I'm headed out to visit the DC area in April, does anyone know if I would be able to get on campus then?

You can call the admissions office and ask for your name (and any others traveling with you) to be put on the list for the gate guard. You'll need to know which day you want to visit the school.
I don't know how often my particular experience with this happens, but something to be aware of... I called them a few times requesting my name to be placed on the list, including a call the day before my visit - they assured me it would be done each time. When I got to the front gate, I produced by driver's license and said I should be on the list. He looked, said I wasn't, then asked why I wanted to get on base. I said I had been accepted to USUHS and would be going in the Fall (in reality I hadn't decided on a school yet, but I figured that sounded better). He said congratulations and proceeded to give me directions to the school.

Does anyone know when the second look is this year? I couldn't find it on the USUHS webpage. I noticed in previous years it was in April. Just wondering if anyone had any specifics on it. thanks

At the interviews last week they told us that the second look weekend would be held April 1-2. They said they would be emailing out the information to everyone and sending postcards as well.

I interviewed on 11/18 and got a phone call a few days ago asking for my mailing address... do yall think I should be expecting something unpleasant in my mailbox?

What was your service preference?

Army, which isn't necessarily full yet, but the whole address request thing was a buzz kill.

I bet. I can't believe they didn't just tell you over the phone. 🙁 Well hopefully its still good news.

I had a similar thing happen. However, when they called I asked them what sort of news they would be sending me. They basically told me that a decision had not been made. I thought I was being put on hold, but then about 3-4 weeks later I received a letter in the mail dated 13 January 2011 telling me that I was on the waiting list. So I wouldn't worry too much about the phone call, it doesn't necessarily insinuate bad news.

What is the consensus on when USUHS will be contacting 12/2 and 12/9 interviewees? Do they normally notify based on group of interview dates or each date individually? I am hoping for sometime this week...

I was thinking around the 1st? Who knows though. Do we even know if they are through the 11/18 people?

At the interview they said not to expect any word until February, but I was hoping that was worst case scenario. From what is posted on here, it looks like they notified the 11/18 folks. I was just assuming they would do the 12/2 and 12/9 notifications together and this week given the 2 week intervals from before.

Unfortunately I don’t think we will hear anything (Dec 2nd/9th) until the following week…

Why did I think it was usually the first and 15th? I don't know but the waiting is starting to kill me... I mean I knew it would be February but I am going to be out of the country from the 1st to 13th so I wont have access to my mail either...sigh

Hey everybody. I never considered applying to this school until just recently and I was hoping to get an opinion from you guys. I've always felt that I "missed-out" never going to the military so I could get higher education and for some reason it just now clicked that I can actually do both.

What does this school have to offer?

How long is the required service after graduation?

How well does this school actually train its physicians (for both military/civilian careers)?

Seeing that this is a military college, is it easier to gain acceptance or more difficult?
(I am 3.9 GPA X2, 34Q, some leadership, tons of clinical and volunteering)

What determines the branch you get placed in?

any other information you would like to share would be appreciated. Thanks

So I'll be heading down to Rock Bottom soon, I wonder how I'll find the right people...

There were 5 of us (in civilian clothes) seated in the balcony overlooking the restaurant. I asked the greeter to send anyone asking about USUHS our way. Sorry if we missed you. 😕

The weather will be bad tonight, but there should at least be a few of us, probably up in the balcony again, and definitely in civilian clothes, 6-7 pm. I'll have be leave by 7 for sure. Feel free to drop by if you're in the area and interviewing tomorrow!

$5 pizza/appetizers! 👍

Got my rejection letter about 2 weeks ago. Disappointed, but what can you do at this point. I'm green lit for HPSP. Now just waiting on an acceptance letter from a civilian school.

For those who have been accepted, I'll see you in a few years down the road. For those still waiting, GOOD LUCK! I visited in March and loved it.

Dang, sorry I missed you guys. I walked over there right by you guys just as they were bringing your food over, but I had no idea who I was looking for (didn't see Hugh Laurie anywhere). The girl at the front that I asked didn't know, so I eventually sat down and enjoyed a pizza, which was quite good BTW. Well, I had a good time at the interviews and hopefully I can join you in meeting new applicants next year as an MSI :xf:.

Received my unconditinally acceptance today!! Yay! Glad to have that out of the way, man that process took a long time. Received my conditional acceptance October 16th start waiver process immediately afterwards. See you guys this coming August! Oh, and see you Army folks in June!

Congrats Armywife

I doubt anyone will show for Rock Bottom tonight due to weather. It's a sloppy mess out here.

General question: for those that are completely set on USUHS (or current students), what are some of the big reasons to go to USUHS over a good civilian school with HPSP (besides the difference in pay and benefits)? Seems like a pretty supportive forum, and I'm kinda struggling to make a decision. Thanks for any input!

Well I think pros and cons are personal based on your preferences, but I can speak for me:
- I am committed to being career Army Doc, so knowing that the 7 vs 4 yr payback doesn't mean much and therefore the difference in pay and benefits is important
- Also mentioned at the interviews is that USUHS has a bit of an edge over HPSP when it comes to military match in residencies (you will have more exposure to the programs and have an opportunity to make an impression on PD more so than HPSP)
- One of my mentors is an career Army Doc and he put it to me like this when I posed the same question to him: If you want to be a career Army (insert branch) Doc go to USUHS, if you are unsure or want to just put in your minimum time (you are still a great American) do HPSP.
- Also, I know its apples to oranges, but I look at the Academies vs ROTC. Will you be a better officer by going to an Academy vs going to a normal college and doing ROTC? No, not necessarily. But, by going to an Academy will you be better prepared for a career in the military when you begin? In my opinion, more often than not. So applying the same logic to USUHS vs HPSP, will you be better prepared to be a "military" doctor, I think so.

