Does anyone know the criteria for the research ranking anyways? And what would be the cause of such a huge drop from last year?

I'm interested as well. I had always thought that it correlated pretty well with NIH funding, but I don't think that OSU had a decrease in funding in 2010 (in fact, I thought it had increased). Not interested enough to pay the $20 to see all the scores, though.

No call here either. Interviewed 3/9/11 and no status update either. what's the deal?

Admissions said they made no calls yesterday. Apparently AMCAS was down for a couple days and Capers did not receive a list of phone numbers to call. Hopefully they'll get to it soon though!

maybe it's number of projects or NIH funded professors etc, either way I really am hoping you guys arent making medical school decisions based on research rankings...

I have to admit that I have never paid the rankings much mind...I like OSU for a number of reasons and none of them have to do with rankings. Nobody has to tell me that the school was the same yesterday as it is today (and will be tomorrow!)

That being said, I think this big drop in rankings is going to be a rather large elephant in the room come Second Look Weekend. Quite a bit of Dr. Capers' intro had to do with OSU's rapid ascension in the rankings and his goals for OSU's ranking into the future. I have to imagine that he is rather disappointed and wonder if he is going to bring it up...or will someone ask him during the Q&A on Saturday?

There isn't a whole lot that could change my mind about OSU after my interview yesterday. Had a great time and the faculty/ administration is committed to their students, and the students appear to be committed to the unified goal of a thorough medical education, so a silly ranking wouldn't change my mind

Agreed. I loved OSU, and the USNWR rankings won't change that. But it is a double edged sword, when you highlight the good rankings as much as they did. It'll be interesting to see how this is handled at second look.

I wouldn't be surprised if OSU bounces back into the mid 20's once all the construction and new faculty recruiting are completed.

I have no intention of making my decision based on rankings and didn't even know the ranking of the school when I went for my interview. That being said, OSU mentioned rankings more often than any other school that I have interviewed at or visited.

It's true that Dr. Capers focused on the rankings, but who could blame him, the rise in rankings was pretty damn impressive.

Too many schools really fluctuated in rankings this year. Something changed in US News formula.

Does anyone know the criteria for the research ranking anyways? And what would be the cause of such a huge drop from last year?

An explanation of how USNWR rates medical schools according to research (and primary care) characteristics can be found here: http://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/articles/2011/03/14/medical-school-rankings-methodology-2012

I think the largest factor in OSU's descent is probably due to increased funding and overall research improvements at competing schools rather than an issue endemic to OSU. I'm willing to bet that OSU's research capabilities indeed improved per Dr. Caper's wishes, but that the other well established and already heavily funded schools simply outperformed themselves compared to the previous year, while some of OSU's medical school competition secured more funding than OSU to climb the ladder.

But, as alluded to earlier, unless you're aiming for a highly competitive, research-oriented residency and career, I wouldn't worry about the rankings. They're otherwise arbitrary in the grand scheme of things. Just study hard for your USMLEs and you'll be fine.

Status update this morning + no call last night = deferred.

For those who want to submit update letters or LOIs, is it best to address these to the Dean of Admissions or the Director of Admissions?

Sorry, RookTookIt, hopefully the WL will clear for you.

So I was looking at the difference in methodology between last year and this year, and all I was able to find was a change in research activity weights. It used to be that 20% would be based on total research activity and 10% on research activity/faculty, now it's 15% total research activity and 15% activity/faculty. Don't know how much of an effect that has... meh...

Hey guys, sorry if this has been posted elsewhere and I missed it, but can anyone give any insight into the OSU interview? I tried to find the MDApps Interview profile but failed 🙁. I'd just like to know if it's more on the technical side, with questions on future healthcare in the US, or if they lean more towards ethical dilemmas, or if they are pretty general, getting-to-know-you kind-of deals. I know you normally have one interview with a faculty member and another with a student. Any other insight would be appreciated! Thanks again! (And good luck to all of the WL-ers; keep your chins up!)

I just read on the SUNY Downstate thread that in New York you need 12 months of residency for in-state tuition, but the paperwork must be done 6 weeks before school starts. In other words, you would need to start a lease on like July 1 in order to claim residency for your second year.

Does anybody know if this is the same time frame for Ohio? Any M2s who have done this have any info?

