so it has been over 10 weeks since my interview now and I still haven't heard anything. Do you guys recommend I call? Or just continue to be patient?

First, have you checked the online portal? I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but if you get put on "hold" then I think checking the portal is the only way you'll find out.

If you check the portal and there's no update: I don't think it would hurt to call, but I also don't think it's going to help that much. I'm pretty sure the office staff will only tell you something like "Yes we are still processing your interview outcome." This might be reassuring (you'll know that they didn't lose your whole application), but effectively it will just be a recommendation to stay patient.

Ultimately, I think that if you call you should plan to call only once. Any more is just feeding your own nervousness. Even calling once is for the neurotic* types.

*I called once.

:luck:

Thanks. Yeah, I keep checking my portal OBSESSIVELY, but still no change. No hold either. I might call after this weekend just to see if they lost my app. All I really want is that reassurance really.

And I have only become more neurotic since my 10 weeks came up 🙂

I posted about this on pg 23 I think. But ohsu is really really really slow. They have not lost your app, they just haven't reviewed it yet. I applied last year and it took them 12 wks to update my portal to a hold. The hold pool was dealt with on the 12th of May. Calling them doesn't help. Trust me. I went through that last year.

I don't know if it's too early for to answer this question, but has anyone that's accepted received information regarding financial aid? I'm an Oregon resident and I read that OHSU is raising tuition, but they had received a donation and now had a 14mil endowment to start giving scholarships.

Here's the article:
http://www.oregonlive.com/health/index.ssf/2010/06/ohsu_facing_state_funding_cut.html

I wondering if anyone is seeing any of that scholarship money?

From what was said at our interview day, unfortunately, I don't think that incoming students really receive much/any scholarship money. The students mentioned that most scholarship money is given to MS2s - MS4s. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but I wouldn't get my hopes up....

Nope

There was a $10 mill gift given for scholarships last year and I know that they will be doing interviews, including incoming MS1s. I don't know what the criteria are, but I suspect that they are only for Oregon residents (as the article says: "The scholarship fund was designed to provide financial support to 'high-impact' medical students those with the greatest potential for contributing to Oregon’s future as health care providers, mentors and community leaders.")

How do you know they'll be doing interviews? Do you know where to apply?

Put on hold a little while back; this school’s adcom definitely does its own thing. In-state, stats very comfortably above OHSU’s averages, URM from an ethnic group that produced exactly zero Oregon residents who matriculated to med school last year. That info + writing style is I’m sure enough to ID me, whatever. I’m not interested in hanging out on a waitlist all summer.

Had a 100% interview to acceptances conversion rate before OHSU, including multiple top 20’s, one of which offered a full merit scholarship. One weird thing about my interviews at OHSU: both my interviewers were very keen on finding out exactly where else I was interviewing and considering. Both then proceeded to--I wouldn’t go so far as to say badmouth--but question some of the more research/specialty-oriented schools’ commitment to primary care/family med, the implication was almost that an interest in a place like OHSU and a place like Hopkins ought to be mutually exclusive (for what it's worth, all of my clinical/shadowing experience is in family and community medicine). It’s not like they went badly, though, my 2nd interviewer straight-up said, “It’s clear you interview as well as you present on paper, so lets make the rest of this about you asking me about OHSU and finding out whether it's a good fit”. I guess they could tell that it wasn't.

My application certainly isn’t perfect, it's eminently rejectable in some ways, so I hope this isn’t coming off like some kind of sour grapes thing. This actually makes my life a lot easier, as I no longer have good Portland restaurants, forest park, proximity to snowboarding, etc. tugging at me as a reason to pay a whole lot more money to stay here. I mean this more as an FYI, one more anecdote to help people understand OHSU’s weird process. I figured I ought to make at least one contribution to this thread, which is about the sanest one on this site, I think.