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for the response. Haha, I'm actually an ROTC grad from a while back...

I would STRONGLY urge you to consider going with HPSP, however I don't have a good reason other than I'm hoping for as many vacancies at USUHS as possible, so take my advice for what it's worth. 😉

Haha I was thinking the same thing... Not that I have even been waitlisted yet. Ahh the waiting is anxiety inducing. As well as trying to get physically cleared...

I don't know enough about USUHS to give any advice other than I loved it when I interviewed. That being said I have friends who have done HPSP and loved it too. So best of luck making your decision. 🙂

Haha, I like y'alls responses. Though I'm Navy so don't think that would help you out too much longhaul...

Interview 11/18
I just received an "Alternate Selection" Letter in the mail. Anyone else get one of these/know what the means as far as selection chances/know of anyone that has been accepted off the alternate list?

Received an unconditional acceptance today for the Navy after having my medical waiver passed in December; postmarked the 24th for anyone still waiting for their letter to come in.

Anyone out there willing and able to briefly explain the medical waiver process? Does the applicant have to file any further paperwork or does the school take care of that based on your eye exam/physical results and determine if a waiver is feasible on your behalf?

After your initial physical (which is conducted by Concord Medical), results are sent to the DodMERB for review. The reviewing physician determines if you are medically qualified, need remedials/waivers or are medically disqualified (i.e. you have medical conditions for which no waivers can be granted).

If remedials or a waiver is required, Concord Medical will send you a letter on what needs to be done, in addition to a follow up letter from the DoDMERB. There are two options:

- You can go to the lab/physician that Concord Medical has designated so you don't have to pay out of pocket, or

- You can go to your physician and get the remedials/waiver request done there, and have your doc send the results directly to the DoDMERB. You will be responsible for all costs, however.

The remedials/waivers request will again be evaluated by the DoDMERB physician and a final go/no go decision is made.

There is a more thorough explanation on the DoDMERB website:
https://dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil/

Hope that helps!

Once your medically disqualified you just email Rebecca Patterson saying that you'd like to start the waiver process, after that you just need to do whatever she asks you to do. It might not be a bad idea to have your primary care physician or specialist for whatever your disqualification is to write a letter saying your disqualifying condition will not limit your ability to be a military physician.

Has anyone's remedials been administrative? How did that work for you?

I had two remedials, one where I had to go to an appointment and one where they requested all of my medical records. I just found all of the medical records I could find, scanned them in and emailed them to Larry Mullen and mailed them to DoDMERB. It didn't take too long, I think it was 3 or 4 days until my account thing reflected that they had received them.

Thanks for the response. I had a remedial that was an apt and then when they reviewed that they hit me with two more administrative remedials. That doesn't sound too bad though. I am a little bit worried about finding all the records though. Who is Larry Mullen?

Don't worry about finding every single record including the one time you stubbed your toe on vacation etc. Just make sure you have as much as you can related to what they're actually looking at and anything else that you can obtain easily (anything that takes less than a month to get a hold of).

Larry Mullen is the Deputy Director of DoDMERB and probably the only reason disgruntled service academy applicants haven't burnt it down. If it seems like anything is taking a bit too long or you have questions just email him and it will be taken care of quickly. [email protected]

Awesome thank you so much. I was really stressing out about how complete the medical records needed to be. I have most of the condition related stuff already. Or my doctor does and I can get it from her. 🙂

I got one last year and didn't do anything but finish my medical process and I didn't get in then. If you go to somewhere around page 3 of this thread and find an ms1 who posted (I think the handle is robokittie or something like that) who go bumped from the alternate list to wait list and was pulled in from the wait list. If you don't do anything but get medically qualified, than your chances are probably very low (theyd have to exhaust the wait list). If you keep them updated and maybe send a letter of intent or interest that would probably help.

So, is everyone from Dec 2nd and 9th interviews anticipating hearing next week? If so, this may be the first time I have ever looked forward to a weekend being over. I hope everyone gets good news.

I know I am hoping to hear and I hope we all get good news too! If its a letter (which is probably will be) sadly I will be out of the country for a couple of weeks so I will just know that its sitting there and have no way of finding out what it says. Eek.

might want to change your outgoing voivemail..."youve reached docbell I'll be away for a while, leave a message, if this is USUHS I accept your offer"

I interviewed Dec. 9th and am anxious as well. However once we're into Feb. I'm thinking it will be worse as I'll REALLY be expecting to hear something every day.

Haha for my phone I'll just face the international charges. It would be totally worth it 🙂 (I hope if they call me asking for my address I would be kind of sad).

Does anyone know if the waitlist (navy) moves any, if at all, before may 15? and also if they exahaust the waitlist (Since they have a wait and an alternate list I was assuming they must move through the waitlist exaustivley to neccesitate putting people on an alternate list throughtout the application season. Any info is welcome thanks alot!

It seems like the waitlist usually moves a little bit sporadically from now until mid-April, and then it has the greatest amount of activity from mid-April to mid-May. When I was talking with admissions on interview day, they said that several years they have completely exhausted both the waitlist and the alternate list. They even told me that they had one guy who they actually rejected, and then called toward the end of the summer and offered him a spot when they had no more alternates (he was at a military academy), so there's always some chance of hope.

For those of you curious about the timeline, I received a call from Dr Calloway for my conditional acceptance on 01/04 andmy unconditional letter was mailed out 01/26.

Good luck everyone!

Just to calm other peoples nerves, I interviewed 11/18 and still haven't heard anything (no letter, no email, no calls).

I think waiting is definitely the hardest part.

Anyone get news today? It's the 1st of the month 😕
