I work for a government research lab across the street from the naval medical center. We have been hearing people at the Naval Medical Center have been labeling essential and non-essential people to be left on campus during the possible government shutdown starting march 7th. My question is will USUHS still be operating during this time or will the admissions office and DODMERB be inactive during this time period? Any usuhs med students know?

What about the NFL lockout?
NBA lockout?

Hi everyone! Just got a waitlist letter today, so I thought I would just share my application time line

08/10/2010 - Secondary application complete
08/30/2010 - Interview invite
09/23/2010 - Interview
11/03/2010 - 1st Hold letter date stating final decision will be made by 01/15
01/13/2011 - 2nd Hold letter date stating prelim decision will be made by 01/04
01/17/2011 - Sent a new rec letter and letter of intent
02/18/2011 - Wait list letter dated, 02/25/2011 letter received in MD state

My 1st preference is Army, no previous military experience ( apart from spouse in the service), MCAT 29, grad school in the basic sciences sGPA 3.4, cGPA 3.4. Non-trad applicant, alot of clinical and non clinical experiences, have been working at least 2 jobs since undergrad, volunteering experiences etc. Not a URM and no publications.

I had a really good experience at the interview, really loved the school, enjoyed both of my interviewers and am really excited about hopefully going here in the Fall😍

It's been a really really long wait. And more waiting ahead 😳 But hopefully it will all be worth it! :luck:

only the admissions knows if those are good enough. they don't sound bad but why would you do a masters (MA or MS?) and not do research or try to publish? i'm a non-traditional as well with 7 years prior submarine service (i'm going for a navy spot), but that was an absolute requirement that i demanded from my dept when i started my MS: research and publications.

Yeah if we knew what stats would be good enough for schools we wouldn't be anxiously waiting I guess.... I did independent research and wrote a paper as a solo author. My advisers use the paper in conferences in the subject and pushed me to send to med journals to publish them but I didn't. It was my own fault so I have no one to blame but me for that. I'm sure it would have helped my chances but whats done is done

Ok I interviewed Feb 10th and was also bummed about the "waitlist only" status. Not unexpected though given the late interview date. Dr. Calloway said us February interviewees wouldn't hear anything til April. Seriously??!! The waiting and uncertainty is going to kill me.

keep up on that paper! it really helps with residency amongst many other things! it isn't too late at all.

Hey, so i just got the waitlist letter from USUHS. Its about time... I interviewed in September and they had me on hold for the longest time. Does anyone know if all the army spots are now full as well? Also, in the past how has the waitlist movement been for the army branch? I'm currently for the navy, but I may switch my preference

👍 Congratulations, joloeo! What a nerve-wracking wait! Well, I guess you have to wait some more, but at least you've been recommended! Sorry, but I can't myself remember which branch had the most movement, but I do think it is Army.

I just got the same letter today! I was also wondering how slots go. I was a little surprised that it didn't tell me that I'm in the "[Branch] waiting list". I guess they don't tell you that until you've gotten a conditional acceptance. I ordered my preference AF, Navy, Army, PHS.

3.42 University of Washington, Seattle, BS Neurobiology
31R then 33Q
ECs Hospital Volunteering, Student job for a while in school, working currently at federal laboratory, extensive church activity
non-prior

They will let you know if your on hold. In November I received a letter telling me I was placed on hold and that by January 15 I would receive an answer.... Come Jan 15 and I get another letter saying I was still on hold and would receive an answer no later than April 1st. Thankfully though, I finally have some sort of closure.

For reference, the last few years the most wait list spots have come up in this order: Army has the most spots open up, then AF (though AF and Navy seemed to have switched in the last few years and you never know when they could switch back), then Navy moves the least. PHS is a whole other thing entirely and I don't really know if that moves or how much.

If you want the best information on which wait list is moving the fastest, call the admissions office and they will usually tell you which service has spots if there are any and possibly which service has seen the most movement this year.

I've heard the chair force (AF) moves the least from MANY people on this blog and in past years, with Army and Navy having significant movement after May 15th. I guess it is year dependent, but nevertheless, have faith and rely on your back-up schools.

Tritown, are you from the Tri-cities? I went to UW as well, and interviewed in september. I got a conditional acceptance only about a week ago.