Thanks for the additional link. I'd sure like to hear from anyone who receives an interview or the scholarship. I'm wondering if it's renewable every year. It sounds like it's up to 50% of in-state tuition. That's a great opportunity for Oregon Residents, since there has been exactly nothing available in the past.

I'm sure you're a stellar applicant and that you'll have a bright future ahead at one the top 20 schools to which you have been accepted. You might very well get accepted later on this year at OHSU. But with a merit scholarship already in the bag I think you don't need to sound so bitter. Many people just wish for one single acceptance this time of year.

I agree that it's no fun to hear successful applicants chortling over their acceptances when you're hoping for a single offer, but I don't think (Hal? Orin? 😉) Incandenza sounds bitter--it's genuinely useful to know some vaguely objective stats when reading about someone else's application experience. It's not like he/she was berating the AdCom folks or demanding an explanation--the process can simply be perplexing and frustrating. If only the most hard-done-by had a right to post complaints, the pre-Allo forum would contain nothing but salary questions and I'd miss a lot of entertaining trolls.

Incandenza, congrats on your other acceptances, and good luck.

Full Merit scholarship is trump card. Don't blame you for not staying in-state. Congrats

Full Merit scholarship is trump card. 😀

I don't care if you like my merit or think I'm in need. I don't care if you want to give me a scholarship for the way I dress, my socioeconomic background, or for kissing your tail.

I think I merit a scholarship, and I think I need a scholarship, so I don't care why you want to give me some money, just give it to me!

Edit for clarification: Lest anyone misunderstand my meaning, let me just say that I don't have a scholarship offer to OHSU or any other school, I was merely putting it out there that any scholarship should be considered a golden ticket. 🙂

Trust me, I'm grateful for whatever I've gotten, feel entitled to absolutely nothing, and feel for everyone still waiting. It's incredibly impressive that a lot of the people still in limbo are as gracious and congratulatory as they are.

I'm not fishing for compliments or assurances that my application is good. Maybe I should have written that post in 3rd person, to take some of the edge off. Like, this is the situation of my friend Johnny Pre-med, maybe you'll find it interesting/illuminating/reassuring/scary/whatever. If somebody would have told me that story about Johnny Pre-med back in August, my reaction would have been, "hmmm, that's interesting and somewhat surprising."

Interviewed yesterday, finally, and I'm not feeling great about it. I think I may have been spoiled by the enthusiasm of the people who interviewed me in Illinois but the doctors at OHSU just seemed disinterested. Oh well, it's my own fault for letting it throw off my game. Maybe they saw past my mumbled answers to the meaning beneath? 🙄

Don't worry man I had the same feeling in some places I've interviewed, and it only gets worse with time. But in those programs that I seriously thought I had no hope in, they ended up sending an acceptance letter. Relax and :luck:!

Thanks and I'm hoping I just turned it into this nightmare in my head and it actually wasn't bad. I only have the one other interview to compare it to so I don't have a great idea of how it should have felt.

So about that whole 20% Academics and 80% committee score they use to determine admittance. Is part of that 80% your application and essays or is it entirely determined by the interviewer score? I feel like I've missed some point whenever this is explained. Anybody know?

From what I understand, most of the subjective stuff, like the essays, LORs and interviews, are part of that 80%

Can anyone here chip in on how they feel about OHSU's match list? I want to be able to ignore it but it has been bugging me, especially this years' (2011). For example no one matched in Neurology, Neurological Surgery, or Orthopedic Surgery. There are some general surgery matches- but at semi unknown places far away or at OHSU only. Don't mean to be a downer- just interested in specializing and trying to make sure it's possible at OHSU!

Interviewed MD/MPH and was waitlisted a couple days ago. MAN!🙁

Is the waitlist ranked here? If so, do we get to find out our place on the waitlist? Or does anyone know if the waitlist is different from the MD/MPH applicants?

Thanks in advance and congrats to those accepted.

