I say we meet at Ohio Union off High st. It's close to the better off-campus sort of things, plus you get to see the newest of our buildings. What kind of stuff did you absolutely want to see?

That sounds good. It looks pretty far away from the Renaissance hotel, which is also pretty expensive. Is there a better hotel that is more central to everything? If I stayed at the Renaissance, is there a bus to the union or would I have to take a taxi?
There's nothing in particular I want to see. I'll probably want to grab a bite to eat eventually. Thanks for offering to take everyone around.

I just booked another hotel for the first night.
Which hotel are you staying at?

Any women interested in sharing a room on Thursday?

Just jumped on Buckeye Link to see if there was any financial aid news. No news on aid, but they do have estimated cost of attendance listed for next year.

$72542

Obviously that is for out-of-state. Is anybody who follows this thread a current student who was honorably discharged for the military? I see on the registrar's page that qualifies me for C-4 residency. Anybody have an experience with this? Who should I talk to during second-look weekend to make sure I get in-state tuition?

I've got a pretty awesome 06 Civic that I'd be more than happy to pick anyone up in. haha. The taxis tend to be expensive and I don't recommend taking the COTA (city) buses. the CABS (OSU) buses are safe but they don't head downtown. The Varsity Inn (http://www.varsityinn.com/) is pretty close and probably cheaper. There is a Fairfield Inn (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/cmhsu-fairfield-inn-and-suites-columbus-osu/) that my girlfriend's parents like to stay when they visit. If you're bringing family they are more than welcome to come along on Thurs. night. I have Anatomy at 830 Friday morning so it won't be an incredibly late night for me, but we're college kids so i've no qualms about 6 hrs sleep before anatomy. haha.

You're awesome! I would love a ride from the airport if it isn't too much of an inconvenience. It turns out there is another person and her fiance on the same flight so there's 3 of us getting in at 3:30.
I think I'll book the room at the varsity inn. It's the North one, right? Don't worry about a late night--my flight leaves at 6:00am and I'm sure I'll be drifting off early. I'll pm you my information so we can plan.

How about if anyone is interested in doing something as a group on Thursday, pm me with your contact information to ensure everyone who wants to come is in the loop about where we're meeting and when and what we're doing.

I'm flying out from Utah (BYU) and am excited to meet all of you this Friday!

Any other Utahns planning to attend?

I'm also from BYU but won't be able to go because of another second look weekend. I'm looking pretty hard at OSU, though!! 🙂

Excited for a second look at Ohio State. Loved it the first time.

Hey all,

I was accepted to OSU back in November and have narrowed my selection down to here and WVU. I will make a final decision within a week of receiving financial aid information, so I will know whether I am going here or to WVU by the third week of April, if the schools stay on schedule. I am unable to attend the second look weekend, but really loved the school. As school gets closer, it's occurred to me that if I do end up going to OSU, I'll need roommates, and I feel disadvantaged since I won't have the opportunity to meet anyone during second look. What I'm looking to get into is a house somewhere on campus. I come from a big family and spent all college as an RA living on a floor with 30 other people, so the prospect of getting a single or double apartment doesn't really suit me. I haven't really looked into anything out that way yet, but what I plan is for a house that can hold 4-6 people. If you would be interested in this kind of living arrangement, or know others going there who would, please contact me at [email protected] so we can discuss particulars, etc.

Thanks!
Brad

Has anyone else experienced a long time between hearing back from the admissions office after submitting updates? I've even left them a phone message to call me back  I'm sure they are just busy but I guess I wanted to know if anyone had short turnarounds from the office?

Weird. I did, too.
I called and the woman "Name I can't remember" said that a lot of emails from @yahoo.com/@gmail.com/etc... get filtered out, for better or worse. I re-sent mine from my @school address and then called to confirm and they sent me an email back. I guess they do super serious spam filtering there.

Hmmm well I'll wait until they call me back because there is no spam filter for voice-mails! haha. Hopefully they will call back soon because I have deferred status and I need to make sure my updates get in there for further review!

I keep wondering if updates and LOI's really do help and tip the scale in favor of people who write them vs. not write them. The fact of the matter is that people get off the WL who write them and people get off the WL who do not write them. I don't think we will ever get the answer, and I question anyone who says that they got off the WL due to writing a letter or LOI. You just don't know. I am also starting to wonder if Adcom tosses these letters or really does not consider them in a file because they are bombarded with them. One might argue that the reason they are discarded is that it is no longer objective material, what I mean is that if you have had an interview then you had your shot to get all the material to adcom and discuss your strengths/weaknesses, this stuff that comes in after the fact is just addon stuff. Not sure I am getting my last point across, but still wonder if LOI's do any good. This post not meant to discourage anyone from writing letters. Good luck to all on the WL.

meh, I think it helps in one way, if you've got to people with the same score post interview, and one has a letter and the other doesn't, then the one with the letter *might* get it.

I think it is an interesting point, however, there are no facts to support it. Perhaps it makes one feel better to write a letter then not writing a letter.

of course it matters, but it depends on what you say in the letter. ie if you just said I love the school and I would go here in a heartbeat etc, then that's just gonna be stacked on top of your file, whereas if you sent a letter saying I just finished a research thesis and was published as first author, that's gonna carry some weight

Since you are a Med Student, I would defer to your comments, however, most people are not just saying "I love the shool and it's my first choice". I would think they get lots of letters with updates on research, experience, etc. Perhaps you are right. Best of luck to all on the WL.

I was told by a member on this forum familiar with OSU admissions that LOI's are not read/considered if all they say is that you would really like to go to the school etc.

