We have some news to share with you that will hopefully provide you with more flexibility as you pursue your medical degree.

Due to a high volume of individuals who have indicated that they plan to attend The Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSU COM) beginning in August 2011 as part of the Class of 2015, OSU COM has decided to provide an incentive to encourage some students to defer entry into the College of Medicine until August 2012.

If you are willing to defer your matriculation into OSU COM until August of 2012, we will provide you with a scholarship equal to free in-state tuition for your first year in medical school at OSU COM (approximately $34,000, but in any event the full in-state tuition value in the Fall of 2012), so long as you continue to meet the technical standards for conduct required of students in OSU COM. This tuition-only scholarship will be in addition to any previous scholarship dollars OSU COM has awarded you. If you decide to take this offer to defer your matriculation until August 2012, it is expected that you will be committed to matriculating at the OSU COM.

Deferring medical school entry for a year may give you some time to rest after your rigorous undergraduate curriculum or pursue other interests. We hope that the offer of a full in-state tuition first year scholarship will help you make a decision.

These scholarships will be offered up to 50 individuals, with scholarship awarded in the order in which the responses are received. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please respond promptly by email only to [email protected]. No responses will be accepted after 5 pm Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, May 12, 2011. We will notify you promptly by return email if you are one of the scholarship recipients.

If you are not interested in this offer, you do not need to respond to this email.

If you have questions about this offer please contact Dr. Patricia Blyden, Ms. Sharon Agriesti, or me by calling (614) 292-7137.

Thank you for your interest in the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Can someone post the email message OSU sent about deferring?

I saw that you posted after you were accepted...did you not get the e-mail? I thought everyone who was accepted received it.

I was just wondering if anybody here on SDN did/will take the offer? I would think it would be easy to find 50 students, but I am not really sure.

easy?!?! i really don't think so for two reasons...

1. The majority of students I talked to at second week have already taken at least one year off, which I am pretty sure for most people is enough time off already. I myself can't wait for this year to be over simply because I feel like time off is a time taken away from the profession I actually love and want to be in.

2. 34k, as I mentioned before, just doesn't make much sense because it takes one year away from your time as a physician (during which you will be earning around 100k or more per year). Sure it would be nice to graduate from med school with only 215k in debt as opposed to 250k in debt... but again if you think long-term, you would get more (financially) out of becoming a physician a year early.

Oh man, I'm so conflicted on this deferment offer. Initially, I thought it would be perfect. My fiance is finishing up his masters in the fall, and so we'd have to be apart for that whole semester if I started in August. I know a lot of you might think it's no big deal, but I'd be lying if I denied it plays into my decision. I was also thinking that waiting one year wouldn't be too long to secure 34,000 (not to mention I'd be making money until then). The other plus is that I would be able to do the new curriculum.
But, on the other hand, I've already taken a whole year off and I've been dying to start med school. And I'm not sure if anything I do to enhance my career in the potential year off would be looked at by residencies (since I'd still be pre-med). Any thoughts? I'm very torn!

I'm probably going to take the deferment. I'd been strongly considering doing the MD/MPH program anyway, and I spent some time talking to both departments this week. Apparently, I can do the MPH curriculum this fall and start the MD program fall 2012...It would take me the same amount of time, but by doing it in this slightly different order, I'll save 34k.

If anybody else is interested in MPH, I'd recommend talking to the people in the college of public health, they've been seriously helpful.

You can do research and get a first author would greatly help your residency app.

No, I didn't get it 'cause I turned in my request to defer literally the day before they sent out the email... now I'm trying to get that 34K back. >.<

Should've waited another day, lol.

Also, I don't know if this will help anyone in their decision-making, but I called admissions today and they said that about half the scholarship spots have been filled already.

Wow, nice thinking. Saving 34k when you were already planning on a dual-degree sounds like a sweet deal. Not time lost, but still money saved.

btw.. I logged into my status page last week and saw that the orientation materials (eg physical exam forms, HIPAA tutorials, etc) were posted there). I've logged in 2 or 3 times since and now they're gone.