I too am quite underwhelmed with this year's match list. I'm the first to admit that I don't understand the intricacies behind the match list or how to interpret it correctly. OHSU prides itself on being a primary care-oriented field and it shows in the large number of people matching into family med and primary care IM. But even when you look past that, the ones that are going into specialties are mostly staying around here. Perhaps the fact that many students who attend OHSU have extensive family ties/are married here explains why many do not wish to move far away.

I've heard it mentioned before that OHSU does not prepare students very well for step I. Has this issue been addressed and how have things improved? I know step I performance depends a lot on individual efforts but looking at the match list makes me question the ability of OHSU students to match into more high-powered programs. I'm sure somebody will jump on me for bringing this whole issue of brand names and prestige into this discussion but isn't residency training differs from medical school in that better-known residency programs do select and produce better docs?

As far as I know there are only a few MPH spots in the class. If you weren't selected for the MPH you could still be considered for the MD program. And last year the people put on hold during the year find out their ranks on the list beginning on 5/12. Slightly more than 30 people eventually got accepted off the wait list. :luck: to you!

If I remember correctly, this is only partly true. You are right that there are only a few MPH spots in the class (I believe it's 5 spots). But if you are not selected for the MPH you are not necessarily still considered for the MD. For example, I am an OOS applicant who only fits the 'MD/MPH' mission group. My GPA is just below the cut off to fit the 'OOS with high stats' mission group. Because of this, if I am rejected from the MD/MPH, I have no chance of going to OHSU as a regular MD applicant. This is what I was told during my MD/MPH interview. The MD/MPH waitlist and MD waitlist are entirely separate I believe.

Oops! Sorry for the misinformation above. You would definitely know more about this having interviewed for the MD/MPH.

Honestly, it is hard to interpret a match list. For what it's worth, I have never heard anyone in the class of 2011 mention a desire to go into neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery (even back when they were second years, pre-Step 1), so the lack of interest may have a great deal to do with the lack of matches in those areas.

Aside from that, yes, many OHSU students are primary care driven. Many are older from the start and less likely to pursue long and painful residencies in some of the surgical specialties. Did some students do worse than they expected on Step 1? Almost definitely. Did that block the entire class from matching into competitive specialties? No.

If you want to go into something competitive, it is your job to get there. You can do it at any US school. Alternately, if you drop the ball, you can't blame your school for that.

Interviewed MD/MPH and was waitlisted a couple days ago. MAN!🙁

Is the waitlist ranked here? If so, do we get to find out our place on the waitlist? Or does anyone know if the waitlist is different from the MD/MPH applicants?

If MD/MPH works anything like MD/PhD, you could be waitlisted for two reasons: 1) the MD program didn't accept you, or 2) the dual degree program didn't accept you.

If it is the former, you will end up on a waitlist with the rest of the MD-hopefuls. If you get off of the waitlist, and there is still and MD/MPH spot for you, you will get into the combined program. In this case, you will not be given a waitlist number because it would be "misleading" (e.g. getting off of the waitlist may or may not leave you a spot in the combined program. If 5 other MD/MPH waitlistees are in front of you on the list, all MD/MPH spots will be full even if you make it off of the MD waitlist.)

If the combined program waitlisted you, on the other hand, you will hear from them once they have made all of their offers, and received answers. You probably won't hear much before then, and you have no guarantee of ending up on the MD waitlist.

I've heard it mentioned before that OHSU does not prepare students very well for step I. Has this issue been addressed and how have things improved?

In my opinion, OHSU has made a real effort to improve Step 1 prep in the last couple of years. They have review sessions taught by high-scoring MS3 and MS4 students. They have review videos available online, and they have even brought in guest lecturers in the past. In addition, MS1 exam questions have been reworked to more closely parallel Step 1 questions.

People still complain that MS2 classes only end one month before students have to take Step 1, but I would argue that if it takes you more than one month to full-time study, you aren't being efficient.