For everyone who is conditionally accepted and/or have been waiting to hear back from USUHS after completing their remedials, DoDMERB's system has been down for a few weeks and it has been causing some delays in communication between them and the school. I'd been waiting to hear so I asked the office and they gave me this information. Just thought I'd let anyone who is in the same boat know why it might be taking a while to hear back.

DoDMERB has been getting back to me quickly, though with the answers I do not want to hear. I was just medically disqualified, however, the reason I was disqualified is not true. I am going to call them tomorrow to dispute their claim, but most likely I will be applying for a waiver. :lame:

I received a letter back from DoDMERB 2 weeks after my last remedial appointment.

Hope everyone else is having better luck!

Ya I had heard directly from DoDMERB quickly too, but the delay in communication is between DoDMERB and USUHS (not that your post was directly in response to mine above). Good luck getting qualified or being granted a waiver!

Do you think that means that the waiver process will take longer? Or will that have any impact on it at all?

I imagine that it would since waiver processes are initiated by the schools requesting them.

Oki Doki, thanks! DoDMERB is going to review my file because the wording is wrong on my disqualification, but I am pretty sure I will still have to get a waiver.

I thought I was the only one who still said "okie dokie"...but I digress. 🙂

Edit: Had questions in regards to the AF USUHS Contact Package but will direct them to Mr. Kush.

Anyone else receive a package with a contract that must be completed by 10 March? If so does this legally bind you to attending USUHS or will you still be able to withdrawal pending information from other medical schools? Air Force applicant.

^have you seen the AF posts on the facebook group wall? there's a couple good links for AF stuff

EDIT- post directed at pinknoise

So, I've gathered from reading previous posts in the past that being on the waitlist for USUHS isn't such a bad thing - does the waitlist move quicker relative to other schools? Do they clear a significant portion of the waitlist? I'm not quite sure I understand the rationale. If anyone has any insight, please share. I got waitlisted (Army), but still unsure if I should hold my breath. I've been accepted to other schools and I'd like to have at least a little closure by this point. Thanks!

I have a question. I got an email save the date for the second look weekend. It said it was for all accepted and waitlisted students in the flier. The thing is I am still waiting to hear back from after my interview. Did everyone get this?

Well, I didn't get it. Which makes me sad since I haven't heard back from my interview yet either. I would think that you might be expecting a waitlist letter soon. I hope so, good luck!

DocBell,
I got my waitlist letter dated Feb. 18th and just got the save the date email as well. Worst case scenario I would imagine is you would be hanging out on the waitlist with me.

I really hope so. All of a sudden the suspense is killing me again. Because it has been so long since my interview and I hadn't heard I had myself all braced for a straight up rejection. It would be awesome to know there is still a chance.

so i got the army appointment packet and the second look email. The thing is I only have a conditional acceptance and am waiting on a medical waiver. Rebecca told me when Dodmerb knows i have been granted a waiver she will know. The Dodmerb system is down and I receive this packet. Does that mean internally in some computer my waiver has been granted so they sent me this packet??? 😕 it says in the email

"I cannot request orders until I have received the above documents, your physical has been approved and the Security Office stipulates that all documents have been completed to initiate your clearance."

Did anybody else get this with an unconditional?

Very odd circumstances indeed. I also am waiting for medical clearance. Anything anyone here can do is speculate further. I would contact anyone and everyone at USUSHs and DoDMERB until I get some sort of clarity. Good luck!

I got a second look invitation too, and I am currently on the waiting list.

Is the second look weekend still of good value even if you know you really want to go to USUHS? Or is this mostly for people who still haven't decided? I would love to go again, but if it's not really meant for me, anyway, it would be difficult to justify the airfare and sky-high hotel rates. Thanks for the help!

(Yes, skimsu, I am from Tri-Cities. It would be pretty cool to attend with another UW alum!)

I guess this is more a question for current students who went to their Second Look Weekend but...

Does anyone happen to know if you can bring a boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse along to the second look weekend? Also, is it ok to just go for one day (for example only go on Saturday if you can't get off work on Friday) or do they prefer you go for both?

Thanks to anyone that can provide some insight.

I was wondering the same thing. Not that I know I am going... I am not even sure if I was supposed to get the invitation. I emailed admissions asking my status. I don't want them to be annoyed at me but I am super confused.