Has anyone seen them or currently have them posted on their status page?

Just be patient, they are probably updating them for this year.

It's been amusing (and character illuminating) to see who is freaking out on the facebook page. They seemed to be under the delusion that OSU was going to force people to defer or even rescind admissions. It was pretty safe to assume none of that was going to happen and OSU was using this as a power move to secure good applicants for next year.

So I take it that anyone who is currently has "deferred" status should write off OSU as a rejection? If they are asking people to defer acceptance for a year, it seems highly unlikely that anyone will be taken off of the deferred list

Loved this school but WD today, just too expensive for me as an OOSer. Funny how private schools can be cheaper in the end, even assuming IS tuition after the first year.

Just withdrew my spot from the alternate list. OOS. :luck: everybody!

Does anyone know anything about Drayton Courts apartments in Grandview? It's on Chambers Rd. Was wondering what the area was like/any idea what those apartments are like. They sure look nice.

Are those good stops as in there is so little to do for the police that they have nothing better to do than to stop people for fun.. or are they bad stops (eg the neighborhood is so bad that everyone is quite likely a criminal)?

Yes, that question. Also, anyone know if that area/those apartments get too noisy?

Hey everyone.. this is obviously a throwaway account.

Do any current OSU med students want to comment on the drug test? Do they actually drug test before matriculation and the beginning of M3? Is it a urine/hair/blood based test?

Thanks for your response.

no not a bad neighborhood.. but these are definitely not good stops.. they are more or less menacing and nothing short of harassment. and they dont even have good reasons.. ie.. your vehicle matches the description of a stolen vehicle.. it appears you crossed center.. have you had any alcohol.. (when i clearly didnt) etc

Should've stopped smoking a couple of months ago hahaha

haha no, it's just urine test, and give you quite a while to do it (so it's out of your system), though I don't recommend doing whatever it is you are doing in medical school

Thanks for your response, I really appreciate it. I guess I should go back to drinking and getting used to being hungover... Haha

Hey future classmates - I've been a little out of the loop, so sorry if this is a dumb question. It says on the admissions page that we should be able to access orientation documents on our status page starting in early May, but I don't seem to have those available (or I'm being a dope and don't know where to find them). Can anyone help? Thanks!

I actually called the Admissions Office last week and asked them about this. They said they weren't going to meet to discuss the academic calendar until the 17th, and then they'd put the information online shortly after that. I haven't seen it either, so I assume they're still in the process of compiling information. They're really nice about giving the information over the phone, however! I had the health forms sent to me already and they said if I called back I could get the calendar, too.

Did anyone hear any further on this? I haven't seen anything.

I called a couple days ago to check when the white coat ceremony would be held. It's held in the afternoon of the first day of orientation week. So, it will be the afternoon of August 8th (so, class will start the 15th!). I was also told that we should expect all the orientation info to be released sometime at the end of this week. Hope that helps!

Yep! Thanks!

Can any M2's (or higher) shed some light on what orientation week is like?

Well, I hope everyone is getting just as excited as I am!

So, I called last week and was told that orientation materials would be released by the end of this week (which has now come and gone). Everything on the admission's website states that orientation materials are released during early May (it's now early June). I guess I am just a little overeager to hear from the school since the last communication I received was offering 50 people scholarships to defer.

Do you think they are trying to wait and see if more people are going to withdraw and take waitlist offers before sending materials out? (maybe because the class is still overbooked) Or, perhaps, are they just behind this year due to the extended interviewing window?

Another question:

I'm an incoming M1 and I was thinking about running the Columbus Marathon in October. Does anybody have any experience with training/know students who did this? Is it feasible given the amount of time you spend in class and studying. I think that anatomy lasts for 12 weeks, but I believe there are only three exams (maybe I'm wrong?), so it seems like there may be weeks that are lighter than others.

