alienshards and hp, so are yall saying that yall do think they will make it through the upper tier?
No it is not normal to have that many- most years lose only 1-2. But like I said a lot were for different medical reasons or personal reasons, so don't be so quick to judge and say you would gladly have taken their place... life is complicated, and things happen when you least expect it... and no we did not lose 22- we have lost exactly 14 ppl-
like I said good luck! i know the waiting sucks, i was in the same boat last year

What did you major in?
I'm sure that is the worst case senario. Remember when UASOM determines the length of the waitlist, they have all that information locked down - not just our best guess. It is in their best interest (neccessity) to make sure that the list more than adequately meets THEIR worst case senario. Having said that, I'm sure they want to meet that goal with the shortist list possible - to minimize unnecessary heartbreak.
They know the number of OSS, which OSS and IS are holding dual acceptances, who sits on more desirable waitlists, perhaps even who will be recieving money that may tip the scales on a decision. There must be a fairly proven formula. Take that number and add a cushion of nossan + 10 others and you have the waitlist.
I would like to think that the later the waitlist is released, the more accurate the number is. I would be feeling pretty good, even in the middle tier.
I hesitate to make any judgment, but, assuming a wait list of ~100, even if Uab cut significantly back on oos state acceptances, I would be shocked if they didn't make it through most if not all the upper tier. That's worst case scenario.
do we know for sure that uab cut back on oos acceptances?
Looks like alienshards is taking the early lead for annoying class gunner 🙄
I would try to stress as little as possible at this point guys, it is still early. As somebody already said, it really seems like at least half of our class (MS1) got in off the waitlist.
Good luck DittoI'm pulling for you
Oh yes. Trouble is, you won't know who I am. I'm a secret gunner.
Anyways, we look to be on schedule. We'll know better in a week how things stand.
I'm lucky that I haven't gotten that reputation yet. Isn't tomorrow when scholarships are released, potentially spurring some wait list movement?
Hey guys, there is no reason to believe that UASOM is going to decrease the number of OOS acceptances. bamapremed what is your source?

Very true... As one of the 14 people that took a leave of absence from the class of 2014 I would much rather be studying for the GI module final than on a LOA but I did not have a choice just as the other 13 - I truly believe that none of us wanted to leave - we just had to do what was best for us at the time. And for what it is worth to everyone on the waitlist - according to the Fun 1 exam schedule and the ICM group list there were 179 people in our class at the beginning of Fun 1. So I am -cautiously- assuming that LOAs are not taking away any of the original 176 seats - but that is just from looking at the lists that we were given so take it for what it is worth - I make no guarantees. I hope that LOAs don't take away any of the 176 seats - I would hate to be the reason 1 person did not get in. Best of luck to everyone on the waitlist and see you in July!
I was a biomedical engineer. Great for Birmingham (with all the medical research), bad for Huntsville (primarily aerospace/mechanical/chemical engineering).
Thanks. I'll look up the day camp though. That might be a good way to go ahead and move down to Birmingham at the beginning of the summer.
Good luck DittoI'm pulling for you
C'mon Ditto!

I'm not sure if there are a lot of opportunities like this in Huntsville, but the pharmaceutical company I work for always hires temps during our peak manufacturing times (spring/summer) from Kelly Scientific. www.kellyscientific.com
You could also try Lab Corp www.labcorp.com if you want something more clinical.
I WAS JUST ACCEPTED!!!!!! The wait is over! I will be turning down my acceptance to South, so I hope that helps one of you guys out!! Good luck to everyone... You guys have been great! I'm looking forward to meeting my classmates in July.😀

Congrats!!! 👍 I'm glad to see some SDNer's being accepted!!
A friend of my just got in, she was upper 1/3
Assuming RTR is from Univ. Alabama...my friends is from UABWas it rtr10? Just to make sure we aren't double counting.
All that stuff probably factors into the numerical interview score. Once your score is set, I doubt it's changed.
Anyways, it's looking like it's better to be the friend of an SDNer than an SDNer.
Do you think the wait list could be bigger this year? Not that that would be too much of a problem (I see no reason why UAB would make the wait list bigger unless that had reason to suspect it would move more).
My understanding is the availability of clinical spots limits the class size.
Does anyone know if they pull from the waiting list based on gender/ISvsOOS/minority status or just the next in line
Looking at the facebook page UASOM Class of 2015...it looks girl heavy
I am not sure if that is just who has joined the page or what?
no, it's based on who has the next highest score...
also, none of your demographic stuff goes into your "score"

In retrospect, I think I misunderstood about the question a bit. I still say that demographics are included in your score (because unless the stats have changed a bunch in the past few years, the majority of the upper tier should be men). I'd have to defer to alien (he seems to be the resident statistics guru) about whether they could construct the list so that they could just go straight down it without skewing the class profile too badly.
It's definitely doable to get a distribution you want with a straight list that you follow. It's just a matter of making the average stats for each subgroup the same as the whole group. However, this requires a pretty blatant manipulation of attractiveness scores based solely on demographics, which doesn't seem likely.
What's more likely is that when the adcom is voting on a candidate (and thus giving them their interview score), there would a bit of unspoken pressure to give slightly higher scores to "desirable" demographics.
Now, this isn't as precise as a statistical method, but it also doesn't leave a paper trail that says "we favor people based on race/ sex"
So a candidate's numerical score is based off of GPA, MCAT, and interview, and as you can see, demographics officially play "no part" in the score. However, it would influence the interview section, and thus influence the candidate's numerical score.
At least, that's how I would do it, if I were in charge of an admissions department and was told I needed to ensure a diverse class without leaving a paper trail.
I think as far as the wait list goes, they only tell you what third you're on in order to preferentially assign alternates that fit the demographic profile of the student that withdrew.
I disagree, if they're trying stay with in demographics then they do so by predicting how far they will make it into the waitlist, and creating the list accordingly. At this point, I'm almost positive that all of our names are on a list and as one accepted person drops then the next person in order on the list is accepted.
Judging by last years thread, it appears that UAB sends out waitlist acceptances in bursts, primarily on Mondays and Fridays. I understand Mondays (they are not in the office over the weekend and must account for withdrawn acceptances come monday), but why do you think they delayduring the week? My theories are as follows:
1. They look at the third of the waitlist they are currently in and accept a student with a similar demographic and scholastic profile as the student that withdrew.
2. They make some attempt to conserve campus assignment preferences.
I am ready to start hearing some good news today...Here is to all us...Cheers!
Amen to that. It's 39 degrees and snowing here in Chicago, and nothing would be better than getting a letter that tells me I never have to come back. Good luck to everyone this week. Last year, 5 SDNers came off the waitlist this week.