However, if there are significant updates like transcripts, activities, or publications then I would imagine those should be considered especially for waitlisted and deferred applicants

Another note:

I just got off the phone with Flo from the admissions office asking about the updates that I sent in last week and she said that they are slammed with Second Look Weekend and they will get to all email correspondence and updates next week!

you would be surprised, but yes good luck WLsters

This place kicks ass

amazing weekend!

I actually have the opposite opinion after the second look. Mostly Columbus really turned me off. I will be declining my seat, hopefully someone who really wants it will take my spot! 🙂

I have seen people posting about the waitlist in the past few posts... is there an actual waitlist or do you all mean deferred status?

If you actually mean deferred status, could someone tell me when Ohio will actually have a waitlist?

Yeah, this place is amazing! The leadership is top notch and they are recruiting some great faculty. This weekend confirmed everything I was hoping for. I liked Columbus but not sure what to do for housing at this point.

(Also, Gordon Gee was hilarious)

I went to school in a city that proclaimed to be one of the most livable cities in the nation, but it's actually in terms of stability, health care, education, population density, etc... Although the city I've been in for the past few years wasn't insanely exciting compared to others I've visited, I've still been able to find a great balance between having fun and focusing on my education (while ALSO saving a ton of money compared to NYC and Philly). I think columbus is a great city to start our medical education since they still have a nice variety of ethnicities and cultures. They're also the only level 1 trauma in the area so I feel as though we will still get to see interesting and exciting cases while on rotations.

Personally im incredibly excited to attend OSU! I've been blessed with options between here, a philly school and a new york school, and I choose OSU. More so for my mental health during the first few years and also for the opportunity improve myself as an applicant for residency. We have so much more free time to do other things than just studying during our afternoons/evenings! i'm in LOVE with the 8-12 schedule for the first two years.

Okay, I'll admit that maybe my decision is minimally based on the fact that i may have developed a crush on Dr. Capers. hahaha (that wont last long) but really, he's THE MAN. its really obvious the time and effort put in to recruiting amazing people to be part of their academic community, so I see this as a very good option. To be in an environment where your professors are excited to be teaching what they know to the docs of the future is very comforting. Also the personalities at OSU cannot be beat. I love the faculty.

Go Bucks! I'll see you guys in August 🙂

OSU! Is the best...Outstanding Students and University ;-)

I love everything about this school. The faculty are super approachable and genuinely happy. The students are intelligent and have varied interests (community service, research, global health etc.) Dr. Capers, Dr. Blyden, Dr. Lucey, and the entire leadership make an unbelievable team.

I had a great time with the incoming students and will most likely be coming here. After I left I was pretty sold. I agree BoogieBee. I am loving the 8-12 and the array of activities one can do as a student there. I left feeling like everything is "Bigger & Better"at OSU...if you will.

And the glass gym did it for me! BEAUTIFUL! Congrats to all those accepted! And for those waiting to hear back, good luck!

I had a GREAT time at OSU during Second Look weekend! I'm on the verge of withdrawing all of my other acceptances, but I was hoping to get a little more insight from some current students. Thanks in advance!

1) The past two posts have commented on the 8-12 schedule of IP. I was wondering, how often are there afternoon events? Of these afternoon events, how many are IP specific and how many bring together both IP and ISPers (i.e., you would have to attend regardless of path)?

2) Where does everybody live? I tried my best to look at apartments but only had a little time on Saturday and few places were open on Sunday. I'm torn between close to campus (The Meridian) versus Upper Arlington/close to the OSU airport (maybe ever Hilliard). Would students care to comment on pros/cons? The Meridian has horrible reviews online...any horror stories? Anybody live farther away? Do you tend to feel disconnected with classmates if you have to drive to go out? How about getting to campus on gamedays from the surrounding area (I'm from out of state)?

I'd really appreciate as many responses as possible and thanks again!

I'm glad you like OSU!

1) 8-12 is awesome! The only afternoon required class is CAPS, which is just once a week, it does take the whole afternoon. Otherwise, other optional things that occupy afternoons can be: volunteering (community project), preceptor ship (1/month), learning community dinner (1/month), Free clinic (whenever you sign up, there's one for every night of the week, diff patient populations), Trinity (ultrasound thingy), suture/phlebotomy (sp?) workshops, any of your interest group meetings/activities, research, shadowing etc (btw you will find that about 50% of your classmates don't even go to class anyway, it could be you too!)

2) I live on campus close to the school, I prefer it that way, but ppl live off campus ie in Dublin or Hilliard, UA etc, I think either way's fine, both has advantages and disadvantages, I just like being able to go home and relax/nap during the day, some ppl just like driving to school and study all day and go home which is far away to get away and relax, either way's fine, whichever one you prefer is good.

hope that helps!

Good luck to those of you who are anxiously waiting for a phone call tonight! I'll be in your shoes next Monday.

Thanks, mb1985! My interview is actually Wednesday, but I can't wait to get there.

Good luck, DrSuperD. I hope you get the call!

Has anyone heard of post-interview rejections being sent out? I have only heard of people getting deferred status, including myself....

So does anyone else still need to take biochem?

Yes there have been rejections. One of my friends was rejected post-interview.

Just got my financial aid package...would have loved to attend but unfortunately the costs are too high for me 🙁. I will withdraw soon - I hope one of you guys gets the spot. Good luck.

Did you get an e-mail about your financial aid package or did you just check buckeyelink? Sorry you won't be coming. Good luck to you too!