I'm a pretty experienced runner and I just ran the half-marathon yesterday, but I've never done the full marathon before and I'm not sure how much of a step up it is in terms of training intensity. Thanks

Wow, this is pretty crazy but I was just on the Columbus marathon website! I've never run a race, but I've been running for quite awhile and I too am very interested in running the marathon. I looked at the training guide on the website and the runs during the week are never longer than 6 miles (seems very manageable). It's only the Saturday runs that are long.

The way it looks to me, it seems completely doable (but perhaps we should wait for a student to chime in). If I remember correctly, one of the students mentioned that they did the half last year.

Yep did this last year, it was the sunday after anatomy 2 exam (hardest one of anatomy I think), and lets just say that my training went down the drain 2 weeks before that, by that I mean I just didn't do anything. I had not adjusted to the studying yet. I finished it, but no where near the time I wanted and I think I finished it on sheer will bc after that anatomy exam my brain was fried. But now I am prepared and I will be running again this october, can't say I knew too many who ran it last year in my class but there definitely was some (I know like 10). A lot of students volunteer there as med ppl though. But definitly doable!!! And I am by no means a runner, and I highly recommend it, it's fun!! Just make sure you plan out your training and studying better in those last few weeks. Good luck! excited for you M1s to come in august!

Edit: Sorry didn't read you were doing the full, I only did the half, but I imagine full to be similar bc you have to be in pretty good shape to do that, might just take an hour longer for the long runs every week.

PS nice name!

Ha sorry guess I'm less creative than I thought. Thanks for the replies, it seems like it's doable then. Hopefully I still feel like that in October.

i preface this statement by saying that i know this is a long way off, but i am trying to plan ahead for some weekends i will be away from school this upcoming year

could any m2's comment on when exams are usually done on the Fridays that we have them in the IP progam.

i would assume that most exams are on fridays, in the mornings? just wanted to see what time the exams were usually finished on fridays.

again, i know this is way in advance, but if any m2's could chime in, that would be great!

10:30 to 11am at the latest

in the middle of the year I think during cell block everything was like Monday or Tuesday, otherwise the rest are Friday.

For you runners, that's really cool! I enjoy a short jog with the puppy, but kudos to you guys that can pull off a marathon. I'm just an incoming student, but my assumption is that, given you figure out a good way to manage your time, it'll provide a nice balance to all the anatomy work we're going to be doing. Especially if running is a relaxing/ release thing for you.
Here's my weird question... I'm engaged and since I've gotta stay in Columbus the summer after year one to establish residency, when the heck am I going to get married? Do you guys know anyone else who's done this? I should add that I'm the girl, so I have to account for the actual planning that comes with it.

Well you are allowed to leave for at least part of the summer. They give us the option of spending 3 weeks outside of Columbus throughout the summer... now whether that means 3 weeks at once, or 3 weeks at a time, or 3 weeks combined throughout the summer - they were intentionally vague about it. The people in charge want you to get in-state tuition, so they do everything they can for you. You'll get a chance to speak to these people directly during orientation week, so you can ask specific questions. But it shouldn't be a huge problem at all to get married between 1st and 2nd years.

the best time to get married during med school!

Does anyone know when school officially starts? I know orientation starts on the 8th of August but how about actual classes? When registering for classes, the classes all begin around Sept. 21. Would any 2nd year med students like to weigh in?

The Monday after orientation. The registration stuff is on undergrad timeline which start in September. The month without them is quite nice actually!

Hey guys, I was having a little difficulty accessing the HIPAA training from the website posted on the orientation materials. I clicked the "CBL Login/Class Registration" button on the side but wasn't able to use my AMCAS ID and name to login. Am I missing something? I couldn't find the "CBL/Class Login" button that they instruct us to push...

Yeah, same here. I was going to call them, but I am out of the country and time schedule doesn't quite match. If anyone has an answer please post here!

Same problem here.

Well, at least I'm in good company! 🙂

I will call and ask on Monday and ask them about it.

Happened to me last year, somehow people are not on the "list" of being able to access it, yes call them and they will add you.
