting for THE call...

Seeing how I have no updates on my status page, it looks like I'm going to have to wait until the next notification date. :scared:

Placed on hold, for the next 3 months. This is getting too real. 😡

got a phone call from the dean as well yesterday.
I am so happy.
YEAH.
first offer of the year.
got the email today.

interviewed on the 25th of october and offer on the 2nd of November.
SUPER FAST

I have heard that MSU is a school that tends to deny interviews to applicants who are 'too much above their averages' because it looks bad on the school when they offer acceptances to people who do not enroll. Does anyone have any credible information regarding this situation? I am an OOS applicant with a 3.7 and a 35Q (average at MSU is 3.5-3.6 and 30 P). Since I am OOS and above the averages, I am wondering if I have been thrown into this unfortunate pile (I submitted my secondary in early September and have heard absolutely nothing since)...

I wouldn't worry yourself over it yet. It IS still early in the interview season, so it could be possible that they just haven't gotten to your application yet.

Though it is a state school and they naturally favor in-state students, I'm not sure if it's a trend that they "deny" interviews to high-stat applicants. 35R, 3.9 here, and I got an interview and acceptance. Don't lose hope yet 🙂

does anyone know if they accept letters of interest? the website says all additional materials will be discarded, but does that only count for app materials such as LORs and such? I really want to let the Dean know that although I am OOS, my wife is from MI and we plan to stay and practice in MI if accepted to med school up there.... and how they are my #1 choice overall...

They don't reject applicants for having "too high" of scores. Plenty of people in my class have numbers better than yours.

They may however not be that excited about applicants who seems to have little interest in community service. They really emphasis volunteerism etc.

They do not accept letters of interest before you are offered an interview. But you can also try e-mailing to them to the admissions office anyways as this might have changed.

Congrats

- To those accepted, feel free to PM me with any questions.

I'm new to this, so I don't know what PM means, but do you know what the apartment complex is where most students live on the East Lansing campus? I keep hearing about one that is really close and a lot of med students live there, but I haven't heard the name. Thanks!

I just meant to message me with questions.

In Lansing, most people live in Berrytree apartments. Its decent student living and very close. Glennwood apartments are a little bit closer and also reasonably priced. You can easily walk to school every day and save some money

In Grand Rapids, parking is a pretty serious issue. Most students live close and try to talk to Secchia. There is Boardwalk apartments, Plaza Towers, Top of the Hill apartments, and plenty of rooms for rent in the Heritage hill area.

You want to live further away there are some nice complexes as well. Such as Briar lane (where a lot of the residents live) but your gonna have to pay to park near the school. If you live with another student you could probably just split a parking pass and carpool.

Hope this helps. In past years there has been some form of facebook page for your class where people will post their living arrangements and roommate requests.

well i am OOS and i have a near 4.0 gpa with lots of EC and 1.5 years of research experience 35 mcat (LOL).
i don't think it's true that they don't interview people higher than their states, but I DO THINK ITS TRUE THAT they review things very slowly.

hi guys.
question here.
I got offered from MSU.
I am wondering now what I should be doing with my classes at my undergradaute insitute.
Can i just do nothing and bomb my classes (c+) all of them?
so on...becasue i want to kind of shift my life around a little and see if i can squeeze out a paper publication or something.

Bombing all of your classes sounds like a brilliant idea, since f---ing up your education is far less important than a publication. I think you should go for it. I bet MSU would really like to see that.

I was going to say "don't bash him." lol but yeah i would rather retain my acceptance to medical school rather than getting a publication. try balancing those two. if not take the acceptance and do well in your classes

I interviewed on Thursday and have to say that MSU-CHM has become my first choice school. Easily. I was very impressed. For those of you who have heard back since interviewing, how long did it take? Has anyone not heard back post-interview?

EDIT: I went back and read all of the posts previous to this. It seems some people haven't heard back over a month after their interview.

I interviewed on the 14th of October and was accepted on November 9th. They have rolling admissions though and I'm pretty sure they don't let you know when exactly you will go to committee, so if others who have interviewed before or after you hear before you, don't worry! Sorry its so hard to predict!

well i am asking this question just in case for the worst case scenerio. when i really really have to choose, i will know how to choose and what to choose and predict some of the consequences.
I am not a slacker.
i am top 5 in my biochem program in ubc. despite my years of research experience (2 years now), i have published NOTHING.. NOTHING....
it hurts...especially when you pride yourself as a biochemist...and other classmates of yours keep getting publications.
I know one guy who has 15 publication as of today...and he just graduated last year. I mean wtf...he has 1 PNES paper and 1 Nature.
He sucks at studying..and i would like to think that i am smarter and i am also hard working..just that my experimetns don't come around.
I have been having extremely tough lucks in all my research projects..you wont believe it. sigh...
it's sad...and i don't like it.

btw, send the office an email

they said

CBC+ graduation..taht's it.

i mean for example, just this weekend, i read 12 ****ing papers and wrote about them in 2 days..i am awesome. LOL. usually would be studying...LOL

lol i just realize that i came off as very mean and defensive..sigh..sorry. I have not been sleeping much in the last 2 days. please excuse my manners.

Does anyone have the link to the secondary application?
I already paid the fee but the email to my secondary seems to have become inactive and they haven't emailed me back in a week about this problem. =(

Could anyone help pm me the generic login for it? Much appreciated!