I've heard that family is encouraged to come, but at a certain point (at the hospital tour) they can't come along, most likely due to the sheer number touring the facilities than anything. I plan on bringing a family member, and second look is a GOOD thing that isn't handed out randomly, that is for sure, so feel confident in that invitation.

Accepted Army...

I am relieved the wait is over and excited to be at USUHS this fall.

Congrats! I'm still waiting on Navy, two more interviews this month and second look weekend at USUHS first weekend in April. EVMS is my #1 right now since my wife just got orders to Norfolk, but I still have my interview and have to get accepted, so keeping fingers crossed for USUHS!

Surfernuke is correct, family is encouraged and they can do everything with you except the hospital tour.
I would encourage people to go even if you already know you want to go to USUHS - it'll give you a chance to meet people, check out apartments/houses, meet your sponsor, etc. If its the same as two years ago it was a fun weekend.
I don't know about the one day/both days thing, you'll have to ask them about that. The Saturday part was really short; just a morning thing, and all the good stuff was on Friday.

No, we're not in the NWU's (the blue cami uniform). I'm not sure why not; the school of nursing is and the hospital is, but we're still in the old style woodlands. Maybe they'll change that for you all; as far as I know we and the naval academy are the only two groups still in them. They don't let us wear the woodlands at NNMC, but if they let us wear the NWUs when we're on rotations next year I'll definitely buy them - so much more comfortable than khakis!

Great info! Thanks. Yeah, my reserve unit is changing over in 2 months, so I was a little bitter on having to buy them for 3 drill weekends before school starts. I don't understand the woodland thing, oh well.

on the second look weekend, why only 90 students invited? And if you are on the waitlist, should we consider it a good thing we were invited?

Well, I have decided to go to second look. See you guys there!

Does anybody know any details about the schedule for the two days? The email invited didn't really elaborate much.

Just got an invite to the second look weekend even though I'm still on the waitlist for Navy. Where did the number 90 invites come from? Were only 90 people invited or did only 90 people show up last year? I thought everyone with an acceptance or on a waitlist was invited?

I did a search on the web, and USUHS has only been doing this for a few years. The number 90 came from the first year it was done, in 2008 I think, not sure why only 90 people. It is organized by the office of assessions and recruitment, acting as a recruiting tool for those accepted or on the waitlist. I plan on going, coming straight from an interview in Albany the day before, but looking forward nonetheless.

BTW, I'm on the Indiana forum as well since i was accepted there. What a huge difference between USUHS and that forum! Everyone on there is trying to compare stats, whining about race cards being played for acceptances, it is pretty horrible, makes me really want USUHS all the more. It's nice to see that my potential future classmates are normal people with good dispositions and senses of humor....... except for anyone going Army, LOL! See everyone at second look weekend.

I wish I could attend the second look weekend, but its going to be too expensive for me to justify it. I bet it will be a lot of fun though.

So, they've only done 2nd look once - two years ago (April 2009; the year my class was applying). Then they didn't have the funds to do it last year. It may have only been 90 people because it was the first year; or possibly because we get a lot of people applying from all over the country and not all have the money to fly out here again.

From what I remember:
Friday: we sat in the dining hall and heard from various people/groups (dean of admissions, etc); Watched "Fighting for Life"; Went on a tour of the hospital with interns/residents/attendings that were USUHS graduates; Went bowling on base. I stayed with a host so I went out to dinner with her and a group of her friends that night - I encourage staying with a host if you get the opportunity.

Saturday: more sitting in the dining hall and hearing from people; it only went until noon or so (I flew out later that day)

I remember hearing from the student spouses club and we had a time where the different interest groups set up info on tables but I don't remember which days those two things were.

On behalf of us Army grunts, I would like to apologize if our low-brow humor is offensive to our more sophisticated sister branch, the Navy.

I want to attend the second look weekend but have a few conflicts that will prevent my attendance that weekend:
a. Colorado Rockies Opening Day on Friday 1 Apr (my conflict)
b. George Strait Concert (my wife's conflict)

I think we will just go out there another weekend and look at areas to live with good schools (our main concern with one starting kindergarten next year). He is already asking how long he will have to be in school, to manage his expectations I let him know that I am in his eyes an 'old man' and I am still in school...