I'm pretty sure that's the case. http://registrar.osu.edu/Residency/Guidelines.asp search under "independent"

Yes you HAVE to be resident for 12 months, it's a lot of very strict rules, not flexible at all, but easy if you follow it correctly. I would email sam matheny for details

I was wondering if anyone would have any idea of how many spots are left in the class at this stage in the game. The school must be still interviewing around 40 applicants a week, but I was wondering if anyone had heard how many spots are actually available. I interviewed on Monday and some of the other applicants and myself were discussing this.

Well, if you look at Dr. Capers interviewing tips, he says that if you are invited for an interview the seat is yours to lose, so I have to take it that they are interviewing you for a seat.

Translation: if you
get offered an interview, there is a chair in that school’s first-year medical school class with your name on it. Based
on your performance in the interview, you will either claim it or give it away. With that in mind, here are some tips that
I think will be helpful to you on your upcoming medical school interview.

Somebody in my group asked about that during the talks in the morning. Basically, they said that there IS a seat for everyone, BUT there are fewer seats than in the beginning of the season so they may be a little more stringent about giving them out. So everyone has a chance, just not as high a chance as earlier in the season.

Good luck!

Thank you for this. And thanks RookTookIt - both helped with answering my question.

So do all of you really spend the summer between 1st and 2nd year in ohio? That's kind of a bummer...

what if you purchase a home in OH, but are not there over the summer. Does property ownership essentially indicate that you are a resident?

I don't see why not, they can't prove that you weren't there? And you are paying property tax on it, I'd ask sam matheny to make sure though

Do any of the current students know how Match Day went?

I know OSU can only provide for one additional guest, but anybody have experience bringing two guests? I would very much like to bring both my parents since they were both instrumental in getting me to where I am today. Would I only be able to bring one parent to an event? Could I bring both parents on the tours?

You can bring one parent to the meals, but tours and meetings should be OK for all

Do any current students know how easy it is to defer matriculation once you have been accepted? Do you need a really great reason like a fellowship, or is just wanting to travel in order to learn another language good enough? Also, I am fortunate enough to have been offered a merit scholarship... would deferring or requesting to defer jeopardize that? Thanks in advance for any help

Even if someone on this forum told you that it was not possible, I would still go ahead and ask the school itself, why risk it if this is something you really want to do?

Yes very easy! almost any reason you can take a deferment for as long as it's not just taking a year off to travel and relax. But I have no idea about the scholarship though

Decision Monday:xf: !! Good luck everyone who interviewed last week!

Hey, My wife and I are considering moving to Columbus early, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea/possibility to do research over the summer (before the first year of med school). Has anybody done this, and is there any funding available for it? Who would I want to get in touch with? Thanks for any help.

I am a non-traditional student, re-applicant. My interview is coming up and I am totally nervous. All I can think is that they are going to tear through all the weaknesses in my application. I know that once you get the interview, that means that they want to get to know you, but I just can't wait be done with it! 😎 Anyways, I was wondering, is there another Second Look date? The one I saw was supposed to be March 18th. What about applicants who get in later? Anyway, good luck to everyone who has an interview coming up. Wish me luck! I am excited, scared, frazzled, terrified, happy, optimistic, and ready to GO!!

i'm pretty sure march 18 was the RSVP deadline for a guaranteed spot at the april 8-9 second look weekend. remaining requests for attendance will be based on availability.

good luck on your interview! i found it to be pretty laid back, and the interviewers were really great.

So... the current facebook *page* for OSU class 2015 is a little bothersome because we can't see who else "liked" it. Would anyone be interested in starting a group, where we can see who else will be in the class?

Deferred...Kinda figured it was coming being this late in the cycle interviewing...bummer. Anyone know when they make decisions on all of the deferred applicants / when their deadline for decision is?

Interview tomorrow! I don't think I have ever been more excited for anything in my life. Do any formers interviewees have some wise words your willing to share? I've got my shiny shoes ready to go...

My interview is on Monday the 28th and I'm coming from Florida. It will be 700 dollars cheaper if I can reschedule my interview to Wednesday of that same week instead. Do you think that would be frowned upon for trying to reschedule? (I'm not the richest person lol)😕

I'm sure the admissions office would be more than understanding, especially given that your reasons are financial. I wouldn't sweat it, I'm sure they've had plenty of reschedules for various reasons.

They are cool with rescheduling, but I called last week, and the only opening was April 18th, so they may not have openings. Good luck!

I'm also curious about the Match. Does anyone know if OSU's match list is floating around? It didn't seem to be in the 2011 Match thread.