The only valid complaints (in my opinion) is that OHSU covers pharmacology very poorly and that most of the basic science knowledge is covered early in MS1 and never re-visited. OHSU students, predictably, tend to score lowest on biochem and pharm questions on the boards.

.

I interviewed some time in January. It took approximately 12 weeks for them to get back to me. Best of luck to the both of us. I hope I get in the MD/MPH program here. Maybe we will be classmates :xf:

For current students or those with knowledge of the financial aid process, what is the typical loan package an incoming M1 can expect to get? Tuition and fees alone for 2010 was estimated at $40,684. Factoring in living expenses, I'm thinking $55000/year or so. Am I anywhere near the typical number? And does the school let us know before May15?

There is an info sheet on that in your packet. Tuition is 42K this year, there are about 7,000 dollars in mysterious "fees" to go on top of that, bringing price up to 49K. They factor in 11,000 a year for rent and personal expenses (which in my case is ridiculously low, mostly because I eat food and pay rent), so a typical package would theoretically be 60K. I think it would more realistically be around 65K just because I don't know many people who can live on less than 1000 dollars a month..

Then again I am not a current student.

From what I understand, most of the subjective stuff, like the essays, LORs and interviews, are part of that 80%

That'd be awesome. I know the interview is still very important but I'm hoping you're right.

I spoke with financial aid this morning trying to gauge how much loan money i'll have to take out. I didn't write things down so I don't remember the exact numbers (sorry I probably should've) but the total loan package for tuition&fees+living expenses for Oregon residents will be more than $59,000. Matriculated students will also have the chance to apply for OHSU scholarships based on both need and merit amounting to $5000/year.

For all the people who interviewed with me the first week of February, it's been eight weeks (as I'm sure you're all intensely aware) and I was just thinking how much I've done in that time, yet I'm still stuck on waiting regardless:
-check the portal from my phone while I'm working
-went to Paris, thrilled to find my hotel had wifi to check my apps
-bought an iPad, immediately went to see the portal

Now I'm scheduling a break in Yosemite, just so I can go somewhere with (almost) no Internet access.

Yes good luck! Hopefully the MD/MPH program has a thing for cali biochemists! I am also from cali and majored in biochem 🙂

On the money note, keep in mind that they're not paying for you to go to school for the 2 1/2 months you have off for summer, so don't divide the total by 12 months. It would be nice, though... I would personally love a paid vacation.

The amount I get back after tuition and fees are paid for is $18,436. I definitely don't pay the $3,000 they allow on books, so I just roll it all together. Over 9 months, that is a budget of $2,000 a month.

Even if you stick to the provided number of only $11,460 for room and board, you should consider the cost of living here. I have an apartment in a great location for $750 a month, or $6,750 for 9 months. Some pay more, some less - it's probably pretty average. Anyway, that leaves $4,710 for whatever else, or $523 a month. I can't eat out every night, but I don't have time to anyway.

I'm sure all the schools consider cost of living based on the area, and I don't really see an issue with anyone not getting the loan money they need to live off of. I mean, don't try to buy a condo, but I think the financial aid packages between schools are all going to be compatible with living in the area.

Hi, everyone.

Congratulations to those of you accepted - and patience to those of you still on the wait list (or yet awaiting word). Indeed, OHSU's admissions process tends to run slower than many other schools. Keep faith.

For those of you now making plans in Portland and researching housing options, I invite you to explore the OHSU Student Cooperative as an option. We are ~21 students (primarily MD, but also a handful of RN/PhD/PT/etc) who live one block from the hospital in a former fraternity house. We enjoy the convenience of living close to campus (5 min walk to class/wards), the frugality of shared resources, and the residential community of fellow scholars. We are a diverse and quirky bunch - with 9 chickens in the backyard...

You can learn more about us at www.ohsucoop.com. We'll be reviewing applications for new members over the next couple months.

Go Blazers.

I invite you to explore the OHSU Student Cooperative as an option.