This is directly from my email invite to complete the secondary:

"To complete your Secondary Application, please go to the CHM Application Process web page (http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/applicants/chmais.php) and follow the instructions for setting up your CHM Applicant Information System (CHM AIS) account and completing your Secondary Application. This site also contains detailed information on our application process."

I think that link is what you're looking for.

Got the call today!! Accepted!!
My first one too! I feel like I'm going to die of excitement. :soexcited:

Congrats to the people who have been accepted so far. If you were accepted could you please list your stats and if you are IS or OOS. I'm trying to get an idea of who gets accepted this early in the process. Thanks!

is there a certain day that they send out interview invites?

Oh sorry I misread your post. I'm not sure if theres are set dates for interview invites.

The dates which were posted are for acceptances, not interviews. There aren't official days when interviews are sent out.

I feel very fortunate to say that I recieved an acceptance voicemail yesterday! My stats:

Interviewed 10/14 - Accepted 11/9

IS, 29Q, 3.6 cGPA 3.6 sGPA.

Variety of leadership, volunteer, and research experience that I believe pushed me over the edge.

Good luck to everyone on here. I'd be lying if I said MSU was my FIRST choice, but I really enjoyed my interview day and it's fantastic to have the weight lifted.

so my friend got the status change hold for interview.

What does that mean? Does that mean if you get that you have an interview or will most likely get interview? or do people get rejected who get that status? Does it mean pre interview hold?

Thanks.

"Your application may be placed on HOLD FOR INTERVIEW DECISION. It is very common for applications to be held for an interview decision, for comparison to the larger applicant pool that evolves over the year. We receive newly verified applications from AMCAS through January; therefore, most applications that are held for an interview decision will be reviewed again in February 2011."

from their website

@guguDOC. Last year I was placed on hold for an interview and was later rejected without an interview.

P.S. My gf is Gugu lol

Accepted 10/18, IS, cGPA 3.54, sGPA 3.27, 35N

Good amount of community service/hospital volunteering, over 3 years of research experience, and a variety of other extracurriculars.

Loved the school--likely to matriculate here next year!

so we might be seeing each other. 🙂
Congrat to all the acceptances.

Ok I'm sure if that's what the website says she could read that herself. But I was hoping to get more information like from those who were on that status before. Like whether it translated into interview or was a hold like pre interview hold at GW that could result in mass rejections.

If any of you know the answer to this let me know.

Some people with this hold later get interviews, many do not. More don't than do. It does mean no interview invite will be coming until at least February. That being said, many of my classmates were interviewed and accepted in the spring, so don't take it as an automatic rejection.

Many people's statuses will change to this in the coming weeks. Keep in mind that we stop interviewing for nearly a month between the middle of December until the middle of January.

Thanks, but no offense but didn't you read my username before you wrote what you did? Because you completely butchered it.

it is not gugu. It is Guju.

Yeah sorry about that, I guess I was typing without thinking. And no offense really means to take offense. With that said, I take offense. You don't have to take out your anger on me because I made one small mistake scrub. 👍

I wasn't so much as angry as annoyed. but its pretty moot point.

Well sorry for answering your question and annoying you at the same time. You just seem bitter because your not getting the results you expected this cycle. I have been down the same road as you, and I would like to say that after a year of waiting, being annoyed by such technicalities will not get you closer to your dreams. Keep up the hope and everything will fall in line for you. But if I am wrong and everything is fine for you this cycle, I do not understand why you would get annoyed so easily. Anyways, it's friday...time to get liquored up.

wow

This is starting to sound more less like the MSU thread, and more like the Harvard.

To the person obsessing about publications. Just make sure you keep above a 3.0 this semester. I wouldn't stress about publication in non-medical related research.

Best of luck to those accepted!

1 reason to pick MSU above every other school in the country

2 months OFF during your 4th year to interview for residency. 4th years at other schools right now are dealing with request for time off, taking make up days of call etc just to go on interviews. Not me!

whoa whoa whoa. I don't know what your problem is. I got a bit annoyed, that is no means to start acting immature and start attacking me.

Secondly, if I was bitter I'd not be helping the people in the forums remaining in the pool of applicants at schools I'm rejected at like GW. I'd not be willingly relaying what my medical student friends have shared to me to them if I was bitter towards them. I'd not have helped people by passing on the tips my friends shared with me about their interviews at certain schools like BU to other interviewees if I was bitter that they got an interview and I didn't. Please don't make such weird assumptions and blow my words out of proportion.

I don't have a problem with you. I was just slightly annoyed by the misspelling of my name because people keep doing stuff like that or referring to me as a guy even as I've clearly stated that I'm a female. its just annoying at times.

Stop over blowing things out of proportion.

yeah Cal, guju has been on sdn for awhile. pretty nice to everyone. can't hate on her! she was just slightly annoyed b/c you did some misspelling. No need to bash people especially on the internet yo. Let's just all be peaceful.

I think we're all just a little stressed out from this process. Lets all try to get along. 🙂

Wow thats awesome! Do you know when accepted students find out which preclincal campus they've been assigned to?

I am currently a senior and in the middle of the 2011 application cycle. I completed my secondary in mid-september. My application has been under review since October 1st. How long would you expect to wait? I know that my applications only weakness, though a significant one, is the gpa.