Having lived next to these folks for 4.5 years, I can honestly say that they have historically been fairly mellow and not what you might expect from the frat-style housing arrangement.

My only complaint is that they have a sign posted on their building (barely visible here if you know exactly where to look) that suggests that the parking in front of their building is for Phi Beta Pi tenants only. I asked a parking enforcement officer about it, and he said that it was their right to post the sign, but that the parking was legally city parking for anyone who comes along. Posting that sign seems to me like a shady, dishonest thing to do, and not something suiting future physicians 🙂() but anyway, the house seems like a decent place to live. 🙂

Hey Shazzbot I was just thinking about this earlier. I interviewed the same week as you and in since then I have also checked my portal endlessly...UGH. To make it worse, since I also only applied to OHSU (long story) I am also retaking my MCAT since I want to be prepared to to re-apply.

I like to think of it this way since I love everything that is ironic:

- I will destroy my MCAT doubling my last score (60+)
- get an amazing letter from my new job
- make the perfect AAMCAS application
- pay to apply 20+ schools this time
- Receive an OHSU acceptance email June 2nd.

Remember though that with OHSU, it's not really a rolling admissions so applying late isn't necessarily bad (unless you're applying to other schools next app cycle). When I was on the waitlist for OHSU last year and didn't get in, I submitted my application on August 20th and was eventually accepted Feb 3rd.

Hey Chuck I totally understand what your saying about applying late to OHSU isn't really a disadvantage. But the the waiting period has just killed me lately, and if I have to re-apply I just want to make sure I get in somewhere so applying early is a must for me especially since I'll be out of state for every other school outside of OHSU.

I'm on hold and my message says not to send updates, but will OHSU accept a letter of intent? I would 100% attend if accepted and want to let them know, but don't want to send an unwanted letter. any advice or previous experience? thanks.

So I applied last year - the waitlist is ranked and the ranking does not change to the best of my knowledge regardless of update letters or letters of intent. (I talked to the Dean of Admissions about the waitlist during my exit interview)
If it had made a difference I would've written them one a week!
Hold pool basically means they are waiting to finish interviewing others to rank everyone based of the numerical score they have (20% gpa/mcat 80% interview, letters, essays, extracurriculars). So you already have a score at this point - it wasn't high or low enough to be immediately accepted or rejected based off their statistics from past years. (Top/bottom 10-15% numerical scores)

Hah I too would write them one a week. Maybe more...

Has anyone been keeping a running tally of how many people have been accepted so far? I know SDN isn't necessarily indicative of the whole applicant pool but I'd be interested to know since I interviewed so late in the season. I know OHSU mostly waits until the end but I swear I've seen more than 15% of acceptances on here alone.

I've seen more than 15% of acceptances on here alone.

As of today there are 19 members on the OHSU 2015 class facebook page. By requesting to join the group they have effectively signified that they were given an offer of admission, and 19 people is slightly more than 15% of the total final class...

Even if everyone who's a member was granted acceptance, that's already more than 15% of possible acceptances prior to the mid-May date.

However, a couple of these members have expressed mixed feelings, so from this sample there's still a lot of room for movement.

---

As someone already pointed out, according to the traffic rules OHSU should have already given out as many offers as they expect to have final seats. I've gotten mixed messages about OHSU's policies, so I don't know if they adhere to this rule or not, so I'm not complaining or anything, just making an observation!

Placed on Hold -- don't know what that means in the scheme of things since I interviewed (February) for MD/PhD... Hold for MD admittance? Hold for MD/PhD? Regardless, past postings make it sound like a spot for the combined program is unlikely for the rest of the season. Btw, URHere -- your postings have been extremely helpful and informative.

Thought I would just post in case there are other applicants (like myself) who are searching for any clues as to what to expect and when.

On a brighter note, OHSU is definitely a wonderful place -- absolutely loved it when I visited!

When in february did you interview abrokenhart. I interviewed the third week and I was just curious to see if it took you the full 8 weeks to hear back.
